Compared are the cut Syndicated Version (UK Blu-ray by Fabulous Films / First Edition) and the uncut Original Version (German DVD by Universal).
- 4 cuts
- 1 recut
- Length difference: 355.2 sec resp. 5 min 55.2 sec
Please note: Minor differences such as missing credits, missing or different black screens etc. have not been listed in the following comparison. The focus is on the alteration made for reruns in syndication and that is it.
Basically, the UK Blu-ray is a highly recommendable release even though some people complain about the abscene of the TV movie "Knight Rider 2000" because it is available as bonus of the DVD release. The problem is that this was originally another pilot for second Knight Rider series that never saw the light of day. So technically, the movie is not part of the original Knight Rider from 1982. However, definately worth criticizing is the fact that the Blu-ray set only contains the shorter Syndicated Versions of all the two-part episodes which have been cut to a length of approx. 45 minutes (Blu-ray / NTSC) in order to fit in the slot.
But at least one has the chance to get the discs with the uncut episodes via Fabulous Films. One can either send the discs with the Syndicated Versions and get a free replacement or one can keep the old discs and get the ones with the uncut episodes for a small fee (payment via Paypal). Either way, the new discs then will be shipped to your address.
According to Fabulous Films, the first batch with the shorter episodes is completely sold out. But of course, there is still a slight chance that one gets a copy of those because the vendor still has some in stock.
Last but not least, a few words about the Syndicated Versions: Admittedly, they are still OK to watch but fans will realize that scenes are missing. The huge exception here is the pilot "Knight of the Phoenix". While the alterations of the second part of the pilot are being kept within bounds, they did a real number on the first part of the pilot. Including the opening, "Knight of the Phoenix Part 1" has a total length of approx. 3.5 minutes (!) and after that, the second part already begins. Basically, everything is missing. If one is not familiar with the show or the story of the pilot, it is incredibly hard to follow resp. I would say it is almost impossible. This is also the reason why the Syndicated Version of the pilot only consists of one single episode while the other two-part episodes still consist of two episodes each. Considering that there are only 3.5 minutes left of the first part of the pilot, this is not a surprise though.

Immediately after the opening resp. right at the beginning of the second part of the two-part episode, the first cut has been made. Once again, it is a scene with Michael and K.I.T.T.
Michael: "You know, you're right, buddy. This is becoming a career. I think it's time to force their hand."
Michael accelerates and catches up with the very same truck that is responsable for the cop's death.
K.I.T.T.: "Michael, that's a 4.7 mm rocket launcher."
Michael: "I got you, pal."
Michael U-turns and tries to escape when a rocket hits the ground right next to him. A second rocket is being fired. It is not a direct hit but it was a close one.
K.I.T.T.: "Michael, that rocket still has us in ist sights."
Michael: "Then we're gonna have to outrun him, pal. Hit it!"
Michael accelerates to finally get away. Nonetheless, a third rocket is being fired. This time, the rocket hits the ground on the left. Then they are gone.
A conversation between Michael and David follows.
Michael: "We're onto a fortune in gold, a rocket launcher hidden in a semi and Eduardo O'Brian."
David: "This thing's like a octopus. Every time we turn around, there's a new tentacle."
Michael: "Maybe you shouldn't have let her go."
David: "I tried to talk her out of it. She said it was her constitutional right or something like that."
Michael: "How long have they been gone?"
David: "What? Oh, about an hour. Look, it's her life, right? I just hope she doesn't blow everythig sky high."
Michael: "I'm gonna go check out those dump trucks you mentioned. You wanna come?"
David: "Eh, no. I better stick around, just in case."
Michael: "Yeah, right. Just in case."
Michael is on his way to K.I.T.T. while David looks at the sea.

The beginning of the scene with Eduardo and Joanna on Eduardo's yacht is also missing.
Eduardo: "I know so little about you."
Joanna: "Well, no less than I know about you. You seem a study in contrasts, you know? Even your name, Eduardo O'Brian. Are you Mexican or Irish?"
Eduardo: "Both. My mother was Mexican, my father was Irish. They had two things in common: Catholism ad sex. Neither was enough."
Eduardo: "Oh, never be sorry. People get together. They share, they learn and then they part. Life is like eh… like water. If it stays too long in one place, it goes bad. I sense that you know that."
Joanna: "Oh, you're very intuitive. So am I."
Eduardo: "What do you sense in me?"
Joanna: "Oh, let's see. Ehm… you pride yourself on your skill with weapons… and you’re a gambler. You can't resist a challenge."
Eduardo laughs: "You are very intuitive."
Joanna: "And logical. And logic tells me that if I were to challenge you to a trapshoot at, say eh… 1000 dollars a pigeon, you couldn't say no."
Eduardo laughs, then they drink.
Then a small scene at Eduardo's office. It is being searched for bugs and it does not take long until they find something.
Employee #1: Get Mr. Mathews.
Please note: The Syndicated Version contains this small scene as well but a bit later.

Joanne's conversation with David is missing.
David: "You told him what?"
Joanna: "I had no choice."
David: "Yeah but everything you said was a lie."
Joanna: "What did you want me to do? Tell him the truth?"
Joanna: "Well, exactly. You can't have it both ways."
David: "What if he decides to check?"
Joanna: "Oh, I'm convinced he will."
David: "We're dead."
Joanna: "Not necessarily. I had a nice little chat with Priscella. She's gonna cover for me."
David: "I should've never let you go."
Joanna: "You had nothing to do with it. I went on my own."
David: "That's what I mean. Joanna, a man like Eduardo O'Brian isn't limited to checking with personal friends."
Joanna: "Well, you're the professional. You told me you had ways to take care of things."
David: "Things, yeah. But a whole life invented over crab legs and skeet shooting. Why did you have to tell him a Carribean island?"
Joanna: "You'll have to talk louder."
David: "I said why did you have to tell him you were married to a treasure hunter on a Carribean island?"
Joanna: "Would it have made it any easier if I'd said a show salesman in Des Moines?"
David sighs: "I guess not."
Joanne: "Thank you."
David is on the phone with David, his superior at the DoJ.
David: "Listen, Archibald. I need a little help. You know that woman I mentioned? No, no, no. Not that one. The one that got me into Elton Matthews' study. Yeah, well, it's a long story but Eduardo O'Brian cornered her about her past. She did the only thing she could. She lied. I may need you to cover it, in case he checks. I know, I know, I know. It's a lot to ask but we've got no other choice. Thanks. Thanks, I appreciate it. Hold on a minute."
After sitting on the couch the entire time, Joanna now puts some notes about her cover in front of David.
David: "There's more?"
Joanna: "It was a long lunch."
David continues the conversation with Archibald.
David: "Arch, you may need a pencil. First of all, she's been married twice. Once to a treasure hunter and once to a South African diamond dealer."
Archibald is so upset about this that one can hear him scream through the phone.
Archibald: "What? You can't do that…"
David holds the phone further away because Archibald is so loud.
Joanna: "What's he saying?"
David: "You don't wanna know."
Joanna: "Well, maybe this will help soothe the pain."
Joanna gives David a further piece of paper.
David: "What's this? Your dress size?"
Joanna: "The combination to the yacht's safe?"

A scene at Eduardo's estate is missing. Eduardo is walking across the garden with one of his men.
Eduardo: "Eight shots in a row. I should have known then."
Employe: "Maybe we can postpone it."
Employe: "Eduardo, they're onto us."
Eduardo explains: "A little information is like a little power: You always want more."
