The R-Rated version, obtained from the German VHS tape has been compared to the uncut and unrated DVD by 84 Entertainment.
There are 83 differences adding up to 9 minutes and 5 seconds: 55 cuts in the FSK 18 version = 10 minutes and 39.25 seconds. 1 cut in the unrated version = +13 seconds. 2 alternate scenes = No time difference. 17 alternate editings = 56.75 Seconds. 8 edits = +2 minutes and 18 seconds. Cult director Stuart Gordon and producer Brian Yuzna created one of the most important and best horror films from the 80s with Re-Animator, which still has a cult status to this day. Of course, two more or less well done sequels followed which couldn't match the original, though. The movie is by the way based on a story by H.P. Lovecraft.
Of course, there are several versions of the movie. A recital of the different versions follows now: Rated R: The movie was cut to get the R-Rating in the USA for theatrical releases. Many gory scenes had to go, which were partly replaced with harmless alternate scenes. The studio thought that what was left of the runtime was too short, so they integrated plot scenes that were cut before, to adjust the runtime a little. This version was never director Stuart Gordon's favored version, though. The R-Rated version was released in the USA only on LD, apart from the theatrical release. The VHS-Version (as far as is known) as well as the US-DVDs contain the unrated version. Director's Cut/Unrated: The unrated version, which often is being labelled as Director's Cut is completely uncensored considering violence. But the reimplemented plot scenes, which the R-Rated version contains, are missing. The Unrated is the director's favored version and was scheduled like this as it is. Integral Cut: This version offers a fusion of the unrated and rated R versions. Among others, it was released in Germany by CMV and not only contains all the gory details, but also the plot scenes of the R-Rated cut. UK-Tape/DVD: Apart from the Anchor Bay-DVD, the movie was only released slightly cut on VHS and DVD in England. 1 min

51 min As Halsey is still being attacked by the zombie, West sneaks up from behind and presses a bonesaw through the zombie's body, which treads out the belly. Dan watches this disgustedly as the zombie lifelessly drops to the ground. West goes to Halsey's corpse and drags with over to Dan. Dan says that the reanimated one has acted like an animal. West answers that he was possibly dead for too long. He also says that they need to reanimate Halsey as soon as possible, because he has just died and thus his body is still fresh. Dan first hesitates, but then he and West grab Halsey's body and carry it to the stretcher, laying it down there. West tells Dan to bring the cassette recorder and the serum, while he ties Halsey's body to the stretcher. The head falls down several times, though, and West's attempts to keep it upright fail. He then takes a small note skewer and presses the head on it.
