Comparison between the European version on the German Blu-ray from Universal and the US version on the American 4K Blu-ray from Universal
- One difference
Joe Wright directed Pride and Prejudice in 2005 as a British-French co-production starring Keira Knightley, Donald Sutherland, Rosamund Pike, Carey Mulligan, and Judi Dench. Among the many adaptations of Jane Austen's novel, published in 1813, this is certainly one of the best known, and on November 25, 2025, the film had its 4K premiere, at least in the US. Taking a look at this, we noticed once again what has basically been documented online since the first releases in the US: The version created for release in America offers an alternative, or rather simply an additional ending. While the novel shows much more of the couple's life together and also of the Bennets, the original European version ends with Mr. Bennet approving the marriage of Lizzy and Darcy. The Americans apparently wanted it to be a little more romantic, so there is an additional scene of Darcy and Elizabeth pondering their future life together. Quite schmaltzy, a matter of taste. The scene was already included separately in the bonus material on the European DVDs, and on the new 4K Blu-ray, as on the previous US DVD and Blu-ray, it is included in the film itself. Our complete comparison showed that there are no differences beyond this (apart from the company information at the beginning).
Running times are listed according to the following scheme The German Blu-ray starts with the Universal logo, while the American 4K Blu-ray starts with the Focus Features logo. Shortly thereafter, the opening credits above the first shot also differ accordingly.
German Blu-ray 8 seconds longer
120:14-120:15 / 120:06-121:46 In the European version, you see Mr. Bennet looking satisfied for a moment longer, and then the credits start rolling.
In the US version, there is another scene with our two lovebirds. They are sitting outside Pemberley in the semi-darkness and teasingly discuss what Elizabeth should be called after the wedding. Mr. Darcy: “How are you this evening, my dear?” Elizabeth: “Very well. Only I wish you would not call me my dear.” Mr. Darcy: “Why? Elizabeth: ”Cause it's what my father always calls my mother when he's cross about something." Mr. Darcy: “What endearments am I allowed?” Elizabeth: “Well, let me think. Lizzie, for everyday. My pearl, for Sundays. And Goddess Divine, but only on very special occasions.” Mr. Darcy: “And what shall I call you when I'm cross? Mrs. Darcy?” Elizabeth: “No. No. You may only call me Mrs. Darcy when you are completely and perfectly, and incandescently happy.” Mr. Darcy: “And how are you this evening, Mrs. Darcy?” He kisses her and repeats: “Mrs. Darcy. Mrs. Darcy. Mrs. Darcy. Mrs. Darcy.”
US version 99.3 sec (= 1:39 min) longer |
