Regardless of whether it is Twilight, The Hunger Games or Divergent - most of the young adult movies turn out to be great hits at the moment. The same goes for The Maze Runner which grossed over 340 million dollars worldwide. The studio already announced sequels.
Yet, some of those movies include visual violence that might not always be appropriate for the targeted audience. In the UK, The Hunger Games had to be cut to get a lower rating (BBFC-12). This version was not only shown in theatres but also released on DVD. A similar thing happened to The Maze Runner. Since the uncut version would have gotten a BBFC-15 rating, 20th Century Fox decided to cut a few sequences out in order to get a more target-audience-friendly rating.
Roughly 40 seconds of violence or seemingly unpleasant scenes were cut out in order to get the movie into theatres with a BBFC-12 rating. Additionally, some of the action scenes include a scensored soundtrack which, however, is actually hard to hear. Unfortunately, this is the only version that was released on the regular DVDs and Blu-Rays. The only uncut version - which among other places is available at HMV - is the steelbook version.
This is a comparison between the cut BBFC 12 version and the uncit PG-13 version, both released by 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment.
The comparison revealed 16 differences:
*15 shortened scenes in the BBFC-12 version
*1 scene with alternative footage
Overall, the BBFC-12 version is 41.88 seconds shorter.
