Compared are the heavily censored US TV Version and the German TV Version.
The anime series Sailor Moon should ring a bell. The 200 episodes-series about a group of girls, who can perform magic tricks, fighting Evil is a classic which left a mark in the awareness of Japanese Productions (in both directions). No doubt about that. The series was a major success worldwide. But the German Version is quitr a surprise. In comparison to Saber Rider for instance, the German Version are based on the original Japanese master and the effort to keep it as close as possible to the Original was being made. Besides a few modification (please see below), the German Version is equal to the uncensored original Japanese Version.
Unlike the US North American Version.
The company DiC was calling the shots for the adaption of the first two seasons and Cloverway for the following two seasons. The final season 5 has never been released in the US, probably because of the controversial "Sailor Starlights", which also change the gender during their transformations. The realization is legen.... wait for it.... [sorry, wrong franchise -:)] The realization is legendary but it's also a perfect example for heavy censorship in animes these days. Especially season 1, produced by DiC, has a very dreadful rep and is the one with the most censorships being made. "Highlights" are the last two episodes of the first season. The remains of these episodes were put together to one single episode. Really preposterous.
The modifications / censorship
Unfortunately there are some
In the second season, episode 67 was being removed. (Note: The German Vesion lacks episode 89 but it only consists of stock footage and is hated by the fanbase, so it's not a big loss at all.)
It's also worth being mentioned that the German was being modified here and there, too. Zoisite e.g. is a woman as well (I guess the channel changed that) and attempts to avoid words like "kill", "die" etc. were being made, which causes an odd result in some scenes. But still: these modifications are pretty harmless in comparison to the DiC Version. Comparisons of the dialogs with subtitled Japanese episodes proof how close to the Original the German dialogs are.
Only the comparison of the first episode mentions the differences of the opening and final credits, the title of the episodes, the preview of the next episode and the "Sailor Says". All these elements are being ignored in the calculation of the different lengths. Basically, cuts and modifications are the two issues that might have happened. Sometimes it's only of them, sometimes both at the same time. The time index is based on the German Version.
Episode 9: Cruise Blues
Jedite is angry about the Sailor Warriors ruining his plans all the time and making him look bad in front of the queen. The Youma Tethys, who is working directly under Beryl, offers her help... Days later Bunny dreams about a romantic cruise which is being advertised. She tries to win a ticket, but instead Rei wins the last two tickets and takes Ami with her. Bunny is angry, disguises herself and sneaks onto the cruise ship. Strange things are going on and the passenger's energy is being stolen, the ship is a huge trap made by Jedite and Tethys. Together, Moon, Mercury and Mars can destroy Tethys. Jedite is really angry and wants to kill them but is being called back by Beryl, who is not amused about Tethys's death. Now, the only thing Jedite wants is to kill the Sailor Warriors.
Running time of the German episode: 18:24
Running time of the US episode: 17:46
Disregarding newly added scenes, 38 seconds are missing.
The talk between Jedite and Tethys was changed.
In the German Version, Jedite reacts normally to Tethys. It takes him some time to remember her and then only says that she would work directly for Beryl. She makes some advances but he says he had no time for that. Tethys then suggests to help him to get to a lot of energy.
The dialog is very different in the US Version. Jedite is upset about Tethys's appearing and wants her to leave. Tethys literally begs him to let her help, but he just says she should go away. However, when she mentions a big energy source, he gets interested.
[01:07]-[01:10] und [01:14]-[01:18]
Two shots of the cruise ship advertisement are missing. One shot of the passengers and one camera pan from the sky to the bridge and the ship passing under it. Also, in the German Version Tethys is speking whereas Jedite is commenting the advertisement in the US Verison.
The poster can be seen in a close-up and Umino states some facts about the cruise. Then we see Umino's fantasy of him and Bunny on the cruise. However, the fantasy suddenly sops when fantasy-Bunny hits fantasy-Umino.
Umino tries to defend himself by saying that the cruise was until 10 p.m. and that his parents would have never allowed him to go. Bunny and Naru are annoyed and Naru says that Umino has proved again that he just had no clue about anything.
The shot of the skyscraper with the sign saying"Juuban Shopping District" was replaced by a shot of Tokyo with the Tokyo Tower. This is a slight goof as the scene happens in broad daylight while the shot shows dusk.
A shot of one of the flyers advertising was removed due to the Kanji and Katakana.
A strange alteration. Bunny's consolation prize was changed from tissues to soap. Illogical, as it can still be seen that these are just tissues.
Rei concentrates longer on her psy forces in order to cheat in the lottery. Cut to Bunny, who notices that and comments on it.
A poster announcing the first prize was cut out due to the Kanji and Katakana.
The behavior of the girls was changed.
In the original, Bunny wants to talk Rei into taking her on the cruise, but Rei says she had a boyfriend whom she wanted to take with her. Ami approaches but is led away by Rei, who wants to talk to her. Bunny thinks Rei's behavior was strange. Later, Rei wants Ami to go on the cruise with her. Ami hesitates because Bunny wants to go so desperately. However, Rei insists and says she wanted to find a man there. Ami then gives in. Bunny, who has eavesdropped on them, now knows that Rei does not have a boyfriend and says that she would be on board either way.
In the US Version, Bunny and Rei have an argument. Rei quite unfriendly tells Bunny that she would not take her with her and when Bunny asks her whom she would take with her, Rei calls Ami and leads her away. Bunny is angry and calls her a traitor. Rei later says that Bunny was going n her nerves and that she wanted Ami to come with her because this would be a nice cruise. Ami accepts the offer. Bunny, who has eavesdropped on them, says that the last word has not been spoken yet.
Jedite's chat with the disguised Bunny was changed quite a bit. In the German Version he acts like a real captain, very polite but also distant. In the US Version, however, he shows a lot mroe interest in Bunny and even tries to chat up on her.
In the meantime, Rei is explaining her new strategy to ami. In the original she wants to look for men who have recently split up in order to serve as a replacement. In the US Version she wants to look out for goodlooking crew members.
The scene's joke was ruined.
In the German Version Sailor tells Mercury that they should get her. Mars also joins in and says that she wanted to make up for Jedite and Tethys insulting her for coming without a boyfriend. In the US Version Mars only says that they had to help Sailor Moon because the monster was too powerful. This does not really make sense, because the thought bubble with Kedite and Tethys can still be seen.
The final joke was changed.
In the German Version Bunny says the cruise had been a failure. Rei says that she would have a romantic cruise with her boyfriend one day. Bunny says the same, upon which Rei comments that she would never get one anyway. An argument unfolds, Luna is desperate because of their childish behaviour while Ami prefers reading a book.
In the US Version, Bunny is complaining about the failure. Rei says that she would take Tuxedo Mask with her for the next cruise. Bunny does not like this at all and the two start arguing. Luna asks herself when they would finallly stop arguing and Ami remarks that she would have to wait quite a long time for that.
