99:17-99:25 / 103:20-103:28

The first shot of the V'ger has been redesigned. The follow up shot with the earth also looks a little different now.

This also looked different in the theatrical version. Here the shot was rotated, which resulted in a continuity error with the direction of the shot. The colored reflection was also adjusted - and the following earth shot was also different.

99:45-99:59 / 103:49-104:04

Further shots from this perspective were designed and timed somewhat differently. The follow-up shot from Earth also deviates significantly.

In the theatrical version, instead, you only saw this across the screen and then recycled shots of the gunfire.

105:15-105:20 / 109:34-109:39

A small white light has now been added to the center of the screen and thus to the tunnel that can be seen there.

2001 DVD Director's Cut2022 4K Director's Cut

In the theatrical version, the tunnel didn't even exist on the screen yet; instead, you could already see V'ger Island there.

105:30-105:32 / 109:50-109:52

The screen differs here as well.

105:35-105:39 / 109:55-109:59

Same game with the close-up.

Ditto.

106:13-106:17 / 110:34-110:39

And again.

107:07-107:15 / 111:30-111:39

How the Enterprise flies through the tunnel has already been added specifically for the DVD-DC, or was simply not seen at all in the theatrical version. The shot was completely rebuilt for the 4K DC.

109:31-109:35 / 114:00-114:04

When the Enterprise reaches the end of the tunnel, there's another shot made exclusively for the DVD-DC, which has been rebuilt again for the 4K-DC.

109:44-110:04 / 114:14-114:34

V'ger Island, shrouded in light, has been reworked again (during two shots): The dots outside now look more like stars, which is probably more in line with the original vision.

In the theatrical version, this shot also looked significantly different, more like a carpet of tiles.

110:06-110:31 / 114:36-115:02

When Illia points to the screen and shortly afterwards moves away again to the side, this was adjusted accordingly.

111:05-111:46 / 115:38-116:21

A shot of the Enterprise was updated again and the lightning effect was placed in a completely different spot. The following shot of the saucer was also animated a bit differently. The tiles to the bridge at the bottom left build up a bit more elegantly.

The theatrical version had a different shot of the saucer and the structure of the tiles looked completely different.

By the way, here's another storyboard from back then that shows quite well how close the 4K version is now closer to the plan back then.

111:53-112:08 / 116:28-116:44

When the crew enters the tiles, you see basically the same shot (completely rebuilt for the DVD-DC), but e.g. the flashes around it or the background on the right differ a bit.

2001 DVD Director's Cut2022 4K Director's Cut

In the theatrical version, of course, these shots were also different. In the second one, you could still see the original matte painting in the background, while both DC variants show a CG island.

112:12-112:20 / 116:48-116:56

Again, in a (DC-exclusive) shot from walking across the tiles, it's mainly the flashes that diverge.

Here is also a storyboard from that time, which shows quite well how close the 4K remastering resembles the vision of Robert Wise.

112:47-113:05 / 117:24-117:43

The flashes were reworked during several shots of the crew. In the theatrical version, these flashes did not exist at all.

117:08-117:22 / 121:57-122:11

Again, flashes in the background have been slightly reworked.

118:40-118:44 / 123:32-123:36

In the 4K DC, a red cloud at the top now moves from left to right through the image for the first time.

2001 DVD Director's Cut2022 4K Director's Cut

Shortly after that, the background differs again in such a way.

123:44-123:58 / 128:49-129:03

The 4K DC adds additional moiré effects via the shot of the rising V'ger. The following shot, which was added exclusively to the DVD-DC, was also significantly reworked.

125:56-126:05 / 131:07-131:17

A legendary goof was corrected for the first time in 4K DC: Spock and McCoy now wear their own jackets throughout. Previously, you could always see how (after a close-up of Spock's proper red bracelet) a medium long shot suddenly had Spock wearing McCoy's light green bracelet.

126:59-130:51 / 132:13-136:43

In the theatrical version, it was faded to black from the original stars for the end credits. In the DVD-DC, a fade-in to another star field was used. This transition is now a bit smoother in the 4K DC. Also, the credits now have a different size + golden edges again, as during the opening credits.

The credits then run a little slower and are arranged differently towards the end when the original novel is mentioned. The closing texts for the Director's Edition also differ and a section on the 2022 remastering has been added. In addition, "For Bob" appears and finally you get the other Paramount logo again.
