The theatrical cut shows Bill shortly afterwards a little earlier, but thus omits some of Pat's comments to the boy: "(I want you to) run all the way down to my house, tell Mrs. Garrett that I'm gonna be home for dinner. And then I want you to (stampede-like over to the courthouse)"

While the theatrical version fades softly to the next scene with Pat...

...the preview cut briefly switches to Billy trotting around outside. To accompany this, "Better get me a posse started" can also be heard at the beginning.

After Alias has left, Pat is seen walking a few steps towards a house. Right after that, the Final Preview Cut shown here differs a bit from the Turner Preview Cut, as described in the corresponding report on the cuts.

Since we are following the final preview version here, you can see an appearance by Mrs. Garrett (Ida) that was missing from the theatrical cut, but is included in the 2005 Special Edition and the 50th Anniversary Edition. Inside the house, the couple, who are obviously somewhat estranged from each other, talk to each other. Ida criticizes the fact that Pat has hardly been there for her since his appointment as sheriff and threatens to leave him. He angrily tears down a curtain and says that they will discuss it when the matter with Billy is settled. Ida gives him another unencouraging comment before Pat leaves the house.

Ida: "They say William Bonney has escaped."
Pat: "He has. And he's in old Mexico, I hope. Where we should be if I had any sense. If not, I'II go after him. Got too much riding on it not to. I figure that's why they elected me. Anyways, I don't give a damn. I brought him in once, I can do it again. If I have to."
Ida: "You might say that you are glad to see me. It's been over a week that you've been gone."
Pat: "I'm sorry. I've gotta go down to the saloon. There's a drunk down there causing a lot of trouble. Goes by the name of Alamosa Bill. Said he rode with the Kid down in West Texas."
Ida: "Will you be blessing this house with your presence for dinner?"
Pat: "Oh, it looks like it's gonna be a long night."
Ida: "It's been a long year."
Pat: "Not now."
Ida: "My people don't talk to me. They say you've been getting to be too much of a gringo since you've been sheriff, that you've made deals with Chisum. You don't touch me. You are dead inside. I wish you'd never put on that badge."
Pat: "Not now!"
Ida: "Sí, ahora! Or I won't be here when you get back!"
Pat: "We'll deal with this...when it's over."
Ida: "I hope he gets away."
Pat: "Well, he won't. There's too much play in him."
Ida: "And not enough in you."

Some shots of Billy riding around are also missing at the end, with a song by Bob Dylan playing again. However, these scenes also come a few minutes later in the theatrical version, after the conversation between Pat and Wallace. There are a few other minor differences:

35:18 / 39:21-39:28

Billy's first shot begins a little earlier in the preview cut.

7.4 sec

35:37 / 39:47-39:55

Re-ordered scene
53:35 or 58:43-61:13 / 62:35-65:05

Right after that, Pat can be seen sitting at a fireplace in the preview cut, and Pope comes to him. This longer scene comes in the theatrical version unchanged about 5 minutes later.

53:35 / 65:05-67:13

The part when Pat then goes to John Chisum and unsuccessfully asks for more information about Billy's whereabouts is completely missing. It starts with a short rodeo interlude in which a rider falls. When Pat arrives, Chisum first complains about some unsolved thefts on his property. He sarcastically answers Poe's question about Billy with several possible locations and ironically asks if Poe might not want to stay for dinner. They part on fairly respectful terms, with Chisum just wanting to know if Pat is going to catch Billy.

Man: "Garrett to see you, Mr. Chisum."
Chisum: "All right. Somebody else try him."
Man: "Yes sir."
Chisum: "Mescaleros stole 40 head of horses last week."
Pat: "Yeah, I heard they, uh, was off the reservation."
Chisum: "And Bonney tried to steal a few head a couple of weeks ago."
Pat: "Well, he says you owe him $500 back salary."
Chisum: "He rode for me. I treated him just like any other man. Sheriff, tell me something. Why did you ride all the way out here?"
Poe: "We thought maybe you heard something."
Chisum: "Yeah. I'll tell you what I heard. Billy the Kid is in Toscosa. Billy the Kid is in Tombstone. Billy the Kid is in Mexico, Tularosa, Socorro, White Oaks. And Billy the Kid is at my table right at this moment, eating tacos and green chili peppers with my niece, just like old times. You staying for supper?"
Pat: "No, thanks."
Chisum: "Mr. Poe?"
Poe: "I... Yes, I could eat."
Chisum: "Fine. Bunkhouse is right behind the large barn. Men usually eat when the cook lets them. Interesting meeting you, Mr. Poe. Perhaps I'll see you again sometime. Glad to be of service, Garrett. But don't overuse it.
Pat: "I appreciate the loan."
Chisum: "You gonna get him?"

Theatrical cut corresponds to the Turner preview cut
53:35-53:54 / 67:13

In the preview version, the Mexican is approached by a henchman: "There's a lot of land between here and the border. And it's all Chisum's. Better keep those sheep moving, or they're gonna end up on his table."
Mexican: "I have no quarrel with Chisum. It's an old war that is over. Let him alone and he will let you alone."
Billy: "Don't you believe it, my friend."

In the theatrical cut, there is a different reaction shot of the audience.

When Pat takes a few steps forward, the theatrical cut says, "Don't seem the best way to be tracking a man down."
The preview versions instead say, "I tell you one thing, though. Best get the Kid soon."

At the end of the scene, the preview version has the bar owner Lemuel elaborate further: "Hey, you know what she always said about the cowboys? She always wished they had a pair of loose boots. She wanted to strap them with a little tight pussy and give them a warm place to shit for two dollars. You know something? You can't beat that, can you?"
Pat takes another sip.

In the theatrical version, Lemuel just says, "You know something? You can't beat that, can you?" and, unlike in the preview cut, it's completely onscreen. Then you see a short part of the shot of the pensive Pat.
