The release history of Naked Killer, the probably most famous of the Cat III movies, is more or less comparable to the one of Jet Li's Black Mask, which is also very confusing. There are many astonishing parallels: Naked Killer was also pre-censored in HK, there are different export versions, exclusive plot scenes and no single version featuring all of the known footage. This comparison and a line of related ones aims to make things more clear, in order to possibly close the chapter Naked Killer in that aspect, although most of the contained information will be aimed at hardcore HK fans with a general interest in the version history of the movie.
The Individual Versions in Detail:
Original HK Theatrical Version:
Releases: HK Theatres/ HK DVD First Issue, VHS, Video CD and LD (all by Mei Ah) / UK VHS (Cantonese with English subtitles)
There were already some problems before the first release in Hong Kong: Despite the highest possible rating, Cat III, several violent and erotic scenes, as well as others that referred to genitalia had to be removed. Some words (usually penis) were also beeped in the original Cantonese audio track. This version was released in HK cinemas and was also used for all of the HK first issues, e.g. the DVD release by Mei Ah, which was heavily imported by fans but is by now out of print and very rare.
However, the HK theatrical version was also released in the UK on VHS with the original sound track and subtitles, as was then still common practice for HK movies. At the same time, there was also a second VHS available, which contained the Western export version (see further down).
Asian Export Version/ German VHS:
Releases: Malaysia and other Asian countries, German VHS (SPIO/JK)
It is not uncommon for HK movies that there are special export versions for other Asian markets like Malaysia, China, Thailand or Taiwan. These are always adapted to the specific countries, which may have even stricter rules regarding nudity or the depiction of corrupt policemen and state officials. Sometimes a movie is not only cut but there are also new scenes alternate dialog in it in order to mellow or soften some aspects, e.g. a hero might be more law-abiding than in the original version.
The same happened to Naked Killer, there was a separate export version produced for the Asian market. This version is based on the already pre-censored HK theatrical version, however, some additional scenes (mostly of erotic nature) were removed and others inserted. As a result, the protagonist (Kitty) is now actually a policewoman which even gets promoted in the end. This version was certainly released in Malaysia, but probably in other Asian countries as well. Surprisingly, this version was also exported to Germany where it was used for the old VHS release that received the SPIO/JK rating. This version was further censored in order to achieve the FSK 16 rating in Germany and is even still to be found on the FSK 16 DVD. The result, certainly not to be recommended, does not even reach 70 minutes of running time (69:28 min.).
Western Export Version:
Releases: UK VHS (English dubbed edition)
It is common practice to specially produce export versions of HK movies for the Western market, too. Equal to the export versions for the Asian market, they are adapted to the special conditions and needs of the Western market. The maybe commonest category of cuts is the removal of humoristic actions, because the Asian slapstick humor is often rather perceived as silly tomfoolery in Western countries. But there are other reasons for cuts and shortenings to be found in several Western export versions, as for example general cuts in order to tighten the movie up, the cutting out of cameos of stars especially known in Asia and the removal of scenes which contain deeper references to the Asian culture and hence are seen as too hard to comprehend for the average Western viewer. On the other hand, story sequences which were exclusively inserted for the Western market are quite usual in Western export versions.
A special export version of Naked Killer was also produced for the Western market - but it’s apparently not that widespread. The only release we know of is the UK VHS dubbed in English. Further releases in other European countries or the USA are nevertheless possible. The Western export version is clearly based on the old, already pre-censored HK theatrical version. This means that it contains all the cuts and censorings which had been made in Hong Kong before the first release. Furthermore, it generally contains the same censorings as the Asian export version, but it’s not completely equal to the latter. On the one hand, the exclusive story sequences of the Asian export version (=German VHS) are NOT contained in the Western export version. This is quite clear for, as already mentioned, these scenes were mostly inserted for Asian countries in order to provide an increased political correctness, hence are superfluous in the Western area. Moreover, additional cuts had been made for the Western export version, of which a few could be counted as censorings. In exchange, the Western export version contains a plot scene which runs 44 seconds and which can ONLY be found there. So, for hardcore fans or completists this version is probably worth a look. The separate report should be sufficient for everyone else. Due to the fact that the Western export version has the same cuts as the Asian export version, it can be assumed that, at first, all of the shortenings had been made for the general export in Hong Kong, and then the exclusive plot sequences were added to the basic version.
Uncut HK Reissue:
Releases: HK DVD by Mega Star / UK and NL DVD by Hong Kong Legends / US DVD and VHS by Tai Seng (not rated)
Together with the quick rise of the DVD, a DVD reissue had been put on the market in Hong Kong by Mega Star. They took special trouble to release the completely uncut and uncensored version of the movie for the first time. Not only does it contain all the scenes which were censored for the Asian export version, but it also contains those scenes which were already removed for the HK theatrical version. The HK rating stayed the same (Cat.III). This version should by now be the most frequent among movie fans, for it also can be found in good quality and with a lot of bonus material on the UK and NL DVD by the label Hong Kong Legends, which is very popular with HK fans.
