Director's Cut

85:12 / 92:57-93:12

Same scene: Only in the Director's Cut does Stan join in and charm Bruno with a gift of cigars.

Stan: “When you're done with that, try one of these, hand-rolled. Honest stuff. And if you like one, you can have the whole box.”
Bruno: “Thanks, Stan.”
Stan: “Still with the ten-in-one?”

14.2 sec

The way Stan responds to the photo of his “client's” son is initially edited differently and shown with alternative takes for a while.

In the theatrical version, the camera pulls back and Stan says: “He died suddenly. But he wants you to know that he was in no pain.”

In the Director's Cut, there is a long shot and other close-ups. Here, Stan says: “This is a touch indelicate. Pains me to say this.”
Mrs. Kimball: “Mr. Carlisle, please, what is it?”
Stan now involves the husband: "He needs to clear the air, so to speak. He, uh, says that... Charles, you encouraged him to enlist."
Charles Kimball stammers: “I...”

This is followed by alternative takes with the first words, which also appear in the theatrical version and are then continued over an identical shot over the woman's shoulder.

Director's Cut 5 sec longer

Alternative / Additional material in the theatrical version
98:10-98:15 / 106:12-107:56

In the theatrical version, the camera zooms in on Stan a little longer at the end of the scene.

In the Director's Cut, the same comments can be heard in the distance at the beginning, but here the scene is resolved in even greater detail. First, more discussion can be heard quietly and muffledly in the distance about why the lie detector did not register anything with Stan. Grindle talks briefly with Stan and threatens him, but also tears up an arrest warrant issued for Stan in front of his eyes. Here he reveals to Stan that he has his own agenda for him.

Grindle: “You may have fooled everyone else, but you can stop pretending now. 'Cause I think I know what's at work here. This is a warrant for your arrest, signed and sealed by Judge Kimball... at my request. Because now I know that your gift comes from him. He has delivered you to me. Understand? To save me.”
Stan: “Could I have a glass of water, please?”
Grindle snaps his fingers at his assistant.

Director's Cut 98.4 sec (= 1:38 min) longer

The camera movement towards the gate is a little longer and, with a soft cross-fade, you can then see Stan making a drawing of it.

One last chapter card.

13.5 sec

134:06 / 144:30-144:35

Between the shots of the old man on the bed and Stan, the Director's Cut has another short dream sequence in which the old man turns around and now has the same mutated eye as Clem's embryo.

134:24-134:55 / 144:53-144:55
