The 18 Bronzemen

original title: Shao Lin Si shi ba tong ren

Comparison:

  • Recut (HD Version)
  • Reconstructed Original Cut
Release: Apr 13, 2022 - Author: Muck47 - Translator: Muck47 - external link: IMDB
73:36-73:37 / 74:43-76:24

In the recut the sign can be seen a little longer.

The original cut instead has another quiet scene. Shao's condition has worsened. Ling Feng brings him some tea and nurses him. Ling Feng mentions that she has already recognized Shao since he followed his cousin. Shao doesn't think it's so great that she put herself in danger for his sake.

Uncut 99.6 sec (= 1:40 min) longer

Rearranged scene
78:59-79:00 / 81:45-81:56 resp. 83:04-83:05

The recut prefers a view of the sleeping Ling Feng here. This actually comes in the Uncut only one minute later and runs through there in one: How she opens her eyes and hears Shao's fight against the intruder can then be seen again in the recut.

Instead, at this very moment the shot of Shao starts much earlier here in the Uncut and he mumbles something to himself.

Uncut 11 sec longer

Additional scene in recut
81:43-81:45 / 84:41

In the recut, Tang throws more punches earlier at the beginning of the shot.

Very strange that this is missing in the reconstructed uncut version. This part was already noticeable in the comparison with the German DVD, where it was also included. But since this is in HD even in the recut, it doesn't really make sense why it was removed in the reconstructed original cut.

+ 1.7 sec

81:50 / 84:46

This moment is missing in both Blu-ray versions and would come at the timecode 63:19-63:20 of the German DVD: A punch at the beginning of the shot. There is a jump cut here, possibly they wanted to cover it up with the cut.

German DVD 0.5 sec longer

Additional scene in recut
84:47-84:55 / 87:43

When Ta Chi talks about how he swore revenge for his father when he was 5 years old, the recut briefly shows the prince standing in front of miniature bronze men as an insert.

+ 8.1 sec

85:27 / 88:14-88:59

Instead, the original version has another scene with the prince and the bronze men after Ta Chi's death. A servant comes and hands over a scroll, which the prince reads with satisfaction.

45 sec

85:49 / 89:21-89:27

Another shot of two men on horseback coming through the street.

6.3 sec

85:56 / 89:34-89:44

The palanquin is carried through the street in another shot. Then a first zoom on Shao and Ling Feng, followed by another view of the palanquin.

9.2 sec

86:37 / 90:25-90:26

Before the palanquin is attacked, you can still see the fearful double inside.

1.5 sec

87:36 / 91:25-91:55

The prince comments a bit more and in a long shot the fight continues. The prince keeps the upper hand.

30 sec

87:59 / 92:18-92:20

Tang has to defend himself against the prince for a moment longer. Ling Feng rushes to the rescue.

1.6 sec

88:27 / 92:48-92:54

The prince laughs maliciously and makes another comment.

6.1 sec

88:29 / 92:56-92:59

Two more brief shots of Shao and the prince.

2.7 sec

89:04 / 93:33-93:35

Shao poses for a moment longer.

1.4 sec

89:10 / 93:41-94:18

Tang attacks again at the end of the shot. Another long piece of fighting follows, with the doppelganger mixed in as well.

37 sec

89:46 / 94:54-95:20

After the lord throws Tang to the ground, there is again a longer piece missing from the fight, where our two heroes don't make any progress. Ling, meanwhile, takes care of the doppelganger.
As with the previous cut, the recut is then back in the middle of a shot.

25.9 sec

Additional scene in recut
90:00-90:15 / 95:33

Interestingly, the recut builds in a few additional fight moments here, but they are probably not from this film at all.

+ 15.4 sec

90:23 / 95:41

When the prince grabs Tang by the neck, the shot starts a few frames earlier.

0.2 sec

90:24 / 95:42-95:43

Shao's follow-up shot also starts a little earlier.

0.5 sec

90:24 / 95:43-95:44

The fast zoom can be seen three times in a row in the original version. In the recut, quite conventionally, only the last shot of it remains.

0.9 sec

Additional scene in recut
90:24-90:36 / 95:45

After the short last zoom, the recut shows again some fighting on the other meadow, where coincidentally no faces of the main actors can be seen.

+ 11.8 sec

90:37 / 95:45

A loop of Ling Feng's jump was removed.

0.5 sec

90:40 / 95:49-95:53

The next shots are also longer at the end/beginning.

4.8 sec

91:02 / 96:15-96:16

The prince says something else at the end of the shot.

0.8 sec

Additional scene in recut
91:03-91:20 / 96:17

The recut briefly freezes the shot of the sword in the air and shows an old monk in the forest as a flashback.

+ 17.3 sec

91:28 / 96:25

Shao can be seen a moment earlier.

0.6 sec

91:29 / 96:26-96:32

Before Ling Feng starts to attack with the fan, there is a long shot.

5.3 sec

91:38 / 96:41-96:42

Ling Feng runs a little earlier.

1.4 sec

91:44 / 96:48-96:53

She faces the prince a little longer and there is short dialogue.

5.1 sec

91:52 / 97:01-97:10

Shao also makes a longer comment.

8.4 sec

Rearranged scene
92:01-92:05 / 97:19-97:23

The shot of Shao was split down the middle in the recut and brought forward a few seconds as Shao places the dragon's claw on the spear.

No time difference

Alternative
92:09-92:14 / 97:27-97:33

Another close-up of the dragon at the spear is frozen longer in the recut. Actually, Ling Feng tries to attack here for the first time and is pushed back.

Uncut 1.6 sec longer

RecutReconstructed original cut

Additional scene in recut
92:17 / 97:36

When Ling Feng strikes, a flashback to Tang's training is briefly included in the recut, where he also aims for the neck.

+ 0.3 sec

Additional scene in recut
92:19-92:20 / 97:38

We also see a corresponding training flashback before Tang's attack in the genital area.

+ 0.8 sec

93:24 / 98:42-98:47

Ling Feng whines a little longer at the end of the shot.

4.6 sec

94:18 / 99:41-99:42

Another quick shot of Ling Feng.

1.4 sec

94:23 / 99:47-99:48

Tang and Shao can be seen a moment earlier.

0.8 sec

Additional scene in recut
94:29-94:31 / 99:54

In the recut, the last shot of Tang freezes and there is a smooth fade to the following shot.

Recut 1.5 sec longer

Alternative
94:38-95:03 / 100:01-101:00

In the original cut flashbacks to Shao's life in the temple are interspersed here. In between, there are more shots of Shao with Tang on his shoulder. At the end, we see him from close up, and we switch to a very distant shot with a red end fade-in.

In the recut instead, you first see the part where Shao is seen from close up. Then one of the shots from a little further away and from that we fade to another shot of the temple. The end fade-in appears last on a black background.
