The shorter export version (Warner Home Video - European DVD) was compared with the uncut US version (Amazon Prime Video - USA).
Uprising tells the story of the Jewish resistance in the Warsaw Ghetto (April 1943), centered around the figures of Mordechaj Anielewicz, Tosia Altman, Katzik (Simcha) Rotem and Jitzhak Zuckerman. The film was commissioned by the American television network NBC and broadcast as a two-part movie on November 4 and 5, 2001. Director Jon Avnet (Fried Green Tomatoes) made the film with Hank Azaria, Leelee Sobieski, David Schwimmer, Donald Sutherland and Jon Voight, among others. Even though the approximately three-hour running time naturally includes some dialogue-heavy moments, the film scores across the board with authentic sets and powerfully choreographed battles. Tanks roll, Molotov cocktails set soldiers on fire, bullets fly erratically over the burning ghetto, and bombs collapse entire buildings. In this respect, the TV adaptation with the smaller budget can easily keep up with the Hollywood competition. The film is definitely recommended for those interested in the subject.
The differences between the export and US versionsJust one month after the TV broadcast, the 178-minute version was released on VHS and DVD in the US. Apparently it was profitable enough for the US market to press the two individual episodes on a double disc, but Warner decided to create a shorter version for other countries. So the film was trimmed by about 18 minutes and was released in 2002 in several European countries by Warner-Bros. on VHS and DVD. The scissors were used 44 times, and for the most part removed plot elements that are not essential to the film, but nevertheless often take moments that serve to make the plot more comprehensible. So you sometimes wonder why these bits were cut. For example, in the US version, Tosia is introduced to Arie and you learn that he also belongs to the resistance. In the export version, he is suddenly there without further explanation. The character Calel also receives more exposure, which better explains why he joins the group. In the export version, he remains somewhat ominous for longer – leading to the question of whether he might have only infiltrated as a Nazi spy. But violent content has also been removed in the course of the cuts. Here and there a few bullet wounds, or German atrocities against civilians. But also moments when the Jewish resistance movement becomes a little more ruthless, were apparently "too much" for the countries outside America. Also rather unusual for a US TV movie, there is an additional / more explicit shot of Mordechai becoming intimate with Mira. But in the end, nothing to get excited about and the export version also offers plenty of gun fights with wounded soldiers and the well-known stomach-churning war atrocities. Since these were always longer sections that were taken out, there are at least no abrupt cuts to disrupt the mood. This was partly achieved by re-ordering some scenes, with snippets of dialogue from the removed material (off-screen) being superimposed on other image material to reintegrate missing information from the abbreviated plot passages. The US version, of course, offers the full story construct and the scenes removed from the export version don't really drag the movie out unnecessarily. The US version is therefore of course the “more complete” (and uncut in violence) choice and definitely to be preferred.
The times at a glance:A small note: in purely mathematical terms, the VOD version is still about 3 ½ minutes short of the US VHS and DVD. In fact, however, there is nothing missing that you would miss. A comparison showed that the 178-minute version [NTSC] still has twelve 10-second black screens as advertising substitutes (almost every 10-15 minutes). In addition, the 80-second credits also appear at the end of the first episode.

The black screen until the first text appears is slightly longer in the US version. US version: 1 sec / [0.9 sec in PAL] Re-ordered scene [00:03:44 - 00:03:52] [00:03:54 - 00:04:11] The way the soldier delivers another blow to the man's face and the inserted intermediate cuts to Tosia and the man, who apparently turns to Tosia with his bloody nose, were arranged differently. In the US version, you see a little more of the soldier before he bends down to strike and a little more of the downcast man. There is also an additional shot of Tosia. Export version: 6.7 sec US version: 13 sec (= + 6.3 sec) / [12.5 sec in PAL] (= + 5.8 sec)
[00:05:04] [00:05:26 - 00:05:49] The shot continues for a moment on the busy sidewalk, then we see Mordechai being grabbed by the arm and stopped by a German soldier passing by. The soldier orders him to take off his hat. Mordechai reacts precociously, whereupon the soldier repeats his demand more firmly. Mordechai calmly chews on an apple while Yitzhak appears tense. Then the soldier is distracted by the noise on the street. Both versions then show a shot of the street, where a raid begins. US version: 23.4 sec / [22.5 sec in PAL]
