There is no need to make many words about the hilarious TV show "ALF". You doesn't know it has at least heard of it even though it has been quite some time since something new from the ALF universe was released. Anyway, the show consists of 4 seasons and aired in the late 80s and early 90s. Furthermore, there are two animated series ("ALF: The Animated Series" & ALF Tales) and a motion picture from the mid 90s.
As to the US Versions, a few minutes of each episode were cut for syndication in order to show more commercials. Unfortunately, these syndication versions were also released on DVD. Understandably, the fans were disappointed that the DVDs do not contain the uncut episodes. Whether or not the uncut episodes will be released one day (perhaps on Blu-ray?) is the million dollar question.
In the German Version, Katherine is sitting in her bed and writes something down. Willie is lying next to her and wakes up to his alarm clock. Katherine wishes him a good morning and adds, Willie? Your Uncle Doug is dead!
Willie: Uncle Doug's been dead for two years!
Katherine: I know! So stop sending him Christmas cards!
The US Version shows an exterior view of the Tanner's house instead.
US Version: 3 sec.
German Version: 22,5 sec.
Katherine: But as I recall, we weren't in any big hurry to get up anyway!
When Alf interrupts her and wishes them a merry Christmas, the two versions feature different shots of him doing so. The US Version shows Alf, the German Version sticks to Willie and Katherine.
US Version: 1,5 sec.
German Version: 5 sec.
Willie, Katherine und Alf sind etwas länger vor dem zersägten Weihnachtsbaum zu sehen.
The intro was shortened a bit. Alf's perspective of him opening a door and entering the room is missing.
Another small part of the intro is missing. Alf wants to get something out of the fridge and Katherine smacks his hand away.
Lynn: Alf, that was fake snow!
Alf: Well, that's it for Christmas!
Katherine: Alf, it is possible to have Christmas without snow!
Alf: I don't wanna talk about it! Let's move on to New Year's!
Willie: Now, and if you amortize that over the whole period that's just 5 Dollar a year!
Lynn: I'm with Lynn! It doesn't matter what kind of tree it is! A tree is just a symbol! Right, Brian?
Brian: What's a symbol?
Lynn: He agrees!
Willie is fidgeting with the Christmas tree. Not without problems, he even breaks off a branch.
Alf: Excuse me! Would you mind some constructive criticism?
Willie: Yes, I would!
Alf: Why don't you read the instructions?
Willie: They're in Japanese!
Alf: Then I'll read them!
Alf takes the tree's user manual and reads it.
Willie: What does it say in Englisch?
Alf: "So you weren’t able to buy a real tree!"
Willie: Just skip to the instruction part!
Trevor is curious about the unfinished Christmas tree.
Brian comments: Dad hasn't finished putting it together!
Lynn gives Trevor a glass of eggnog, which he empties with one gulp.
Trevor: So where is the old man?
Lynn: He's in the woods!
Trevor: You mean, like a religious thing, a pilgrimage?
Katherine: Well, he brought home this artificial Christmas tree!
Trevor: So you kicked him out!
Katherine: No, he went to cut down a real one!
Trevor: In that case, I'll have another eggnog! Hold the eggnog this time!
Lynn: I know!
Alternative shot of Alf giving a piece of cloth to Willie.
No difference in running time
Willie's nightmare was shortened at in two shots:
Willie: Look at our perfect Christmas! It's unraveling!
Lynn: What's he whining about now? He bought a fake tree! That figures!
Willie: Why are you dressed like that?
Lynn: My boyfriends are coming by to get me so I don't have to help decorate this synthetic stump!
Willie: You're ruining my dream!
Brian: Bye, Mom! I'm leaving for some unnamed Central American country!
Willie: But, Brian, I thought we were gonna decorate the tree!
Brian: Later, Dad! I'm off to stem the tide of Communism!
Brian walks on, then the doorbell rings.
Katherine: That'll be my lover!
Katherine walks to the door and opens it, Trevor is waiting for her on the other side.
Trevor: You ready to go, babe?
Willie schaut verdutzt drein, während Katherine zu Trevors Wagen läuft.
Trevor tells Willie Don't wait up! and laughingly runs after Katherine.
Willie to Alf: This is your fault!
Die US Version shows a short alternative shot of Willie and Katherine.
US Version: 4 sec.
German Version: 36 sec.
Alf: A small price to pay for keeping a poor boy's dream alive!
Brian: (Neat! A leaf blower!)
Alf: I hope that's the kind you like!
