MPAA doesn't like McConaughey's Killer Joe
The cast of Killer Joe features some prominent names. Director William Friedkin (The Exorcist) adapted a play by Pulitzer and Tony Award winner Tracy Lett. Matthew McConaughey, Gina Gershon, Emile Hirsch and Juno Temple are on board as actors. For those, who are not interested yet, the anticipation might rise with the MPAA rating that has just been announced. The board slapped the dark comedy with the infamous NC-17 rating.
The explanation for this reads: graphic aberrant content involving violence and sexuality, and a scene of brutality. Which scenes exactly account for this judgment remains to be seen but early reviews say that sexuality surfaces in a quite kinky way and that violence plays a certain role, as well.
The producing studio LD Entertainment has its own take on Killer Joe, though, and views it as R-Rated material. As expected, they announced to appeal and present their case to the MPAA in a hearing in order to get rid of the stigma that is NC-17. A decision should not take too long.
