Comparison between the TV-Version (taken from the Blu-ray) and the Extended Version (taken from the British DVD)

- 12 alterations, 3 of those including alternative footage
- Difference in running time: 142.7 sec (= 2:23 min)

Almost every episode of this sitcom classic were released in an extended version on the US DVDs. For TV some cuts were done in order to trim the episodes to the usual format, however, some censoring can be found as well. In Great Britain, only the TV versions were released on DVD at first yet the newer "15th Anniversary Edition" contains the extended episodes as well and was used as a comparison here.

The new Blu-ray release is identical all around the world and contains only the TV Versions, the extensions can also not be found in the bonus material. People interested in buying the series now have to decide: Longer episodes or better picture quality? The latter is really great on Blu-ray, rescanning of the original 35mm tape led to a brilliant picture and it is now also in the 16:9 format with more information on the side of the picture. On the other hand, about 2 minutes are missing per episode.

The here compared episode 1x10 ("The One With The Monkey") is almost 2.5 minutes longer whereas most of the difference results from small, minor extensions. But there are some bigger differences in the second half of the episode as well. For instance, there's more footage with the unique Janice, Rachel got in a fight at the airport and she has the chance to lick her wounds in two additional scenes and Fun Bobby gets a slap on the wrist by Monica because of the way he mourns his grandpa.

Phoebe: "Oh, all right, you guys! It's starting to snow."
They're approaching the window and Phoebe says: "Oh, and look, Ugly Naked Guy is hanging candy canes."
Rachel looks more closely: "Where? Ohhh, wow, that's...festive.

The TV Version changes the perspective and David simply says: "I don't know what I'm gonna do. I just..." - then the comment "You decide!" already follows.

In the Extended Version, he also says in the previous distance shot: "I don't know what I'm gonna do. I just... How can I leave you? I've just...found you."
Phoebe gets sentimental for a moment and goes into it: "Oh, David... What are you going to do?"
David (earlier in the shot the TV Version continues with later): "I don't know."

Janice: "Oh, I am fantastic...now! You know what's totally amazing? It's just like we have been back together for, like what, like 10 minutes. And..."
Chandler interrupts: "Is that all?"
Janice: "And it's just like we were never apart. Y'know, I mean, of course, we were... But forgive and forget. Well... forget."

Phoebe: "You...umm...went a little wide on the lip."
Rachel: "Oh! Right there?"
Phoebe: "Yeah."
Rachel: "It's hard for me to tell. My eye's closing up."
Monica is working her lips with the pen: "Let me get it for ya. Ok."
Rachel whines: "All right."
Monica: "You know what? You look fine."
Rachel: "Ok, here we go! Screw Paolo. Screw that psycho cab lady. It's New Years Eve. Let's have a good time."
Monica: "Yes! Ok."
Rachel: "Ok, here we go!"
She gets up but she walks in the wrong direction.
Monica: "Ok. All right there you go. No, this way. You're fine. There you go."

She forces herself to laugh: "Look at me! Spilling everywhere. Huh..."

The Extended Version contains more dialog in the living room. This scene also explains why Bobby has a horn in his mouth at the very end.
Monica: "Bobby? Fun Bobby? Let me talk to you for just a sec. Umm, look a...I recently lost a grandparent myself, so I really know exactly how you feel. But, uh... you're really bringing the party down."
Fun Bobby: "I'm sorry..."
Monica interrupts: "Yeah, yeah, ok." - she puts a horn in his mouth - "There you go. There you go!"

The TV Version simply contains a slightly longer version of the previous shot of Fun Bobby and the others on the couch (no screens).
