Comparison between the Italian version and the US version.
 About the movie
After having crossed the alps Hannibal is nearing Roma which can not stand the mighty commander. Strategically overpowered he also manages to seduce Sylvia, the niece of Roman senator Fabius Maximus. With him Hannibal encounters a fierce enemy... Average peplum movie with Victor Mature as Hannibal. Terence Hill and Bud Spencer are als starring in a minor part. The German DVD (equal to the Italian version) tries to mislead the customer as it shows both on the front cover. But actually they appear just rarely. Versions Hannibal can be obtained in 2 completely different versions. Firstly an Italian version with a runtime of 91 minutes as well as an US version with 100 minutes. Both versions offer different material. There are alternative takes, small intercuts, scene changes as well as cuttings. Interesstingly both versions show different directors during the intro. The US version is endowed with pletny of scenes which do not really fit into the context. There are diverse new fighting scenes or scenes with soldiers who act in front of a background which does not fit in the actual context and seem to have been shot in a studio. Aditionally some scenes containing violence have been made. So, which version is better? Definately hard to say. Generally I would advice the Italian version. The new pick-up shots do not bring something new and only stretch the runtime. However, it is interessting that there are some (small) content scenes which are only available in the US version. [00:00:00][00:00:00] The US tape starts with credits. Afterwards one can see scenes of the horseman, a moderator explains the situation. One can see a model of Roma and the scene in which one can see the senat starts earlier.
The Italian version starts directly with the scenes of the horseman which are layed above the credits. The scenes have been enlarged and partly defered.
In the end of the senator meeting Fabius can be seen in the US tape and says that Roma’s destiny lay upon the hands of its enemies. Afterwards there is a camera panning over the mountains and a sheep herd. US: 5:18 Min. ITALIAN VERSION: 4:23 Min. March over the Alps [00:05:18][00:04:23] The march over the Alps has been enlarged in the US version. There are plenty new scenes which try to focus on the soldiers. Mainly they consist of soldiers who are fighting through the snow as well as scenes with violence. For example one can explicitly see how some soldiers fall into the gulch and are eaten bei wolves. It is quiet obvious that different material has been used. These new scenes do not fit into the rest of the scenes with the elephants.
The Italian version offers a scene in which some elephants break out. Hannibal helps his brother and prevents him from something more serious (this scenes comes a bit later in the US version). The US version lacks these scenes but offers sequences of the soldiers how they are walking through the forrest.
After Hannibal was explained they have reached Italia the US version shows some additional scenes. The men are resting and a dialogue between Hannibal and his brother can be seen. The brother adds that is seems to be a miracle to have crossed the Alps in 15 days. Hannibal says that they have lost many people and hopes to have act in the will of gods. Later the soldiers move on.

The Italian version shows a new scene in which Sylvia talks to a servant about Hannibal.

At the battlefield [00:38:58][00:30:03] The US version offers a fighting scene in which the Romans are defeated by Hannibal’s elephants. After Hannibal’s dialogue one can see the battle’s effects. The fight is missing in the Italian version but one can instantly see the battle effetcs (dead horseman, bodies in the river). After a dialogue with Hannibal the Italian version shows a new but short fighting scene where the Romans strike back.
US: 3:59 Min. ITALIAN VERSION: 2:01 Min. Hannibal’s eye complaint & senators meeting [00:42:57][00:32:04] The US version shows a doctor who puts a sword into fire which shall suggest that Hannibal’s eyes are going to be removed.
Interessting difference: In the Italian version this scene is missing. In the end Hannibal removes his eye patch and scratches his eye. Afterwards one can see some soldiers walking around.
In the Italian version the senators meeting offers more dialogues. They are talking about to influence the oracle.
US: 2:19 Min. ITALIAN VERSION: 2:34 Min. Sylvia and the merchant [00:45:16][00:34:38] The scene continues in the US version. Some senators are passing by, the merchant hides himself. Sylvia does not want to take the ring but the merchant convinces her because with it she can pass the border without any danger.

In the US version this scenes follows the conversation with Sylvia. In the Italian version the dialogue between Hannibal and Sylvia is longer. She seems to be unsure but follows him.
