I. Different endings

According to actor Micah Sloat at least 53 different endings were filmed. Most of them are just slightly different compared to each other, but some of them contain totally different content. Director Oren Peli mentioned, that there were three different main endings and the other ones were just a personal option, stuff he played with but ultimately did not turned out the way it was intended to be. Loose ideas were tested - or the three different main endings were just slightly variied. In an interview with Cinematical.com Oren Peli states:

„Well, I filmed a whole bunch, but most of them no one has ever seen, they were just for my own options. There was one ending that was shown at some festivals, and then another ending that was shown publicly only the one time. And then the current ending, which we've had for more than a year now. [...] The original ending... I'll just say very briefly, the movie ends with cops entering the house to find the scene of the crime. The other one...there's been some talks about it on the internet, but I'd like to keep quiet on it for now. Maybe one day we'll see them all on the special edition DVD.“

The last sentence about a future Special Edition could make the fans of the film very happy - because the current DVD and Blu-ray-edition unfortunately do not contain any extras or special features, except for the so-called Unrated Cut wich only differs by one single scene from the theatrical version. If and when a Special Edition containing all endings (and maybe even the festival version) will be released, is unknown.

I. a) Festival ending
After Katie has watched Micah up front at the bed for several hours, she slowly walks down the steps toward the kitchen. After a few seconds a loud screaming sounds which wakes up Micah. He runs down into the kitchen and screams as well. Suddenly utter silence reigns. After a few seconds, one can hear someone stomping up the stairs. It is Katie, blood splattered, with a kitchen knife in her hand. She is now possessed by the demon and has murdered Micah. She sits down next to the bed and stays stiff for at least two days, only nodding her head back and forth. There is a voiceover of the answerphone, as well as Katie's friend who wants to visit the couple and at that, discovers Micah's body. Screamingly, she runs away. She will alarm the police, who then searches the house. As they arrive in the bedroom, they meet Katie. The demon has left her body and does not possess her any more. Wonderingly, she looks around and walks towards the policemen with the knife who feel endangered and, in a moment of shock - from a sudden door bang (probably the demon) - shoot Katie. Then, they search the rest of the upper floor.

I. b) Theatrical ending
Katie, already possessed by the demon, now wanders to Micah and looks at him for several hours. Then she leaves the room, goes downstairs and screams. Micah wakes up, wants to help Katie but gets murdered. Possessed Katie slowly goes back to the bedroom and throws Micah's lifeless body at the camera. Then she smells at it, looks into the lens stiffly - until her face mutates into a demon's grimace and dashes at the camera.

I. c) Unrated ending
After posessed Katie comes back to the master bedroom, she closes the door and walks slowly towards the camera. She stops, stares directly into the cam. Then she takes her knife and swiftly sclices her throat, killing herself immidiatly. After dropping dead on the floor, the cam fades to black.

II. Cut report

The theatrical version from 2009 has been compared to the Unrated Cut, released on DVD and Blu-Ray by Paramount Pictures on December, 29th 2009.

Because of the new ending, the so-called Unrated Cut runs much shorter. The difference between both versions is 188 seconds.
