Comparison between the censored Blu-ray from Taiwan and the uncensored international Blu-ray by 20th Century Fox.

- One censored scene
- No time difference

Alejandro G. Iñárritu's thriller The Revenant starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Tom Hardy was released with an R rating in the US in its uncensored form. Here, as well as generally on most releases worldwide, the film is in wide 2.40:1 aspect ratio. Curiously, however, a Blu-ray in 1.78:1 (i.e. full 16:9 image) was released in Taiwan. The film is open matte here, and thus there is more image information to be discovered at the top and bottom. Especially with the many epic shots, for which Emmanuel Lubezki was also awarded the "Best Cinematography" Oscar, this is often quite an added value - although 2.40:1 should be the director's preferred aspect ratio here. Thus, for some prospective buyers, this is a worthwhile import option.

However, there are three major drawbacks. On the one hand, the audio is only in 5.1, while the international Blu-rays also have a massive 7.1 mix on board. On the other hand, English subtitles are missing for parts with Indian/French dialogue. And last but not least, which is also the main reason for this report: a short scene was visually censored. The genital area of a man, which can only be seen hinted at in the background, has been blurred for the Asian mark. An intervention that can be forgiven by all means, especially since any other violent peaks, the rape or even the naked male butt of a corpse shortly afterwards remained untouched.

Runtimes are ordered as follows: Taiwanese Blu-ray / German Blu-ray

The international Blu-rays should still have the 20th Century Fox logo at the beginning. At least with the present Blu-ray from Germany this is the case.

There is a pan over to the naked man staggering forward with an arrow in his back, slowly falling to the ground. As this happens, the Taiwanese Blu-ray briefly has a blur effect.
Since this is hard to see with our usual screenshot size, here's the relevant part in zoom again as a second.

Here are a few more comparison images across the film, illustrating the advantage of the Taiwanese Blu-ray above and below. However, sometimes the image detail deviates a bit and the sides are still missing a bit.
