Comparison between the TV Version (taken from the Blu-ray) and the Extended Version (taken from the British DVD)
- 13 alterations, 5 of those including alternative footage
- Difference in running time: 127.9 sec (= 2:08 min)
Almost every episode of this sitcom classic was released in an extended version on the US DVDs. For TV some cuts were done in order to trim the episodes to the usual format, however, some censoring can be found as well. In Great Britain, only the TV versions were released on DVD at first yet the newer "15th Anniversary Edition" contains the extended episodes as well and was used as a comparison here.
The new Blu-ray release is identical all around the world and contains – only the TV Versions, the extensions can also not be found in the bonus material. People interested in buying the series now have to decide: Longer episodes or better picture quality? The latter is really great on Blu-ray, rescanning of the original 35mm tape led to a brilliant picture and it is now also in the 16:9 format with more information on the side of the picture. On the other hand, about 2 minutes are missing per episode.
The here compared episode 1x14 ("The One With the Candy Hearts") contains about 2 minutes of additional footage. Especially the scene with the fire fighters in the apartment of Monica and Rachel is considerably longer. Apart from this, there are some short little extensions to be seen every now and then. It's a pity that the one with Janice in the hallway didn't make it into the TV version.
Only the TV version has a short black screen right after the opening credits.
+ 0.4 sec
The dialogue is a little bit longer in the extended version. The part in bold type is exclusive; the following one in italics is shown in an alternative take (i.e. the EV shows Phoebe in one take). Phoebe just repeats what she had said.
(Phoebe: "Oh! You know my friend Abby who shaves her head?"
Phoebe: "Well, I have this friend, Abby, who shaves her head. She said that if you want to break the bad boyfriend cycle, you can do like a cleansing ritual."
Extended Version 4.3 sec longer
The scene in the hallway is longer.
Janice turns aside with the phone, whereupon Joey, Rachel and Monica immediately begin gesticulating and they ask Chandler how he could end up in bed with Janice again. He "answers" by forming a gun with his fingers and putting it to his head - at that moment, Janice turns around again on which he changes to an affirmative gesture. Janice turns away once more and he finally shoots himself with the imaginary gun.
The shot after Ross' embarrassing story is a bit longer and Ross tries to change the topic; Kristin agrees with him.
Ross: "You know, they... they should be cooking the food soon."
Kristin: "Oh, good!"
Again just a short extension of the scene at this point: they throw more stuff into the fire, including a credit card.
Monica: "Oh, wait. Who's MCI card is that?"
Phoebe tries to read the number, but in vain: "Mine! Oh, Shoot! Ok, remember this number, 9-7-4-3... Oh. Oh, well."
The sideways shot is longer in the extended version; the camera closes in on Ross and Kristin. He makes a face (because of the hot piece of meat) before he asks: "So, are... So, are you actually from New York?"
Kristin: "No. Not originally. I am from..."
The TV version briefly cuts to Carol and Susan and then Ross says without hesitation in an alternative shot: "So, um, what do you do for a living?"
Kristin: "Well, um, for the past few years I've been..."
In both versions, she's interrupted by Susan's beeper and a part of the following shot is in sync.
Extended Version 7.2 sec longer
The discussion between Carol and Susan was shortened a bit; there's a cut to Ross and Kristin in the TV version. The silence between the identical sentences is longer in the extended version.
Susan: "(I thought they could.) The maxipads were a piece of cake. You'd think the mini-pads would be that much easier."
Carol: ("But it's Valentine's Day.")
Susan: "I know. (I know. But it's my job. Look, I'll try to get back as soon as I can.)
Extended Version 6.6 sec longer
The extended version begins earlier in the apartment at this point; more dialogue with the firefighters.
Rachel: "Thank you guys for coming over."
Fireman No. 1: "Not at all. That's pretty much our job."
Fireman No. 2: "That's why we got the cool hats."
The TV Version shows the following shot a little bit earlier.
Extended Version 6.5 sec longer
Monica tries to talk her way out of this a little bit longer: "Well, you see, I was taking out the trash and Phoebe was lighting incense..."
The scene is longer at the end in the extended version. The firefighters give some advice.
Fireman No. 1: "Look, ladies, in the future when you're burning your ex-boyfriends' stuff... Number one: Make sure you are in a well-ventilated area. Number Two: If you are going to be burning his clothing, you're going to want to stay away from your synthetic fabrics."
Fireman No. 2: "Number Three: Try to let go of the anger, and learn to love yourself."
In exchange, the previous shot is slightly longer in the TV version (no pictures and not counted as alternative footage).
Extended Version 19.1 sec longer
Janice adds: "And then you push me away, you pull me back."
Again in the foghorn voice: "Jaaa-nice."
She says the line "You want me, you need me" in alternative shots (the EV shows her in just one shot).
Extended Version 4.5 sec longer
Ross is beating around the bush a little bit longer: "(Besides,) I've got a ring at home that fits you. Uh...I've got, uh, lots of pictures with both of us in them. Okay? And-and, best of all...hey-hey (you're carrying my baby.)"
The following shot begins slightly earlier in the TV version (no pictures and not counted as alternative footage).
Extended Version 11.1 sec longer
The last scene also begins earlier, so the girls can be seen asking the firefighters for a date before they leave.
Rachel: "So, you guys really just slide down the pole, huh?"
Fireman No. 2: "Absolutely."
Phoebe: "That's so cool. And how do you get back up?"
Fireman No. 1: "Well, we rarely have to return from a fire as quickly."
Monica: "Um, so, uh, woud you guys, uh... Well would you like to, uh... sometime maybe, uh, maybe you'd like to..."
Rachel: "...go for a drink sometime."
Fireman No. 2: "Yeah. Sure a drink sounds good. Yeah we have to go now."
