The theatrical version was compared with the preview version. Phase IVBiologist Hubbs notices that ants in a desert area in Arizona are changing their behavior. They are communicating between different ant species and build strange towers. Together with communications researcher James Lesko, he wants to investigate the behavior. A research station with state-of-the-art technology is set up in the middle of the desert. The two soon realize that the ants pose a serious threat... Phase IV is the only feature-length film by graphic designer Saul Bass, who has created posters, logos and opening credits for many well-known films (for example Vertigo). Phase IV is a subtle sci-fi horror about ants influenced by cosmic radiation that become a threat to humanity. Unusually and excitingly staged. Preview version on US Blu-rayIn the USA, Phase IV was released on March 26, 2024 by Vinegar Syndrome as a 3-disc set containing one 4K Ultra HD and two Blu-rays. The 4K Ultra HD and one Blu-ray contain the well-known theatrical version of the film, while the second Blu-ray contains the preview version. This is the original cut of the film, which was edited by Paramount shortly before its release. The preview version was restored on the basis of the 4K master, with the exclusive scenes in the preview version coming from a slightly poorer image source. The preview version has a handful of additional shots and a little more dialog, but the most striking change is in the film's finale. Here we see a surreal montage which suggests that the ants are taking over the earth and enslaving humans. In the theatrical version, there is hardly anything left of this and a voice-over from James explains that he and Kendra have been changed by the ants and that the reason for this has yet to be explained to them. James' voice-over at the beginning of the movie is also missing in the preview version. In my opinion, the preview version is the better cut of the movie. The surreal ending skillfully rounds off the already strange film. The end of the preview version was already in the bonus material of the German, British or French Blu-ray, but the complete preview version has now been released for the first time by Vinegar Syndrome.
