Insight of Evil

Comparison:

  • R-Rated
  • Unrated Director's Cut
Release: Aug 24, 2015 - Author: Mike Lowrey - Translator: Mr Miau - external link: IMDB
Director Nigel Hartwell’s debut work Insight of Evil from 2004 is a really amateur-like horror movie which could stem directly from a movie class. The actors' wooden playing is not exactly aided by the annoying music and cheap special effects. Hartwell himself must have realized that this movie is far from par because he made the remake Dead by Dawn in 2009. And this could have been the end of it. However, for some reason he recently released a Director’s Cut version featuring some new CGI, which is still as unnecessary as the original…

Comparison between the R-Rated DVD (by New Blood Entertainment) and the Unrated Director's Cut DVD (by Leomark Studios).

The R-Rated runs 139,5 sec. resp. about 2 minutes 40 seconds longer than the Unrated.
Alternative Intro
0:00:00: The son is writing his farewell letter in both versions and is then found dead by his father. However, the R-Rated begins with the shot of a birthday party while the Unrated shows a girl saying she did not know how everything happened eight months ago. Her twin sister Tiffany claimed that her friend Chris had raped her. Shortly afterwards, he committed suicide.
R-Rated 83 Sec. longer

Alternative Footage
0:05:51: In the flashback, Chris’ eyes are different. This can be seen exemplary for the rest of the movie: every character possessed by the ghost have undergone a digital eye treatment.
No difference in running time

R-RatedUnrated

Alternative Footage
0:07:42: The R-Rated only shows a hand, in the UR a woman can be heard screaming before a ghost vision.
R-Rated 1 Sec. longer

R-RatedUnrated

Alternative Footage
0:10:08: Different versions, the R-Rated is more graphic.
R-Rated 1,5 Sec. longer

R-RatedUnrated

Extended Scene in the Unrated
0:11:23: Tanya explains (again, for the inattentive viewer) that she had an argument with her mother because she did not want to hear anymore of Tanya’s nightmares. Tanya then goes to school with her friend Meagan. The R-Rated shows the text overlay "Meagan Moore - The Party Girl" instead.
9 Sec.

Extended Scene in the Unrated
0:13:05: Another explanatory scene for a character. This time it is Jason the drug dealer, who turned out to be most trustworthy for Tanya. The R-Rated shows an overlay again: "Jason Bender - The Drug Dealer".
14 Sec.

Alternative Footage
0:14:34: When Tanya is falling asleep in class, she is having different visions of Tiffany’s ghost calling her to the house.
UR 17 Sec. longer

R-RatedUnrated

Alternative Footage
0:16:03: Tanya says that Ryan always tried to be there for her when Tiffany disappeared. As if he tried to tell her something but was too scared. The text overlay in the R-Rated says "Ryan Levy - The Loser" and is longer before the chat between Tanya and Ryan starts.
No difference in running time

Extended Scene in the R-Rated
R-Rated: 0:18:32: Jordan is being introduved via a text overlay, then there is a flashback illustrating that he and his brother do not really like their fathers partner.
31 Sec.

Extended Scene in the Unrated
0:20:06: In the UR Tanya announces another vision.
6 Sec.

Extended Scene in the Unrated
0:23:23: Tanya continues the explanations. She says that she felt someone watching her. Now she knows that it was her sister’s ghost looking out for her.
9 Sec.

Extended Scene in the R-Rated
R-Rated: 0:31:18: Tanya and Jason get to know each other better while taking a walk.
92 Sec.

Extended Scene in the R-Rated
0:34:02: Tanya complains to Jason about the situation with her twin sister Tiffany, who rather wants to party than spend time with her. Tiffany also once went with a guy and later said he had raped her, causing him to commit suicide. Tiffany then disappeared at another party and is still missing.
97 Sec.

Extended Scene in the Unrated
UR: 0:34:02: There is a new dialog scene between Tanya and Jason about Tiffany. The content is basically the same, but the UR features the additional information that Tiffany was dating the guy who she claimed raped her a whole summer and that she became depressive after his suicide.
149 Sec.

Alternative Footage
0:38:22: When Tanya has fallen unconscious, the vision montages in the two versions are different. This is very hard to display here without having a two page picture fest, so the author’s word will have to suffice: the changes are irrelevant.
R-Rated 42 Sec. longer

Extended Scene in the Unrated
UR: 0:44:45: The display of the camcorder shows Ryan that Tanya could actually be Tiffany’s ghost.
9 Sec.

Extended Scene in the Unrated
0:48:07: Jordan and Meagan are looking each other in the eyes while having sex. Intense. And no, no pictures.
5 Sec.

Extended Scene in the Unrated
0:52:04: A close-up of Jordan’s dead parents.
2 Sec.

Extended Scene in the Unrated
UR: 1:06:14: This addition is rather hard to understand. But it seems to be a ghost vision and someone says that it had just started.
22 Sec.

Alternative Footage
1:06:37: When the corpse is being recovered, the UR shows shots of the wounded Tanya, saying that all her friends are dead and that she is probably the main suspect now. The R-Rated is a bit longer here and there is also a radio commentary, in which the speakers sum up what happened. However, supernatural events cannot be completely ruled out as the twin sister was never found. Can it be that telepathy was involved?
R-Rated 34 Sec. longer
