The Last of Us

Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid

Comparison:

  • Theatrical Version
  • Final Preview (Criterion / Plaion)
Release: Feb 27, 2025 - Author: Muck47 - Translator: Muck47 - external link: IMDB
Plaion naturally doesn't show the introductory Criterion logo. The preview version also has a little more black screen between the Criterion logo and the MGM logo (which also appears at Plaion). Since we provide the timecodes from the Plaion Blu-ray below, you have to add 14 sec (theatrical version) or 16 sec (2nd preview) to get the corresponding time codes for the Criterion version.

To start with, a few comparison images of the yellowed and unfortunately not really restored Final Preview Cut by Criterion with the version by Plaion, which was newly assembled from the 4K restorations of the 50th Anniversary Edition, the theatrical cut and color-corrected inserts from the Final Preview by Criterion. A separate comparison between the preview versions from Criterion and Plaion revealed no differences in terms of content; here, the various sources of material have been meticulously brought into line with the correct order of the film, with a uniformly good image, so to speak. This means that instead of the consistently pale yellowish look of Criterion's Final Preview, you now get to see the more colorful image of the 4K restorations. Even the nasty, huge reel change scratch in the picture during the 78th minute (last picture) is no longer a problem.

00:08 / 00:08-01:20

After the MGM logo, the preview version shows two credit inserts on a black background (which were also reconstructed for the 50th Anniversary Cut). Then it continues in 1909 and you see a much older Pat. He is wandering around with Poe and they are talking during a carriage ride.

Pat: “Thought I told you not to run them sheep on my land!"
Poe: “It's my land, Garrett. Became mine when we signed that lease."
Man: “He's right, Mr. Garrett."
Pat: “I'm paying you off when we get back. And I'm breaking that goddamn lease."
Poe: “I don't allow the law would agree to that."
Pat: “What law is that? The Santa Fe Ring law? Shit. Goddamn law is ruining the country."
Poe: "Whoa! Ain't you still a part of that law?"
They stop and get off the coach; “Something wrong with that harness."
Poe: “I believe they elected you and paid you good wages for killing the Kid, huh?"
Pat: “You rotten son of a bitch."

Once again, screenshots of the Criterion version:

Plaion mainly uses the restored and otherwise identical scene from the 50th Anniversary Cut:

The fade-in referring to 1881 is different in the subsequent version.

The first shot of a buried chicken that follows is also a few frames longer.

00:40-00:41 / 01:54-01:57

The first of many such adjustments: Only in the preview cut Billy's shooting practice with the chickens was combined with the other time-leap scenes in which Pat is shot. As a result, Billy is shown for a moment longer in the theatrical version and thus fires the shot onscreen.

00:43 / 01:59-02:23

A few more reaction shots of shots fired at old Pat and Billy in front of the chickens were removed. The theatrical cut continues with Billy's words “You try your luck, Eno."

During the shots shown here, you can still hear from the off: “Got goddamn-near perfect."

In the preview cut, the camera moves back to Pat as he dies, and after re-ordered scenes of Billy and the chickens, the title card appears.

In contrast, the theatrical version begins a little earlier with the subsequent shot of Pat arriving.

The theatrical cut now shows a different re-ordered scene with the people outside, during which one of them comments: “You don't figure he's too good to drink with us, do you?"
- "Maybe it's the other way around."

In the preview cut, you see the girl cooking inside instead. Then, a little earlier, Billy moves from the back to the front to Pat.

He walks out and Billy looks up.

17.6 sec

Alternative / Additional material in the theatrical version
05:52-07:39 / 09:58-10:26

In the theatrical version, Billy is shown a little longer and the credits follow over frozen images with a softer fade.

In the Preview Cut, someone off-screen replies to Billy's previous statement that he would not kill Pat because he is his friend: “He ain't no more."
Billy finishes his whiskey and says: "I reckon."
After a black fade-out, there are a few exterior shots show the law enforcers positioning themselves in front of Billy's hideout.

For comparison, here are the last two screenshots from the Criterion version of the Preview Cut. This material is also missing from the 50th Anniversary Cut, which was also restored in 4K, and so Plaion was only able to match the same image source by adjusting the color grading.

Theatrical version 78.4 sec (= 1:18 min) longer

Re-ordered scene
08:21-08:27 / 11:09-11:15

In the preview cut, Pat and co can be seen first, then there's a view over the shoulder at the hut. These two shots were swapped for the theatrical cut.

