In the early 1990s, Vincent Pereira worked in a small video store in New Jersey and became friends with Kevin Smith. When Smith directed his cult film Clerks in 1994, Pereira helped out in front of and behind the camera in several small roles and was also involved in Smith's subsequent productions. In 1995, Pereira directed his only film, for which he also wrote the screenplay and edited, while Smith financed the project with his production company View Askew. A Better Place does without Smith's typical humor and is a rather dark youth drama with many interesting approaches. Also exciting for fans, of course, is that several supporting actors from the View Askewniverse (such as Jason Lee and Ethan Suplee) can be spotted in small roles. In the bonus material, Smith himself gets to fool around a bit, claiming in an intro with Scott Mosier that they had actually expected the film to be called “A Butter Place", because, well, everybody likes butter.

Post-production was somewhat slow, and it wasn't until 1997 that the film premiered at festivals, but unfortunately it never received a wide theatrical release. Pereira made a few adjustments for the American DVD premiere by Synapse Films in 2001. Among other things, the soundtrack was reworked and Ryan's flashbacks were added, while a few scenes were removed, which can still be found in the bonus material, including audio commentary. The original festival version was never released. On May 27, 2025, the Blu-ray premiere followed, for which the film, shot on 16mm, was scanned in 3K and Pereira once again reworked a few things. The new Director's Cut runs just under a minute longer than the old DVD version, which is included as an SD bonus. But it's not just a matter of added scenes.

First, however, let's look at the additional material: There are at least two places that clearly indicate censorship in the old DVD version. A bloody close-up of a corpse and a scene in which similarly explicit details have been removed by zooming are quite clear. Ryan's comment at the end, that God couldn't help because he is the man with the gun, also seems suspicious in this regard. Apart from that, it's mainly a few small dialogues and alternative shots that change the focus of the respective scenes a little. A few moments with a different position of the image are strange, but it's hard to read too much into them. One curious moment is where a children's slide has been retouched out of the picture, which suggests the low budget filming locations within the neighborhood.

There are possibly more, less noticeable examples of the latter: In the newly recorded intro, Pereira mentions that a few digital VFX corrections were made and/or continuity errors were fixed. In any case, we didn't discover any more than the ones listed below. At the same time, however, the introduction emphasizes that they weren't trying to be George Lucas here, and that these were only a few minor cosmetic changes. The negatives of the flashbacks (added to the Synapse DVD at the time) could not be found, and one shot had to be upscaled. In any case, this is not really noticeable in a direct comparison. All in all, this is a highly recommended HD upgrade, and the new Director's Cut is the superior version.

Running times are listed according to the following scheme
2001 SD version in 23.976 fps / Director's Cut Blu-ray in 23.976 fps

02:19 / 02:21-02:22

Barret's dead father can also be seen in close-up in the Director's Cut.

0.8 sec

09:31-09:32 / 09:34-09:37

After Barrett folds his hands above the locker, the DC has a reaction shot of Ryan. In the 2001 SD version, the follow-up shot of Walker approaching begins a little earlier.

Director's Cut 1.7 sec longer

09:35-09:36 / 09:40-09:43

Shortly afterwards, there is another re-cut to Ryan, which removes a few insignificant frames from the middle of the shot.

Director's Cut 1.6 sec longer

Alternative
09:47-09:52 / 09:54-09:59

The 2001 SD version remains completely in the same shot and you hear Ryan off-screen before he enters the frame from the right. The Director's Cut instead switches back to a frontal shot of Ryan.

Director's Cut 0.3 sec longer

09:56 / 10:03-10:21

Ryan continues: “I find it strange that you don't start with me anymore. Why is that? Are you afraid I might kick your ass?”
Walker: “You'd better shut your mouth.”
Ryan: “Why don't you make me shut my mouth? Come on. Prove to me how tough you really are.”
Walker: “Look, Ryan, I don't have a problem with you--”
Ryan: “But I have a problem with you, motherfucker! I have a problem with you constantly starting shit with smaller guys!”

18.2 sec

10:09-10:10 / 10:34-10:37

Only in the Director's Cut can you see Ryan in an additional shot when he says “You ready to fight him here, you can fight me now.”
The 2001 SD version stays with Walker, who has just been spat on, and is thus a few insignificant frames longer in the middle.

Director's Cut 2.3 sec longer

During the conversation on the boat, a shot of the beach was replaced and now shows a much larger section of the image.

Additional material in the 2001 SD version
22:49-22:52 / 23:16

In the 2001 SD version, the car drives away at the end of the shot. There is also a small jump cut at this exact point, recognizable by the different position of the clouds in the background. This is probably why the editors simply cut the scene in the DC.

+ 3.4 sec

At 25:42 / 26:04, the Director's Cut now has a soft cross-fade to the scene change, making the 2001 SD version 2 sec longer.

In the 29th/30th minute, a few more insignificant frames from the 2001 SD version are lost. In the 40th minute, the black screen is set slightly differently.

Alternative
50:17-51:33 / 50:38-51:54

When Ryan and Barret kneel next to the landowner's body by the car, the old version is zoomed in slightly throughout, cutting off bloody details at the bottom of the frame. The image used to be windowboxed with black bars at the top and bottom, and this is also the case in the SD bonus version of the Blu-ray.

Another shot of Walker whimpering “Oh, god...!”
Ryan: “I am the one with the gun. It is up to me. God is not going to save you now.”

Note: The two fatal, rather bloody shots shortly thereafter were also included uncensored in earlier versions.

80:12-80:16 / 80:41-80:51

Different close-up of Ryan's stomach wound. Only in the DC does he poke around the bullet hole a little.

When Ryan then collapses to the ground in the long shot at 80:25-80:34 / 81:00-81:09, the round edge of the camera has been removed from the sides. It also looks as if the clouds at the top right have been digitally recreated.

Note on this point: Not all such moments throughout the film were reworked. There are still some of them in the Director's Cut – and even more in shots that appear “normal” in the SD version due to the zoom used there, as the image format now offers slightly more image information on all sides. Here is an example of a moment from 69:46 / 70:07 with images.

The soft cross-fade shortly afterwards at 80:41 / 81:16 has been reset.
