Comparison of the cut US cinema version (R-rated) and the uncut Hong kong version (Category 2b) (both released by Sony Pictures)
Kung Hustle is a masterpiece of asian martial arts cinema with a large dose of humor and even beats Stephen Chow’s ingenious box office success Shaolin Soccer. While the film appeared in the uncut Hong Kong version nearly worldwide, it was shortened by a few scenes for the US theatrical release, alterative footing was used at times and some parts were even digitally overworked. Latter version was released on DVD. Since last year, the uncut version is also available in the US with the subline "Axe Kickin' Edition". The German version is also uncut.
00:00 In the US version, the Sony Pictures logo appears. In the HK version, first the Columbia logo and then the Star Overseas logo crosses the screen.
06:43 The US version shows English text, the HK version Chinese text. No time difference.
11:48 After the landlord is hit by a flower pot, blood flows out of the left side of his head. This was digitally removed in the US version. No time difference.
15:09 After Sing (Stephen Chow) is hit in the stomach by a lady farmer, he spits blood. This was also digitally removed in the US version. No time difference.
15:14 Alternative footing. The HK version shows the lady farmer’s blood-smeared face. The US version uses alternative footing with a different camera angle, and no blood can be seen. No time difference.
15:19 Another alternative take of the lady. No time difference.
42:04 The US version shows a squatting man, who just dropped his pants. The HK version also shows why he’s crouching there. He just took a s--t and the feces were digitally removed in the US version (unfortunately very difficult to see on the pictures). No time difference.
76:36 The "Beast" hits Sing in the stomach, so hard, his jacket bursts. In the US version, three subsequential takes are missing: a view of Beast’s face being splattered with blood, a slow-motion take of blood-spitting Sing and then again the Beast’s portrait. 5.5 sec.
76:53 After Beast hammered Sing’s head into the ground, the HK version shows a close-up of Beast’s hand being pulled out of the floor, blood trickling down it. 3.7 sec.
In the subsequent shot of Beast, the blood was digitally removed from his fist in the US version. No time difference.
98:42 The logos following the final credits differ. No time difference.
