Alternative / Additional material in the recut version
67:52-67:56 / 69:41-69:45

After his outburst, Charles sees the wreath on the door from the first murder again in the original version, and then the shot of the approaching police car begins a little earlier. In the recut, however, you see his mother and then a drive towards the wreath.

No time difference

RecutOriginal version

At 68:40 / 70:29, a sentence (in response to “Who the hell knows why he tried to escape?”) was re-recorded differently, significantly changing the meaning.

Original version: “Let's just see that it doesn't happen again. I'm going to grant the motion.”
Recut: "Al's right. It's not probative. I'm going to grant the motion."

Between this and the next deviation, there was an alternative scene on VHS/LaserDisc (during Anthony's comparison to Nazis and Jews) in which Charles looks at the stenographer's legs. See the other report for a more detailed description. The original version shows conventional shots of Anthony and Dr. Keddie as a replacement, just like the recut, and the dialogue is exactly the same.

71:42-71:46 / 73:31-73:57

More discussion after “His actions were inevitable?” at the end of a shot in the original version.
Dr. Keddie: “Some would label it that way, yes.”
Anthony: “My question to you is, were you trying to mislead the jury by suggesting the defendant bore no responsibility for his actions?”
Al: “Objection, your Honor. This is argumentative!”
Judge McKinsey: “Go ahead, Dr. Keddie.”
Dr. Keddie: “I was not trying to mislead, sir. The notion of free will in Mr. Reece's case is an illusion. His behavior was conditioned by forces beyond his control.”

Instead, the recut has a cross-cut to Charles for the transition and jumps straight to the statement “His behavior was conditioned by forces beyond his control.”

Anthony adds critically to the jury: "Now, I want you to remember that you sit here as representatives of your community. You represent your neighbors, your friends, your children. If you should decide to let this man go free, be absolutely clear in your mind that you are condemning his victims to a second death and saying to your neighbors that the life of a terrible murderer is worth more than the life of the people he killed. Thank you."

In the original version, the stamp is shown several times and the judge finishes reading the verdict. Note: At this point in the real original version on VHS, there was a tearful statement from Anthony himself, see separate report. Then there is a scene outside where Anthony and Kate meet at the harbor. She hesitantly says that she wants to break up with him permanently. Anthony insists that he loves her and needs her now. She should just hang in there a little longer.

In the Recut, instead, we see the judge for the first time and slightly different shots of the stamp. Now we also see the shot where Charles seeks advice from Al.
Here we hear this comment: “It isn't over yet. This is only the first part of the trial. We still have a shot to save your life. We can still show the jury that you aren't responsible.”

Original version 70.5 sec (= 1:11 min) longer

The doctor's comments from 83:02 / 87:17 differ or have been re-recorded. The content is basically similar, only the wording differs. In the recut, after “Just a few samples,” he adds, “It's nothing to worry about,” while in the original version, he ends with “No, Charles, we're just trying to help you.”

In the original version, Anthony is seen flying through the area and speaking into his tape recorder again: "Memo to Spencer Whalen, District Attorney, Stockton County, regarding the Reece trial. After I saw the Ellis house and the Tippett's house, I wanted Reece to be legally sane. I came to feel that he understood each atrocity that he had committed. I agreed with you that we owed something to the legal system, to the victims, so I set myself up as the avenger of suffering."

In the recut, there is instead only one shot of Anthony and one of Charles lying on his bed.

Recut
84:47 and 84:58-85:15 / 89:36-89:57

The scene in which Anthony walks pensively through a dark office has been moved back a little in the recut and is slightly shortened at the end. More importantly, however, the voice-over commentary is completely different.

In the original theatrical version, Anthony says: “I can't believe in good conscience either of us wanna put Charles Reece to death. I managed to sell it to the jury, to myself. Now, I'm not sold. Delete. After the PET scan, I'm just not sold.”

In the Recut, a jury member says: “Your Honor, based on the new scientific evidence, we, the jury, find that the defendant should go to a state mental hospital.”

Original version 4 sec longer

85:15 / 90:08-91:18

After Al bends down to Charles' cell, the original resolution of the scene is completely missing in the recut: Charles is lying there dead and they open the door.
Scene change to Anthony, who speaks into the tape recorder: "I don't believe execution is the answer. I don't know what the answer is. I'm going to talk to Judge McKinsey about this, but I won't do that until you and I have had a chance to talk. I don't want to kill this man."
Back at the prison, Charles' death is confirmed and pills are found in a hole in the mattress. It is noted that his mother visited him yesterday. Al says frustratedly: “Look, he thought he was butchering people and animals to get blood, so he could cure his imaginary illness. Why would he kill himself?”

85:34 / 91:34-91:48

Once again, a brief flashback of the little girl (Anthony's daughter) on the carousel. Then Anthony again, accompanied by Kate's voiceover: “Tony, you have a chance and a responsibility to say it's wrong to kill.”

86:46-88:06 or 91:20 / 93:12-93:18 or 95:50

In the original version, Gene and Andrew are only seen walking away from above, and then the credits roll.

The recut switches back to Charles in prison. He writes a letter to Gene in which he questions the murders of his wife and daughter. Charles asks Gene to come visit him. This is followed by two text inserts reporting on Charles' upcoming hearing for possible release. Finally, there are longer credits on a black background.