[00:05:06] [00:05:52 - 00:06:17] First the soldier looks smug, then he disappears. Yitzhak asks Mordechai what his problem is. He replies that he will not take off his hat for anyone but himself. They both look at each other briefly and then decide to take off their hats after all. The raid on the street becomes more violent before Yitzhak asks what they should do now. US version: 25.2 sec / [24.1 sec in PAL]
[00:05:17] [00:06:28 - 00:06:30] When Yitzhak sees the old lady, she appears again, asking him to let her grandson David go. US version: 2.6 sec / [2.5 sec in PAL]
Audio change [00:07:57] [00:09:18 - 00:09:54] Before going from the exterior view of the barn to the interior, more material was cut from how the student Julian Mordechai asks about the rumors that they will all flee to Palestine via Romania very soon. Mordechai replies flippantly that he knows nothing about it and will first investigate these rumors. Then he appoints Julian as his substitute teacher for the day. Due to the cuts, Mordechai's sentence – that he has to go somewhere else quickly, but hopes to be back soon – was also added to the export version and thus placed over the exterior view of the barn. US version: 35.7 sec / [34.4 sec in PAL]
[00:11:33] [00:13:39 - 00:13:48] The mounted men surround Mordechai for a while, then a distant voice speaks, ironically welcoming him to their country. Mordechai sees a man standing on a hill. US version: 9 sec / [8.6 sec in PAL]
[00:17:50] [00:20:22 - 00:20:58] After Calel has handed the ring over to Captain Szerynskio, we see Tosia trying to cross the border again. However, she is intercepted by Calel. He asks what she is doing, since she does not belong in the ghetto as a non-Jew. She shows him her discarded armband and asks if he can help her get into German territory. He says he could do that, but it would get him into a lot of trouble. US version: 35.2 sec / [33.7 sec in PAL]
[00:24:08] [00:27:31 - 00:28:46] After Tosia has bought the bread from the boy: Mordechai, who has fled, makes it back to Mira and surprises her at night. She asks if he is all right and although he shows pain, he says that he is fine. Then he asks about his sister. Mira asks him again about his condition. He replies that they will just stay here and fight if they can't become farmers.
Change of scene: Mordechai and his sister are walking along the street at night when a man taps Mordechai on the shoulder from behind. Quick-witted, he points a pistol at the man, who turns out to be Kazik. Mordechai asks him why he wants to join the resistance, to which he replies that he can't think of a better way to meet women.
US version: 74.9 sec / [71.8 sec in PAL] Audio change [00:25:27 - 00:25:37] [00:30:09 - 00:30:19] While Mordechai and Kazik are checking out the situation, the following dialog is inserted in the export version to explain why Kazik wants to join the resistance. In the US version, only background noise and a German can be heard, who wants the workers to line up again. No difference
[00:30:18] [00:35:12 - 00:35:31] When Mordechai sends his sister to the class, the shot with him continues. He gets up and walks slightly into the hallway to take a look into the classroom. Then he sees Tosia sitting on a bench with a toddler. However, he does not pay any further attention to it. US version: 18.9 sec / [18 sec in PAL]
[00:30:21] [00:35:34 - 00:35:56] Dr. Korczak, who is leaving the classroom, first comes to Mordechai. He asks if the doctor has succeeded in getting Adam Czerniakow to help. The doctor says no, but then suggests to Mordechai that he come along next Thursday during a musical performance to try again with Czerniakow himself. Mordechai nods in agreement and then leaves the doctor. As he walks away, he glances back at Tosia. US version: 21.8 sec / [20.9 sec in PAL]
[00:31:24] [00:37:02 - 00:37:27] After Captain Szerynskios has introduced his daughter Inga to Celal, the shot continues: After a brief exchange of small talk, Celal notices the ring on her finger and asks how long she has been wearing it. She replies, “Not long, just since my birthday.” Celal then asks if her father gave her the ring, to which she replies in the affirmative. He is annoyed, but still maintains his composure. US version: 25.5 sec / [24.4 sec in PAL]
[00:56:51] [01:03:59 - 01:05:46] When Tosia is sent on her mission and is supposed to hide the card in her shoe, we see Tosia doing so in her room. Her roommate comes into the room and asks Tosia if she knows what day it is. Tosia doesn't. It could be Friday, the woman assumes and briefly indulges in memories of previous Fridays. Both then lie down to sleep. But the woman then asks again for her name. Tosia answers the question and asks the woman in turn. She calls herself Frania. They wish each other a good night and as they lie still, Frania begins to sing a song.
Frania's singsong continues to be heard, while we see Tosia in the daytime on the street, joining a line of Jews being escorted.
