Compared are the heavily censored US TV Version and the German TV Version.
The anime series Sailor Moon should ring a bell. The 200 episode series about a group of girls, who can perform magic and fight Evil is a classic which left a mark in the awareness of Japanese Productions (in both directions). No doubt about that. The series was a major success worldwide. But the German Version is quite a surprise. In comparison to Saber Rider for instance, the German Version is based on the original Japanese master and the effort to keep it as close as possible to the Original was being made. Besides a few modifications (please see below), the German Version is equal to the uncensored original Japanese Version. The US North American Version however is a different matter. The company DiC was calling the shots for the adaption of the first two seasons and Cloverway for the following two seasons. The final season 5 - "Sailor Stars" - has never been released in the US, probably because of the controversial "Sailor Starlights", which also change the gender during their transformations. The realization is legendary, but for all thw wrong reasons. It's a perfect example for heavy censorship in animes these days. After the horrors of the first season, everyone expected the worst... and it happened. DiC also created an absurd broadcast schedule. They first released 2/3 of the season (with the first 13 episodes for some reason put at the end of the broadcast) and then waited for almost three years before they bothered to do the remaining episodes (that's because they'd had the insane idea to just do 65 episodes for sydication, regardless if the story is done or not). It's also worth being mentioned that the German Version was being modified here and there, too. Zoisite e.g. is a woman as well (I guess the channel changed that) and attempts to avoid words like "kill", "die" etc. were being made, which causes an odd result in some scenes. But still: these modifications are pretty harmless in comparison to the DiC Version. Comparisons of the dialog with subtitled Japanese episodes prove how close to the Original the German dialog is. Only the comparison of the first episode of the second season (episode 47) mentions the differences of the opening and final credits, the title of the episodes, the preview of the next episode and the "Sailor Says". All these elements are being ignored in the calculation of the different lengths. Basically, cuts and modifications are the two issues that might have happened. Sometimes it's only one of them, sometimes both at the same time. The time index is based on the German Version. Episode 64: Trouble Comes Thundering DownThe Black Moon Clan has got a new tactic to draw out Chibiusa: scare her with thunder until she loses it and causes an energy discharge. Petzite sends of a droid to do the job. Too bad that Chibiusa is stuck at school during the thunderstorm and when Bunny arrives, she is gone. Chibiusa get more and more scared and even a coversation with her mentor via her Luna-P bal can't calm her down. She finally loses it and in her panic negates the gravity in abuilding, in which the other warriors are present as well. This also sows her location to Petzite. It's pue luck that Bunny and Mamoru can destroy the droid in time, as the others had been helpless in zero-G. The others by now wonder what game Chibiusa is playing, but Tuxedo Mask tells them they can't force her to talk if she doesn't want to. Length German TV Version: 19:00 Length US TV Version: 17:56 The US TV Version lacks 1 Minute und 7 Seconds of footage. [00:20]-[00:32] [-12 sec] Shortened Scene Partof the coversation between the sisters is missing. Bertherite thinks, black is he color of darkness and of clothes worn at a funeral. She congratulates Petzite for the choice, which she thinks of as a compliment.
[00:35]-[00:53] [-18 sec] Shortened Scene Another part is missing. Kermesite thinks that gold is overrated and citicises Kavalerite's make-up. Kavalerite in turn criticises that her make-up is none of her concern and that she she should shut up, considering her embarrassing dress. She adds, Kermesite obviously tries to hide her ugly skin.
[02:47]-[02:59] [-12 sec] Shortened Scene Bunny only now remembers that Ikuko will return later that day and asks Luna for a towel, while joking if she looks prettier while wet. Luna complains that this isn't the time for jokes, since Chibiusa is stuck at school in this weather.
[03:14]-[03:26] [-12 sec] Shortened Scene Bunny complains that she hates thunds, which astonishes Luna considering all the horrible things Bunny has endured as Sailor Moon. We then see the rainy city and the sign of the elementary school Chibiusa goes to.
[03:24] [+3 sec] Added Scene A short scene of Bunny running through the rain, which is from later in the episode, is added here to show, that Luna did manage to convince Bunny, to go.
[03:35]-[03:46] [-11 sec] Shortened Scene A close-by lightning strike scares the children.
[04:24]-[04:26] Altered Scene "Suzuki Sport" is written on the bus. For some reason, this was erased in the US TV Version.
[05:27]-[05:29] [-2 sec] Shortened Scene A lightning strike scares Bunny. Probably got cut because of the Kanji painted onto the bridge she's on. Strangely enough, the scene is in the episode preview.
starting at [09:16] Altered Scene Chibiusa's Luna-P ball got screwed up. It's made clear rather fast, that the ball actssort of like a telephone, allowing Chibiusa to talk to the person on the other end, who she calls "Pu". Of course, this is Sailor Pluto, as we later learn, and you can vaguely recognise her from the pixelated image in the episode. This was screwed up in the US TV Version. Here, Chibiusa talks to the BALL, as if directly answers with no one on the other end. Also, instead of the voice of Sailor Pluto, Luna's voice was used. This results in a continuity screw-up later in the season, once Pluto reveals herself.
