The Furies - Australian Survival Thriller With Splatter and a Thin StoryThe idea of kidnapping a group of people and abandoning them in an unfamiliar environment in order to set killers on them has often been used in films. More recent examples include The Condemned, Predators and The Hunt, which is still sitting in the Blumhouse studio vault after a mass shooting in the US happened shortly before its planned theatrical release. For the screenwriters this concept is also a convenient trick to avoid having to come up with too much background story. In this aspect, the Australian horror thriller The Furies doesn't manage to excite either when it comes to creativity. You can't really get invested in the female victims, because you hardly learn anything about them before they are murdered - often very brutally - by grotesquely masked killers. In this respect, splatter fans get pretty much what they expect, but not more. The Furies: Uncut Version and a More Harmless Version Co-ExistThe Furies exists in two versions. One of them is the original cut and the other one is a more harmless version that is e.g. released by German distributor Splendid Film. It was not produced by Splendid, but by the producing studio. It contains alternative material or is sometimes simply zoomed in. The uncensored version of The Furies is much more brutal and does not skimp on bloody close-ups. In Germany, the release of the uncut version of The Furies was reserved for the distributor Nameless Media, which could use this circumstance with the different versions well for its marketing. We'll have to wait and see whether other countries also get the harmless version on home video releases. The more harmless alternative version was compared with the uncensored original version (by Nameless Media). 10 scenes with alternative footage or zoom = no time difference Alternate Material
0:02:34: The original version (called OV from now on) shows how intestines swell out of the abdomen. No time difference
Alternate Material 0:02:43: Again. No time difference
Alternate Material 0:18:55: In the OV, the killer presses the blade of the axe laterally into Alice's face. Blood flows and you can see how the skin of the face bulges. In the alternate version (called AV from now on) it looks as if the blade does not touch the face. No time difference
Alternate Material 0:19:03: Shortly the AV shows the bloody view of the hatchet in Alice's face, but then a side view follows from a distant perspective without details. The OV is longer with the drastic view. No time difference
Alternate Material 0:19:09: This sequence shows very clearly how much the AV was toned down by using harmless material several times. In the OV, Alice’s face is gradually separated from the skull with the axe blade. Towards the end this turns out to be very bloody. No time difference
Alternate Material 0:32:58: The view of dead Sally is significantly more drastic in the OV. You can see her torn arms and the severely crippled torso. The AV chooses a side view from a distance. No time difference
No time difference
Alternate Material 1:01:16: Only the OV shows how Sheena's head is bloodily split. In the AV we see Kayla. No time difference
Alternate Material 1:02:32: The view of Sheena's body is shown in the form of a camera pan in the OV. In the AV, the image appears zoomed in and hardly moving. This way you can't really see the split skull. No time difference
Alternate Material 1:07:35: The close-up of Rose slitting Maddy's throat very bloodily can only be witnessed in the OV. The AV stays with Rose. No time difference
