Charley One-Eye

original title: Charley-One-Eye

Comparison:

  • UK DVD (Odeon Entertainment)
  • Original cut (Vinegar Syndrome)
Release: Jun 23, 2025 - Author: brainbug1602 - Translator: Muck47 - external link: IMDB

The UK DVD from Odeon Entertainment was compared with the US Blu-ray from Vinegar Syndrome Labs.

Deserting soldier Ben flees through the desert in the Wild West in search of refuge – pursued by his inner demons and the hostile environment. On his escape, he encounters a taciturn, wounded Native American who has also fallen out of society. A tense relationship develops between the two outsiders, marked by mistrust, a will to survive, and unspoken solidarity. Together, they hide in an abandoned church while the hostile world lurks outside, including a racist bounty hunter who is just waiting for an opportunity to hunt them down or play them off against each other.

Charley One-Eye is an unusual western that strays from the beaten path of the genre – sparse, symbolic and with a bitter tone. Themes such as racism, war trauma and isolation in a hostile world take centre stage. It is directed by Don Chaffey (Jason and the Argonauts).

There appear to be two different versions of Charley One-Eye. A shorter version with a running time of around 84 minutes and the uncut version with a running time of around 107 minutes. The cut version was released in the UK on DVD by Odeon Entertainment and on Blu-ray by Screenbound Pictures at the end of 2024. A review in the SWDB confirms that it contains the same version as the DVD.

In Germany, the film was released on DVD by Studio Hamburg / Movie Power. With a running time of just over 83 minutes, this version is slightly shorter. It is possible that further cuts were made in the German version.

On July 29, 2025 (available earlier via direct order), Vinegar Syndrome Labs released the film on Blu-ray in the USA. This release contains the uncut version. It appears that only scenes involving plot development have been cut. The cuts range from short scene reductions to entire sections being removed. The cuts were probably intended to speed up the sometimes meditative Western.
