Silence of the Lambs, The

Comparison:

  • Theatrical Version
  • Workprint
Release: Feb 13, 2011 - Author: brainbug1602 - Translator: brainbug1602 - external link: IMDB
Clarice Starling is in her final years at the FBI Accademy. She studies hard, earns good greats and is among the best of her class. That is why her supervisor gives her the task to recruit the imprisoned Dr. Hannibal Lecter as an informant. The Psychologist Lecter is imprisoned because her killed and ate several of his patients. She gains his trust and it seems Lecter knows something about Buffalo Bill, a serial killer who skinded and killed several women. When the daughter of Senator Martin gets kidnaped by Bill, time is running out...

"The Silence of the Lambs" is based on the novel with the same name by Thomas Harris and like in the earlier released "Red Dragon" the figure of Hannibal Lecter appears again. Anthony Hopkins gives a creepy athmosphere to the figure with pure horror under the cultivated surrvace. The movie is a very dark killer hunt with a few shock scenes.

The movie was a big success, got nominated seven times for the oscar and won five of them. This might have surprised Dino DeLaurentis, who gave the right for free to Orion Pictures, after the poor success of Manhunter. „Silence of the Lambs“ gave the careers of Jodie Foster, Anthony Hopkins and director Jonathan Demme a big boost. Hopkins played the role of Dr. Lecter another two times in the sequel „Hannibal“ and the Prequel „Red Dragon“.

There are some differences between the Workprint version and the Theatrical Release. The Workprint is more or less a final cut of the movie. Beside many minor changes, here and there are some scenes, which were removed in the Theatrical Version. The image quality of the Workprint is especially in dark scenes pretty bad.

The Workprint got an alternate Soundtrack. In some parts there is no or different music and in other parts the same music compared to the Thatrical Version. For example at the beginning when Starling runs through the wood. The Workprint features a different dark/haunting music with a musical box motive.
Furthermore all the Credits and the location names are missing in the Workprint.

Compared the the Theatrical Version the Workprint of „Silence of the Lambs“ features on the one hand many short scene extensions and cuts and also alterante scenes. Here follows a list of the most interesting scenes, that are missing in the Theatrical Version.

  • Lecter gives Starling the crypted hint to search in some old storage room. There she finds the severed head of Raspail one of Lecteres patients. In the Workprint Starling can been seen much longer while watching the glas with Rapsiald head in it. Then she lights from the torso back to the head.

  • After Brigham gave Starling her new instructions, the Workprint featuers a new scene. Starling and Brigham are in the gun room and Brigham gives her a gun.

  • Before Starling and Crawford meet the sheriff at the funeral in Elk River is a new scene in the Workprint. Crawford and Starling sit in the car and he tells her to stay open and not to work on her own. The sheriff walks to the car.

  • There is more dialogue between Crawford and Starling on the way home from the funeral in the Workprint. Starling mentions, that an insect cocoon was found in Raspails head and Lecter most likely knows the suspect.

  • A new short scenes shows Starling in a lecture. The scene is placed before news report about the abduction of Catherine.

  • Another new scene with Crawford and Starling. Both are in the car. Starling goes through some papers and mentions, that this is a good deal Lecter.

  • When Lecters leaves his cell to kill Pembry the Workprint features new scenes. Prembry crawls of the floor. Lecter follows him, opens his knife and says "Ready when you are, Sergeant Pembry.".

  • The scene in which the police officers find Pembrys body in the elvator is longer. The police officers enter the elevator. The chief takes a look at the body and says that this is not Lecter but Pembry.

  • Before the conversation between Starling and Ardelia Bill can be seen longer. He keeps on sawing on the piece of skin and starts screaming because he made a mistake.

  • The longest scene extension takes place before Starling goes to Belvedere. There is a new scene with Starling, Crawford, Burke and Krendler in the Workprint. Starling mentions, that the killer might be from Belvedere, which was implied by Lecter. Krendler appears skeptical and argues with Crawford about Lecters escape. Burke suspends Starling.

Then Crawford and Starling are leaving the building. Starling appears despite her suspension determined to go to Belvedere. Crawford gives her some money and his number.

The airplane takes off. Some scenes of Bills room can be seen. He prepared another cocoon and lays it on the table.
