2.14 Can I Get a Witness?

Comparison:

  • US Version
  • German Version
Release: Mar 28, 2015 - Author: Eiskaltes Grab - Translator: DaxRider123 - external link: IMDB - more from this series
Compared are the cut episodes on the US DVD by Lions Gate / FOX and the uncut episodes on the German DVD by Warner Home Video.

The differences:

6 cuts = 3 minutes and 8.5 seconds.

One certainly needs to make no words about the hilarious TV show "ALF". Even those who have not seen it have at least heard of it even though it has been quite some time since something new from the ALF universe was released. Anyway, the show consists of 4 seasons and was aired in the late 80s and early 90s. Furthermore, there are two animated series ("ALF: The Animated Series" & ALF Tales) and a motion picture from the mid 90s.

As for the US Versions, a few minutes of each episode were cut for syndication in order to show more commercials. Unfortunately, these syndication versions were also released on DVD. Understandably, the fans were disappointed that the DVDs do not contain the uncut episodes. Whether or not the uncut episodes will be released one day (perhaps on Blu-ray?) is the million dollar question.

Willie watches a football game. Alf comes in.
Alf: Oh, Football! Can I watch too?
Willie: Alf, last time we watched football together you belched all through the whole game!
Alf: Hey, that's how we applaud on Melmac!
Alf looks at the TV and says "Hey, good catch!" Then he starts burping.
Katherine: No more applause, please!
Alf: All right, I'll just clap!
Brian: Hey, Dad, wanna play football?
Willie: Oh, yeah, sure, why not? It's almost halftime anyway!
Alf: Can I play too?
Willie: Well, sure! Come on, Kate, we'll all play!
Katherine: I'll pass!
Alf: No, I wanna pass!
Katherine: I mean, I don't wanna play!
Alf: Why, because I won't let you pass?
Brian: Come on, Alf!
Alf follows Brian while burping. Katherine shakes her head.
Katherine: I said no applause!
Alf: That wasn't applause! That was root beer!

After Katherine threw a football at Alf and he replied that she should not be so wild since she would otherwise destroy the lawn, the US Version misses out on Willie and Katherine walking to Alf at the window. He immediately goes away.

The conversation about the broken window is a little longer in the German Version:
Willie: The football came down in the Ochmoneks' backyard and then it broke their window!
Alf: Now, I find that hard to believe! See, if there's one sound I recognize, it's glass breaking! Also china breaking, ceramics breaking, appliances breaking...
Willie: I think my point is made!
Lynn: Dad, we can't be sure that Alf broke the window!
Alf: Thank you, Lynn! Maybe Lynn broke it!
Lynn: I didn't but there could be other explanations!
Alf: Oh, yeah, there could be lots of explanations!
Willie: Like what?
Alf: Explanation one: The Ochmonkes invited Ella Fitzgerald over for tea! Ella hits a high C! Whammo, there goes the window! Explanation two: Dough Henning comes over! He accidentally levitates Trevor through...
Willie: Stop this! Stop this at once!
Alf: But I have 18 more! Although the last few are a little far-fetched!
The US Version instead shows a longer shot of Alf.

Brian: (No!)

Cut to Alf who tries to look innocent.

Alf: (If I'm found guilty, I'll take the month with no TV!)
Katherine: Okay, fine, present your case!
Alf: Now? I need time to prepare!
Katherine: Listen, mister, you are the one who asked for a trial!
Alf: But I need subpoenas and affidavits! And a secretary who could spell those things!
The following sentence by Katherine is shown in both versions, yet they use different takes: We'll have a trial tomorrow morning after breakfast!
