In the Name of the King: A Dungeon Siege Tale

Comparison:

  • Theatrical Version
  • Extended Director's Cut
Release: Jul 03, 2009 - Author: Mike Lowrey - Translator: Mike Lowrey - external link: IMDB
The film:
The screen adaptation of the popular role-playing game made by controversially discussed director Uwe Boll (House of the Dead, Far Cry) was – as well as prior projects – pulled to pieces by film critics around the world. Boll's most expensive film with a budget of nearly 60 million Dollars can offer some established faces but despite the starpower of Jason Statham and others it was a desastrous flop. Still, if you're familiar with Boll (and his director's commentaries on the DVDs) you'll know that this doesn't bother him and he will go on producing and directing.

The director's cut:
Believing the publisher's advertisement, Boll invested more than half a year in the works on the extended director's cut of Dungeon Siege. Looking at the mass of changes and new material, this looks pretty reasonable. While the theatrical release had a runtime of 127 minutes and was heavily tightened to meet cinema standards, the DC has nearly 34 minutes of additional footage to offer. Yet when the theatrical release was announced rumors had it that Boll had planned to split the film into two parts and release them separately. However, this was cancelled and the DC was released 6 months after the theatrical version. This version apparently improves the film in many ways.

While the theatrical release went almost 2 hours already, many aspects still seemed shortened and without enough draft. The DC concentrates more on the characters, every figure gets more screentime, which is positive although not every extension seems necessary. The plot profits as well, some aspects get more attention and furthermore there's a big change in the DC. The fight sequences were extended as well although gorehounds should not expect more blood and guts.

If you already liked the theatrical version of Dungeon Siege (and keep in mind not to expect a fourth part of Lord of the Rings) you should definitely give the DC a shot. It's ultimately the clearly better version of the film.