No time difference

08:43 / 11:31-11:36

Charlie is still looking out the door, and another re-ordered scene with Billy.

5 sec

Here, by the way, is the shot of Charlie that follows immediately afterwards, which could again be taken from the 4K-restored image sources and which, admittedly, is clearly different in terms of color:

Before Pat orders the shooting to stop, Billy crawls inside to Charlie in the theatrical version. Charlie whimpers a little; “Help me up. Oh! Sweet Mary's ass. Don't let me go down. They killed me. I'm gut-shot for sure."
Another shot is heard and Billy dodges to the side.

12:25 / 15:36-15:37

Between shots of Pat and Billy running for cover, the preview cut also has a shot from a more distant perspective.

1,3 sec

12:48 / 16:00-16:04

Pat and co. again. Billy's “Coming out, Pat!" can be heard, which was added to the subsequent frame in the theatrical cut.

3,3 sec

13:00 / 16:16-16:18

Pat can be seen a little earlier, smoking.

1,9 sec

15:17 / 18:35-18:37

Before Billy's “What do you believe in, Bell?" you see Pat grinning again.

2.1 sec

15:25 / 18:45-18:53

Bell answers differently, which is why his comment was already moved in the theatrical cut for the shot that is included identically; “The only belief I have, Billy, is knowing I'm a little man with a job to do. (I do believe I'm gonna have to see that bet...)"

7.9 sec

15:58 / 19:26-19:44

Pat says: “Say, Bob? What else you believe in? Besides God."
Bob: “Me."
Pat: “Just like old Ollinger. Always got to have a minority opinion on everything."
Billy grins.

18,6 sec

Additional material in the theatrical version
16:20-16:21 / 20:06

In the theatrical version, a shot of Billy starts a little earlier.

+ 1.2 sec

16:26 / 20:11-20:12

Shortly afterwards, Bob's comment is a bit choppy in the theatrical cut: "(Enough to spread you out ike a crazy woman)'s quilt."

In principle, you can also hear this in the theatrical cut, but the bold part goes directly into Pat's "Bob!" and is therefore less easy to understand.

1.2 sec

16:45 / 20:31-20:32

Pat and Bob a little longer.

1,1 sec

18:09 / 21:56-22:05

Bob continues to work himself up into a rage: “Not till you taste the fear of the Lord. I'll show you."
Bell is already trying to stop him off-screen: “Bob, stop."
Bob: “I'll take you for a walk across hell on a spider web. Your trouble, boy, is you don't know about God!"

8.6 sec

18:17 / 22:13-22:14

An insignificant longer shot.

1.4 sec

Alternative / Additional material in the theatrical version
18:39-18:46 / 22:36-22:52

Bob says goodbye differently, and again some of the dialog was shortened.

In the theatrical version, he says, “It's gonna be a loose rope and a long drop."
He puts on his hat and Billy is seen again.

In the preview version, you can already hear this sentence over the previous shot of Billy and Bell. Then Bob's shot begins at the moment when the theatrical version cuts out, and here he adds: “Why, good people are coming just to see your poor sinning spirit meet the devil. And I'm aiming to please them. Making sure you say a Lord's Prayer before you do a proper cake walk and soil your drawers."

In the theatrical version, Billy sits down inside. Then the two of them walk across the yard outside.

In the preview version, the shot changes immediately to the horses outside. At this point, the off-screen dialog between Bell and Billy begins, which is identical to the theatrical version, and alternative perspectives are then shown.

20:47 / 24:43-24:49

The scene in the stairwell begins a little earlier, and Billy says: “Now, you was a friend of Carlisle's, wasn't you, Bell?"
Bell: "You know I was."

6.1 sec

The dialog above the identical part of the shot that follows was also re-recorded. Billy thus has a different explanation of how he killed Carlisle.

Theatrical version:
Billy: “Shot him three times in the back. Blew his goddamn head off."

Preview Cut:
Bell: "I heard it from Sam Deadrick."
Billy: "Yeah. And now I'd like you hear it from me."

20:59 / 25:01-25:05

The same shot is also a bit longer.

3.7 sec

When Billy shoots Bell and then Bob shortly afterwards, only the theatrical cut has a bit of background music to build tension.
