Running Time Theatrical Version: 2:03:23 Min. without credits. Running Time Unrated Version: 2:03:15 Min. without credits. 27 Violence Cuts 37 Dialogue Cuts / Changes 12 Cut Scenes In the year 2007 most of the action fans think longingly of the 80s, where names like Stallone, Schwarzenegger, Seagal, van Damme and Bruce Willis stood for hard action paired with dry humour. Nowadays, Ex Wrestlers and wanna be cool young actors hardly try to fit in that role. But as a boxoffice surprise hit, Sylvester Stallone convinced the critics with his Rocky Balboa that he “still has it”. What could be more than a logical conclusion to film a sequel of one of the most popular actionmovies of the 80s – under the nonstop action fortelling title LIVE FREE OR DIE HARD? The entusiasm was early limited by the rumour, that FOX demanded to cut the movie from the, by director Len Wiseman and Bruce Willis favourized, R-Rating down to the more family fitting PG-13. Willis himself was rather furious, he wanted the sequel to be filmed in the tradition of the first one, which was not possible, in his opinion, giving the film a PG-13 rating. The fans though were also furious and started to talk the movie down. Die Hard without violence and swearing could not function, the bad guy Olyphant would be a disaster, McClanes sidekick Justin Long as well, and the action would be anyway direct from the computer. They should all been prooven wrong, because Live Free or Die Hard is an old fashioned actioner with all its contents. But still the rather gentle graphic violence was still a thorn in the fans eye. But only a few weeks later the unrated version of Live Free or Die Hard was announced, containing more violence, different dialogues (the for the franchise typically very graphic language) and different scenes. The running times in this cutreport all refer to the theatrical Cut. 4:08
