Compared are the Italian Version (German DVD by Marketing) and the US Version (US-BD Scorpion Releasing).

After being wrecked, Lt. Claude de Ross and some prisoners are floating on the ocean in a little boat but they get stranded on an island after a storm. The island is ruled by Edmond Rackham who lives in an estate with Professor Ernest Marvin and his daughter. When the first castaways vanish into thin air and Claude gets warned by Amando to leave the island as soon as possible, he unravels Edmond's dark secret...

Sergio Martino's variation of the Dr. Moreau theme "L'isola degli uomini pesce" contained too much adventure and too little gore for some US producers. As a result, huge alterations were made for the US market. Originally, Joe Dante was supposed to re-shoot some scenes but Dante was already involved in other projects and recommended Miller Drake who re-shot several scenes and integrated them into the movie. In return, a lot of footage from the Original Italian Version was removed. There is an entirely new background in which two sailors take a couple to the island so that they can search for the treasure of gold. Also new is a scene in which a sailor comes upon a slimy body. Then, he gets killed by a fish monster. In order to add some gore, the scenes of mutated Jose were replaced as well. Basically, a few seconds here and a few seconds there were removed. But longer plot elements such as a voodoo ceremony by Shakira is also missing. This version was bought by Roger Corman and shown in theaters with the title "Something Waits In The Dark" but it failed. That is why Jim Wynorski made putting the movie on the market his business.
Subsequently, the movie got a new marketing campaign and was released as "Screamers" with the sensational tagline "You will actually see someone turned inside out... while he's still alive!" and a proper trailer including lots of gore scenes that aren't actually in the movie in theaters. The scenes were shot by Wynorksi himself on one weekend in a few space sets in Corman's film studios. After many complaints about the scene from the trailer not being in the actual picture, the theatrical prints were called in in order to add the gore scenes. There were approx. 20 prints of this Extended Version. These scenes had never been in the original negative though and that is also the reason why they are not on the US Blu-ray.

The US Version got a new dub as well. In addition to that, it also got new sound effects that weren't in the Original Version.

Previously, Screamers was only available on VHS in the US but thanks to Scorpion Releasing, this amazing reinterpretation is available in finest HD on Blu-ray which is a very recommendable release. It also contains a lot of bonus material in which several of the people involved discuss the history of origins.

The US Version contains new opening credits produced by Roger Corman. Two sailors and the couple James and Samantha arrive at the island. One of the sailors accompanies the couple to a cave while the other one keeps an eye on the boat.

The sailor only accompanies them to the cave entrance. It turns out the couple is searching for a treasure.

Inside the cave, they finds several bodies but also first signs of the treasure.

The sailor at the boat sees a shadow between the rocks and feels threatened. Inside the cave, the couple gets seperated. The sailor at the boat finds some gold on the ground. Suddenly, a claw appears out of nowhere and severs his head.

At the cave entrance, the sailor starts looking for his friend while James is looking for his wife Samantha inside the cave. He gets attacked, too.

Samantha is wanderung around the cave and the sailor finds some slime on a rock. A claw appears out of nowhere and rips his guts out.

Samantha keeps walking around the cave. She encounters heavily wounded James who collapses in front of her. Suddenly, the dead sailor falls off the ceiling.

Samantha makes a run for it but she is being stopped temporarily by a claw shooting out of the ground. She stumbles over stacked bodies. One of the deads awakes and attacks her.

She manages to escae and runs back to the boat. Having arrived, she finds the sailor's severed head One of the fish monsters sppears and attacks her.
