Comparison between the TV Version and the extended DVD Version (both included in the DVD Box "Volume 8").

Family Guy is a very successful show aired on FOX. Since some jokes are simply too rude to air them on national television, the producers have to censor/cut scenes from time to time. However, they sometimes also cut some jokes away in order to reach the appropiate length for a TV-episode. Therefore, not all the changes that were made are a result of censorship. Nevertheless there still are enough hilarious, outrageous jokes in the show - fans will be in for a good time, weven when watching the TV Version on FOX. (I'm speaking from experience.)

BTW, it airs every sunday evening on FOX. That's really nice because you can also watch the new American Dad episode as well as the new episode of The Cleveland Show. So you've got a terrific triple feature. If you're watching FOX anyway, you can also watch the latest Simpsons episode. After all, what's better than spent your whole evening laughing your ass of while watching the latest episodes of the series by Seth MacFarlane plus some new adventures of Homer & Co?

The newest DVD Box-Set of Family Guy was released in July 2010. Just as usual, the box doesn't include a whole series but rather the second half of the 7th season and the first half of the 8th season. However, the UK makes everything even more complicated by calling the exact same Box-Set "Season 9" (which was released in November 2010).
However, fans probably got used to all these confusing titles, so let's just focus on the extended episodes on the new DVDs. Just as for the other Box-sets, the episodes in "Volume 8" are usually about 1 or 2 minutes longer than the TV Versions (which are included in the bonus material of the DVDs).

Episode 7x12 ("420") doesn't have any extensions on the DVD and the runtime is identical for both versions. Still, there's one significant difference between the two versions that could have been made due to censorship (too bad that Seth doesn't say anything about this in the audio commentary).
In this epsiode, Brian takes a stand for the legalization of marijuana. At the beginning, he's able to convince the citizens of Quahog with a nice song. Just as usual for Family Guy, they cut to scenes that match the lines from the song when Brian lists what people do to be relieved without using marijuana. They included a little reference to the pedophilia-debate of Michael Jackson - you see Stewie lying in bed with the musician who by the way died after the first run of this episode on april 19th 2009. In the DVD Version, he's topless (whie the rest of his body is covered by the blanket). In the TV Version he wears his regular clothes.

During the song, you hear the line "When Michael Jackson needs a rush, he humps a guy like me". Corresponding to it you see Stewie lying in bed next to the King of Pop. In the TV Version, Stewie wears his regular clothes while in the DVD Version he's naked.

No difference in time.
