After the History Channel stopped doing real history documentaries and started focussing pseudo-scientific studies (UFOs and the like) as well as pseudo documentaries (Pawn Stars) which they achieve great successes with, they also tried out (mini) series. The Drama series Vikings is one of them and throughout the first two seasons entirely satisfied its audience. In early 2015, audiences will be able to enjoy the third season.
Just as in the previous season, all episodes were aired in a censored version on American TV. Besides numerous cuts to the plot, there are also several scenes that had to be censored. All nudity was deleted and some of the violence was toned down here and there. Still, the second season is pretty uninhibited and also appears to be a little heavier in terms of violence compared to season 1.
This is a comparison between the American TV Version aired on the History Channel and the Extended Version.
Both Versions differ in 9 scenes:
4 additional scenes in the Extended Version
2 additional scenes in the TV Version
3 scenes with alternative/extended footage
Overall, the Extended Version is 209.56 seconds (3:30 minutes) longer than the TV Version.
The TV Version includes a recape of the first season.
The horses are shown a little earlier in the TV Version.
0:16 minutes / 2:03 minutes
The tracking shot towards the Vikings' camps is different in both versions. The Extended Version is a little longer and shows Ragnar who waits for his brother Rollo. King Horik asks him whether or not he has heard something about Rollo and Ragnar says he has not. When Ragnar says "But I still believe in my heart that he won't betray me. He has no reason." the TV Version continues. However, it uses a different shot during the first part of the sentence.
78.48 sec. / 19.64 sec.
Rollo and Jarl Borg get ready for the battle. Blood splashes on the chest of both of them. Jarl picks up the skull and kisses it.
13:37 minutes / 13:50 minutes
Ragnar's speech was extended. The beginning of his speech was zoomed for the Extended Version. Ragnar talks about the west and all the great treasures that can be found there. He adds that they need to stop fighting each other.
20.24 sec. / 2.52 sec.
Lagertha gives her husband Ragnar a rather cold welcome. He looks at his son and then walks past Athelstan without saying a word. Behind him you can see that Rollo is lead away.
16:53 minutes / 16:12 minutes
Ragnar says that they fought, Jarl Borg did not want to give up and thus many people died. She also says that “One Eye“ is dead. In the TV Version he also says that, however, it uses a different shot.

The scene with Aslaug starts slightly earlier.
