John Wick: Chapter 4

Eye of the Cat

Comparison:

  • US TV Version
  • Theatrical Version
Release: Apr 22, 2018 - Author: brainbug1602 - Translator: Tony Montana - external link: IMDB
Compared are the US TV Version and the Theatrical Version (both available on the US Blu-ray by Scream Factory).

Hairdresser Kassia finds out her wealthy customer Danny is going to die soon and her cats are supposed to inherit the entire fortune. Kassia and Wiley, Danny's favorite nephew, plan to change the will for Wiley to benefit from it and kill Danny afterwards. The problem is Wiley's fear of cats plus there is his brother Luke who is living with Danny as well and he figures out what is really going on pretty fast.

If one can live with a few plotholes, Eye of the Cat is a rather suspenseful thriller with killer cats ending including a quite surprising plot twist. Also, the San Francisco setting including its hippie/drug culture looks pretty nice.

In addition to the Theatrical Version, there is a second cut edited for a broadcast on US TV. This US TV Version lacks any kind of nudity and also some violence. Furthermore, reshoots were being made for the US TV Version and deleted scenes are back in the movie as well. The most striking difference can be found in the finale though. While Kassia is being chased by a bunch of blood-thirsty cats in the Theatrical Version, one red cat is the major threat in the US TV Version. Other than that, the new footage are basically filler shots: Luke and Danny talk about Wiley's return, the doc has his own opinion about Wiley and he would love to kick him to the curb but Luke promises to talk care of it. Right before the end credits begin, there is a little scene that shows Wiley actually leaving the house.
For today's standards, the sex scenes are pretty lame and yet they have been removed consequently. Kassia catching Wiley with some bimbo for instance is completely missing. As compensation, a scene with a woman opening the door and then slamming it Kassia's face has been added for TV. The sex scene with Wiley and Kassia at the greenhouse has been replaced by alternate shots and incest implication between Wiley and Danny is also missing in the US TV Version.

Qualitywise, the Theatrical Version on the Scream Factory Blu-ray is incredibly well. The picture quality of the US TV Version is rather bad and it is in full screen as well. But still, it is a pretty nice bonus.
