Pete's Dragon - Blu-ray Release Ahead
While its rare that anniversary releases come out when a film is just 5 years old, it's common practice to begin with that after it passed the 10 year line. Oftentimes, every 5 years a new edition is released to attract new and old customers to buy the film once more. Now, Pete's Dragon will have its 35th birthday in 2012 and will get its obvious Anniversary Edition. At least it's the first time on Blu-ray. As it is typical for Disney, the set will also contain a DVD.
The history of versions is quite complex for this film. After it was shown as a roadshow in the US with introduction, intermission and a runtime of 134 minutes, it lost more and more scenes along the way until the bottom was reached with the US TV version running 92 minutes. While the most countries got a cut that runs 105/102 minutes (NTSC/PAL), the US got a version with a runtime of 128 minutes. This cut of the movie is closely resembling the roadshow version but has some alterations and the roadshow elements removed. This version will be on the Blu-ray (even though Amazon only lists a runtime of 88 minutes).
The Blu-ray will be released in the US on October 16th, 2012. You can order it here.
