Rise of the Footsoldier

Comparison:

  • Original Version
  • Extended Version
Release: Mar 12, 2013 - Author: Mike Lowrey - Translator: Mike Lowrey - external link: IMDB
The real case of the Rettendon Murders, which took place in the UK back in 1995, still provokes interest among their citizens. British filmmakers recognized the cinematic potential of that topic and try to exploit it. Until today, there are four films dealing with the events: Gangsters - The Essex Boys (starring Sean Bean), followed by Rise of the Footsoldier, Bonded by Blood and in early 2013, The Fall of the Essex Boys marks the fourth entry.

The here discussed Rise of the Footsoldier is a knockout. This thriller tells a story across several years and manages to set entertaining highlights along this structure. The characters are exceptionally well developed and you get the feeling to be right in the middle of it all. Even though it's inspired autobiographically, it would have been almost impossible to fill a fully fictional gangster story with more visual appeals than are provided here. The level and amount of violence are enormously high, the BBFC 18 rating is well-earned.

Almost 5 years later, director Julian Gilbey went back into the editing room and assembled a prolonged version that offers more than 16 minutes of additional footage. The title Extreme Extended Edition is also fitting since it does deliver on both story enhancement and violence. Even though the film's theatrical runtime was close to 2 hours, the additional plot scenes are actually making an already good film better. Considering the brutality that was already on a high level, the number of extensions in that department are a little surprising, making the events even more tense.