US version: 107.4 sec / [103 sec in PAL] [01:01:23] [01:10:30 - 01:10:53] While Tosia is on the truck, she pats the man (Aria) on the shoulder and asks how close they are to finishing. Just a few blocks, he says, and then he tells her that she was lucky to get out of the foreman's office. Most people don't make it. Tosia thinks about this for a moment before noticing her tattered armband, as seen in the export version. US version: 23.7 sec / [22.8 sec in PAL]
[01:02:39] [01:12:13 - 01:12:41] When Tosia and Kazik enter the building, he first leads her down a staircase to a room where two men are waiting. Kazik then introduces her to Michael Klepfisch and Arie Wilner. As they shake hands, Arie and Tosia both remark that they have already met. Kazik says that she should get to know the two men well. US version: 28.1 sec / [26.9 sec in PAL]
[01:05:38] [01:15:48 - 01:16:04] As Tosia climbs through the barbed wire, she first looks back and forth before the boy with the pole offers his help. A handful of German soldiers are on a routine inspection. US version: 15.6 sec / [14.9 sec in PAL]
[01:05:53] [01:16:19 - 01:16:26] She slides down the pole a little longer and then thanks the boy. He just says that they have to hurry. US version: 6,7 sec / [6,4 sec in PAL]
Re-ordered scene
[01:07:41] [01:18:56] The introductory scene with Himmler and Krüger in the car has been moved to the beginning. Colonel Von Sammern proudly reports that the number of Jews in the ghetto is now only 30-40,000. Himmler is nevertheless disappointed.
Re-ordered scenes / audio change [01:08:05 - 01:08:08] [01:19:20 - 01:19:31] The two versions differ as the general is still pointing at the passersby and calling them the guilty assassins. The export version inserts a shot of Hippler and his cameraman. In the off, Himmler's question to the colonel (which can be seen in the following scenes of the US version with footage) and his answer were placed under this footage. Himmler asks if they agree on this problem and Von Sammern answers curtly with: “Absolutely.”
US version: First, the camera pans wildly from the woman walking on the street to the other side of the street, capturing another passerby. Then we see Himmler in the car asking his question of the colonel. He wants to know if they are in agreement. Furthermore, he says that he wants to be able to rely on him to really liberate Warsaw from these vermin. The colonel answers with a smile: “Absolutely.”
Export version: 3.5 sec US version: 11.1 sec (= + 7.6 sec) / [10.6 sec in PAL] (= + 7.1 sec) (What is interesting about this re-ordered scene is that in the export version, it appears as if Hippler overheard the conversation and reacted to it. [01:08:05] [01:18:45 - 01:18:56] In the US version, the shot of Hippler and his cameraman was shown earlier and was used as an introduction to Himmler and Krüger. In this version, the shot is also slightly longer and displays an accompanying text explaining that Reichsführer Heinrich Himmler and General Krüger are inspecting the ghetto. US version: 11.3 sec / [10.8 sec in PAL]
Re-ordered scenes [01:08:08 - 01:08:33] [01:18:48] Also, Kazik's inquiry to Mordechai about the new female member (Devorah) of the resistance was moved to the end in the export version. No difference

[01:13:51] [01:25:06] - Broadcast as a multi-part series on US television, the credits are shown again at the beginning of the second part. No difference
[01:15:30] [01:26:49 - 01:27:20] The soldier asks Kazik to open the box. He is a bit clumsy at first, but then he opens it. When the soldier recognizes / smells the male corpse inside, he turns away in disgust and now wants the box to disappear immediately. US version: 30.3 sec / [29 sec in PAL]
[01:15:56] [01:27:47 - 01:28:10] The scene with Yitzhak and Kazik at the cemetery continues in the US version. Kazik announces his latest mission: to try to confuse the Fuhrer. He looks at Devorah, who glares as she notices how she is being looked at. Yitzhak then says dryly that “attempt” is the right word for it. After that, there is a scene change to children playing soccer before we see the men digging in the tunnel. US version: 23.4 sec / [22.4 sec in PAL]
[01:16:39] [01:28:55 - 01:28:58] After the montage, we see Kazik playing ball with the children. US version: 3.6 sec / [3.4 sec in PAL]
[01:18:59] [01:31:24 - 01:32:03] Frania kisses Julian goodbye. Mordechai wishes Yitzhak good luck and Zivia watches him march down the street. Then we see how Calel and Kazik (dressed as an SS officer) buy Arie's freedom again. Calel is shaking so hard that Kazik has to take the money out of his hand to hand it over to the Gestapo man. US version: 38.4 sec / [36.8 sec in PAL]
