Bridesmaids

Comparison:

  • Theatrical Version
  • Unrated Version
Release: Sep 26, 2011 - Author: Mike Lowrey - Translator: Sebbe - external link: IMDB
Bridesmaids is another production by Judd Apatow, who isn't the director, just the producer of this movie. Leading actress Kristen Wiig is one of Apatow's regular actresses and with a runtime of nearly 2 hours some parallels are quite obvious. The movie itself is clearly addressed to a female audience, apart from Annie's love interest, men rather stand in the background or are quite stereotyped.

This was obviously well received in the USA grossing 169 million dollars, worldwide 285 million dollars, with a budget of 33 million dollars. So to continue this success they decided to put in addition to the Theatrical Version (Rated R for some strong sexuality, and language throughout) a longer unrated version on the DVD and Blu-ray.

It's not that surprising that the unrated version doesn't offer much more obscenities and revealing moments for the Theatrical version already contains several crude jokes. The new material is narrowed down to scene extensions which also could have been removed from the Theatrical version to streamline it a bit.

Compared are the Theatrical Version (R-Rated) and the Unrated Version (both on the US DVD by Universal).

4 Extended Scenes

The Unrated Version is 392.8 Sec., about 6 minutes and 33 seconds, longer than the Theatrical Version.
Extended Scene
0:16:11: The conversation of Annie and her mother goes on in the Unrated Version.

Mother: "I bet she got that car by giving your dad something sexually. 'Cause there was one thing I would never do, and I'm sure Barb is a champion at it."
Annie: "I-- I don't want to know."
Mother: "It's called a "chicken coop"."
Annie: "Of course it is."
Mother: "You start at the back and you peck your way to the front like you have a beak. And then you end up with two eggs in your mouth."
Annie: "That's gross."
Mother: "Well, I'm sure your dad likes it. Of course, he grew up on a farm."
Annie: "Okay..."
Mother: "Yeah..."

Extended Scene
0:48:23: Becca mocks about Annie being single. Very sensitive and helpful.

Becca: "So, Annie, do you have a date for the wedding?"
Annie: "Um... I don't... I don't think I'm bringing anybody, I guess."
Becca: "Please, can I set you up? Please? Annie, you can't go to the wedding alone. Please? If you go alone people might think you're a prostitute."
Megan: "Maybe."
Becca: "I'm sorry."

Extended Scene
0:48:25: At this point, there's a whole block of new scenes in the Unrated Version. At first the car ride of Annie and Lillian after the fiasco in the bridal mode store is different and longer in the Unrated Version. The dialogue is slightly different here and Annie gets out of the car to throw up.

Theatrical Version:
Annie: "You okay?"
Lillian: "I just took a shit in the middle of the street. I just shit."
Annie: "People do that."
Lillian: "I shit... I shitted in my shorts. I shit myself."

Unrated Version:
Annie: "You okay?"
Lillian: "I crapped my wedding dress. I crapped... I... I crapped my wedding dress."
Annie: "Lunch was fun though, right? It was a good time, all the girls together."
Lillian: "Is this a sign, Annie?"
Annie: "No. I'm just going to pull over really quick, though, because..."
Lillian: "What?"
Annie: "... my tire just feels a little..."
Lillian: "Where are you going?"
Annie: "My tire just feels a little low. I just want to check out my tire real quick."
Then she pukes outside and gets back into the car.

In the longer version then follow completely new scenes of Annie doing her make-up in the bathroom while her roommates sit in the bathtub quite atypical for brother and sister. Gil asks Annie to hand him a disposable shaver with which he shaves the armpit of his sister.

Then follows a scene in which Annie has a date with a guy named Pete. He opens the door and asks her to wait in the living room while he's getting ready. His son Taylor sits there and they talk with each other which is rather uncomfortable for Annie.

Annie: "So, how old are you? Do you watch movies?"
Tyler: "Are you afraid of dying?"
Annie: "Hmm?"
Tyler: "Are you afraid of dying?"
Annie: "Um... I don't know. I mean, I guess everybody is. I don't know. Why?"
Tyler: "Because my mom is going to kill you. You're making me uncomfortable. Your hair looks burned."
Annie: "Okay."
Tyler: "Are you going to make a baby with my father?"
Annie: "I don't... I don't know."
Tyler: "My grandma died where you're sitting."
Annie: "She died right here?"
Tyler: "Right where your underpants are. You wanna watch me dance?"
Annie: "Sure."

When Annie's going upstairs, she notices Pete phoning very intimate with his wife about how he's missing her and he even calls Annie unattractive. Shocked by that, she goes down again where she notices that the boy took some of his mother's contraceptive pills. She predicts him physical consequences and leaves the house hastily.

Extended Scene
2:04:52: The home video of Megan and air marshal Jon is longer in the Unrated version. She sticks slices of ham on his chest and eats them. Jon's reaction doesn't really tell if he likes it or if it hurts.
