Comparison:

  • UK Special Edition (Universal)
  • Uncut UK Version
Release: Feb 02, 2011 - Author: Scat - Translator: Tony Montana - external link: IMDB
In the German Version, a short plot scene was missing all the years. Only the recent releases on Blu-ray and HD DVD plus a broadcast in the German Free TV (ARTE) contain the Uncut Version.

A DVD release by Universal Pictures in UK is based on the German Version, that's why that scene is missing on that DVD as well. The reason for that is crystal clear: Universal wanted to save money and released the DVD in Germany and in UK to reduce production costs. We're only talking about the first release of the 2 Disc Special Edition here. Any other releases in UK (VHS, DVD, BD, HD DVD) are uncut. There also exists a re-release of the 2 disc special edition which has the same cover artwork as the first edition but is uncut.

Compared are the shortened UK 2 Disc Special Edition by Universal and the Uncut UK Version.

The beginning of the shot is still in it. Then a cut to David, who tries to cut his wrist. The phone conversation in between is missing (the camera pans slowly to the phone booth with David in it):

"Yes, operator, I'd like to call the United States and reserve the charges."
...
"David Kessler for anyone."
...
"Thank you. I'll wait."
...
"Hello? It's area code 516 472 3402."
...
"402."
...
"Thank you."
...
"Hello, Rachel? Just say yes you'll accept the charges."
...
"Say yes, Rachel."
...
"Hi. Is Mom or Dad at home?"
...
"Well, where are they?"
...
"Well, where's Max?"
...
"You're all alone?"
...
"Mom and Dad would never leave me alone when I was ten."
...
"No, not ten and a half, either."
...
"I'm still in London."
...
"Yes, I'm all better now."
...
"Listen, Rachel. ... Tell Mom and Dad that I love them, okay?"
...
"Just do it for me will ya, please?"
...
"And, uh, ...don't fight with Max."
...
"Well, try."
...
"And please don't forget what I told ya about Mom and Dad."
...
"That I love them."
...
"And I love Max, and I love you too."
...
"No, I do."
...
"No, I'm not being silly ya little creep. ... You promise?"
...
"OK."
...
"You be a good girl, then."
...
"Yeah, I love you."
...
"Goodbye."

David hangs up and gets out pocket knife. David is shown via close-ups all the time so far. The versions are in synch at the end of the shot.
