Continuation of the scene from 22:46 / 30:59-36:42

A deer approaches, and Thorin shoots an arrow, missing it.
Bilbo: "What are you doing? You shouldn't have done that. It's bad luck."
Thorin: "I don't believe in luck. We make our own luck."
Bombur falls to the ground, snoring, and has to be carried by the others.
One of the dwarves says shortly after that: "We need to take a rest."
They halt and hear strange voices.
Bilbo: "What is that? Those voices. Can you hear them?"
Thorin: "I hear nothing. No wind, no birds."
- "What hour is it?"
- "I do not know."
- "I do not even know what day it is."
Thorin: "This is taking too long. Is there no end to this accursed forest?"
Nori: "None that I can see. Only trees and more trees."
Thorin seems to be recognizing something: "This way. Do as I say. Follow me."

Bilbo is fascinated by the spider webs, but his touches causes vibrations in the wood, and he panics.
Bilbo: "No, no, wait. Wait. Stop. We can't leave the pa... We must stay on the path."
Then we see the dwarves carrying the heavy Bombur.

Change in editing
23:02-23:17 / 36:58

Now we see a part of this scene in the Theatrical Edition, where Bilbo is playing with the spider web. However, the cuts have been rearranged and the total scene is significantly shorter.

+ 15,8 sec

73:07 / 86:47-88:05

The Master of Laketown complains about Bard; during his speech he remains on the screen the entire time; in the TE there is a cut to Bard over his last words. The scene between Master and Alfrid continues in the EE: they are talking about Bard and his influence. The Master has a plan.

Master: "(That trouble-making bargeman is behind all this.) No one else would have the..."
Alfrid interrupts him, putting a plate with food before him: "Bollocks, sire. Ram and goat, sautéed in a lovely little mushroom gravy."
A cut to the eating Master, with commenting Alfrid: "In an ideal world, sire, we'd arrest him. But Bard has the favor of the people. They see him as a leader. Someone they can truly admire. Modest, intelligent, handsome, athletic..."
The Master keeps eating rather messily and says: "Yes, he's clearly modeling himself on me. That's no crime. I wonder... I wonder if some ancient law might exist that forbids bargemen from asking questions. You think such a venerable statute might exist?"
Alfrid: "Almost certainly, sire. I'll write one immediately."
He walks out of the room and the Master says: "You picked the wrong man to tangle with, Master Bard. I hope you're watching yourself because I'll be watching you."

Alternative Scene
73:37-73:44 / 88:35-90:31

After our heroes have crept out, Bard sneaks into his home in both versions.

In the Theatrical Edition he is seen shortly by a woman.

The Extended Edition shows the Company being in trouble once again.

Bard: "Follow me."
Bilbo: "What is this place?"
Thorin: "This, Mr. Baggins, is the world of Men."
As they keep walking through the crowd, Bard says: "Keep your head's down, keep moving."
A guard sees them and yells: "Halt. In the name of the Master of Lake-town I said halt. Halt! Stop them!
The dwarves make it inside; as the guards follow them, the dwarves overwhelm them.
The woman from the TE is shown here, too - however, she sees the guards being dragged away.

Another man comes in: "What's going on here? Stay where you are. Nobody leaves."
The dwarves hide, as Bard comes out and greets the man: "Braga."
Braga: "Sorry?"
Bard: "You."
Braga: "What are you up to, Bard?"
Bard: "Me? Nothing. I'm looking for nothing."
In the background we see one of the guards wake up, but he is knocked unconscious with a flower-pot once again. Braga hears it and rushes forward. However, the dwarves just manage to hide the guard's head under a basket.
Bard holds up a bodice: "Hey, Braga. Your wife would look lovely in this."
Braga: "What do you know of my wife?"
Bard: "I know her as well as any man in this town."
Braga walks away, infuriated.

Extended Edition 108,7 sec (= 1:49 min) longer
