Jarhead 2: Field of Fire

Comparison:

  • R-Rated
  • Unrated
Release: Sep 05, 2014 - Author: Mike Lowrey - Translator: Mike Lowrey - external link: IMDB
Jarhead 2: Field of Fire is a mildly entertaining war thriller set in the Afghanistan setting and tries to feed off of the reputation of the theatrical film from 2005 with Jake Gyllenhaal in the starring role. Contentwise, it's no big surprise that there aren't really any connections except for some calm pauses between the many shootouts with the Taliban, which are used to philosophize about the horrors and meaning of war. It bares the question who'd get excited for a film like this when it competes against Oscar-winning films in the same setting.

In the US, the film was a direct-to-video premiere and exists in 2 different versions on DVD and Blu-ray. Apart from the Unrated, there's also an "R" rated version (for war violence and language including sexual references) that is a wonderful example of the US' absurd relationship to nudity. The violence cut seems redundant, as well, considering the other violence displayed in the film.

Comparison between the R-Rated and the Unrated Version (both included on the US DVD/BD set by Universal Pictures).

2 scenes with alternate material = no time difference
Alternate material
0:10:16: Yeah, nudity. During filming, they obviously did two takes, once with the naked soldier in the front, once without him. Merrimette's pose doesn't change, though.
No time difference

Alternate material
0:33:36: The UR shows a close-up of the taliban soldier being hit by two bullets. The R-Rated is more distanced.