[01:26:30] [01:39:53 - 01:40:08] The attack with the gun continues for a little longer. Followed by intermediate cuts to Hippler, Major General Stroop and Mordechai. US version: 14.9 sec / [14.3 sec in PAL]
[01:28:53] [01:42:37 - 01:42:52] Kazik is still looking out the window tensely after Stroop had his table placed. He asks a comrade how he manages to just be able to sleep and goes to Devorah. Stroop looks around the corner again and sees the hoisted flags. US version: 15 sec / [14.4 sec in PAL]
[01:31:06] [01:45:11 - 01:45:22] During the attack, more Molotov cocktails are thrown out of the windows at the soldiers. US version: 10.9 sec / [10.4 sec in PAL]
[01:40:17] [01:54:56 - 01:55:14] While Tosia is sitting in the church, there is a short segment in the US version in which German soldiers capture some resistance fighters. However, a woman draws a hidden pistol and shoots two soldiers before fleeing. She is shot twice in the back and falls to the ground dead. Stroop then orders all women to be stripped immediately so as not to repeat this mistake. US version: 17.2 sec / [17 sec in PAL]
[01:41:50] [01:56:51 - 01:56:55] When Calel decides to sacrifice himself, the US version shows an additional cutaway shot (accompanied by the church choir) of several burning Jews jumping to their deaths from a building. US version: 4 sec / [3.8 sec in PAL]
[01:50:15] [02:05:42 - 02:06:10] After Krüger's announcement to Stroop: Yitzhak returns to Frania. The Poles don't want to give them weapons. He asks her if she had more luck. She says no. Then he asks if she has heard from Tosia, but she shakes her head. US version: 28.9 sec / [27.7 sec in PAL]
[01:52:48] [02:08:50 - 02:09:02] Before Mordechai sends Kazik on his new mission, we see a rabbi saying a prayer and Mordechai receiving another comrade. US version: 12.4 sec / [11.9 sec in PAL]
[01:54:04] [02:10:22 - 02:10:36] Before Kazik climbs the ladder further up, he pauses briefly, slides back down again and kisses Devorah. Then he climbs the ladder again and the export version continues from there. US version: 14.1 sec / [13.6 sec in PAL]
Audio change [01:59:23] [02:16:09 - 02:16:29] When Kazik arrives at the bottom of the sewer, the sewer worker tells him to follow him. In the export version, this sentence was superimposed over the image of Kazik shining his light on a wrapped corpse. However, the U.S. version continues for a moment longer, with Kazik saying “Charming” upon seeing his find. Only then does the sewer worker tell Kazik to follow him. The camera then pans back to the corpse. This is followed by an additional scene with Tosia and Arie: She is lying in his arms and wishes they had more weapons and ammunition. This thought makes them both smile. US version: 20.4 sec / [19.6 sec in PAL]
Audio change [02:01:09 - 02:01:13] [02:18:20 - 02:18:48] Mordechai and Mira become intimate. In the export version, only they are shown. You can hear their kisses and light music. (The US version also uses music, but only over a shot that is exclusive to the US.)
During the shots in which Mordechai and Mira become intimate, the US version shows Hippler in further conversation with Stroop. The lovers' dialogue continues even after they are no longer visible. Stroop asks Hippler what makes the Jews in the ghetto such fierce fighters. “Despair,” answers Hippler. The Major General recalls an earlier incident with a woman he had murdered, who had cursed him in a language he did not understand before she died. Hippler then says that she might have been a witch. Mira is seen again and how she groans as Mordechai apparently penetrates her. Stroop raises his glass: “May we only be cursed well.”
Export version: 8.4 sec US version: 33.6 sec (= + 25.2 sec) / [32.2 sec in PAL] (= + 23.8 sec) [02:13:07] [02:31:12 - 02:31:35] When Tosia finds Kazik and asks how he got into the ghetto, he tells her: through the sewers. She instructs him to get her out of the ghetto. At first he refuses and wants to stay. She becomes more forceful and pulls him to his feet to set off. US version: 22.1 sec / [21.2 sec in PAL]
[02:13:40] [02:32:10 - 02:32:33] Another woman's body is floating in the water inside the sewer system, then Kazik and Tosia come down the ladder. US version: 23.4 sec / [22.5 sec in PAL]
[02:16:06] [02:35:05 - 02:35:16] After the split squad has found itself in the sewer system, Tosia tells them all to follow quickly and quietly. Then they all start moving again. US version: 11.6 sec / [11.1 sec in PAL]

[02:21:30] [02:41:35 - 02:41:40] Yitzhak's call starts earlier. He confirms that it is an office and gives the address before the export version reconnects during the rest of the call. US version: 5.2 sec / [5 sec in PAL]