But this version also doesn‘t have all the known scenes. The exclusive plot scenes of the Asian export version as well as the exclusive scene of the Western export version aren’t contained. These certainly are no cuts or shortenings, if anything they are rather the opposite, because said plot scenes, at least those from the Asian export version, were mostly just added to make the movie more politically correct and positive in its general tone for certain countries, as already mentioned above. Nevertheless, there are also missing some plot scenes in comparison to the German VHS, which those who know this version might notice.
US R-Rated Version:
Releases: US DVD by 20th Century Fox
Finally, the R-rated version, which was released on DVD in the USA by 20th Century Fox, has to be mentioned. This version is based on the uncensored HK reissue, but the nude scenes had been specially censored for the R-rating. In doing so, some longer parts instead of just short shots were shortened. Apart from the R-rated version there was before also released a DVD by Tai Seng in the USA, which contains the uncensored HK version (not rated).
Notes on the Report:
- The pre-censored HK theatrical version (see intro) is called “old HK version” in the report for a better understanding.
- Exclusive and alternative scenes which can only be found in the Western or Asian export versions are highlighted in color.
- Finally, it must be pointed out that in the reports the cut or censored version is, if possible, always compared with the version it is based on, as is usual for this site now for years. This is the only way to illustrate in the respective comparison the cuts and changes which were specially made for this version, without having confusing mixed and double mentions. But this also means that not every report shows all the scenes that were cut. The reader has to keep that “in mind“. An Example: the Asian export version was compared with the old, already pre-censored HK theatrical version. NOT with the completely uncensored HK reissue. This is because the Asian export version is based on the old HK version, as mentioned before. Hence, in the respective report are missing all the scenes which were before removed for the HK version. These can be looked up in the report comparing the old HK version with the HK reissue.
The comparison Western Export Version - Old HK Version breaks with this principle in a way: for the Western export version contains the censorings of the old HK version as well as those of the Asian export version, the latter would rather be the “fitting” counterpart. But the exclusive scenes of the Asian export version would then also lead to double mentions, so it was just compared with the old HK version.
(Intro by Glogcke)
The dialogue in the hall between Kitty and her superior is missing. Kitty says to him that Tinam apparently has some problems. He responds that Tinam accidentally shot his brother and now is scared of touching a gun. Moreover, he's impotent for the same reason. Tinam was also under medical treatment. The superior goes on telling her that due to this he must smuggle in Kitty to Cindy as quick as possible, in order to be able to do something against Princess. He will withdraw Tinam from this case.
Kitty: I just want to teach you how to behave! Will you cut the line in such impolite way in future?
Tinam: If there is no body around, won't you afraid I would rape you?
Kitty: I have seen something of you!
Tinam: What is it?
Kitty: Your mole!
Tinam furiously kisses Kitty's body.
Kitty interrupts him and says: You needn't knock so hard!
Tinam answers: I didn't!
A little bit later, there is again a conversation between Kitty and her superior:
Kitty says that Sister Cindy completely trusts her now and has taught her a lot about fighting techniques. At any rate, she is an outstanding killer. Her superior says that she should not let herself be seduced by Cindy and that she should withhold her feelings. Thereupon, Kitty answers that Cindy is not a bad person, because she just kills bad people. The superior responds that there are courts which can decide over Kitty's deeds. An officer joins them and is introduced to Kitty. The officer had been hurt by Kitty during an operation, so she apologizes to him. He says that it is all right and the injury wasn't too bad. He even would have himself beat up again by her in order to get the killers. Kitty turns to her superior with a laugh and asks him what she's supposed to do if Cindy wants her to kill people. He answers that she's allowed to kill bad people. Kitty says that she may decide this on her own, whereupon her superior nods.
The severed and missing penis is shown hanging in the curtain above Tinam. After that, Tinam's colleague talks to another policeman about the missing penis.
Tinam is about to put the piece of sausage into his mouth when his colleague comes and takes the sausage to eat it himself.
Tinam's Colleague: Why don't they heat the sausage first? It's cold!
A policeman looking for traces discovers the blood-stained piece of curtain, on which the severed penis lay shortly before, but which is by now in Tinam's lunch box.
Policeman looking for traces: There is some flesh up there!
Tinam's Colleague: What is it?
The policeman shows him a bag in which there are probably the victim's testicles.
Policeman: It seems to be the balls!
Tinam's Colleague: What?
Policeman: Scrotum! The color is similar to the one which you are holding!
Tinam's Colleague: Don't you wantme to lose my appetite? Never!
He puts the severed penis, which he mistakes for the sausage, into his mouth and eats it.
Tinam's Colleague: You will have chance now!
Tinam: If you let me choode, I prefer seeing Kitty again!
Colleague: Look at you, you seems to have eaten the penis!
Tinam walks angrily out of the picture.
Colleague: Have you eaten the lost penis? What? Don't you think I have eaten the penis?
There are following repeated cuts to some dancers in the disco and also to Princess, who has sex with a guy.
Before Princess thrusts the knife several times into the head of the guy in the pool Baby dives below him to cut off his penis.
The camera zooms in longer on Princess and Baby, who are sitting on the stairs of the blood-soiled pool and kissing and touching each other.
Princess: We have a big deadl left!
Baby: What is it!
Baby: Who is she?
Princess: It's...Sister Cindy!
Baby: She's your master, isn't she?
Princess: My master is already very difficult to deal with! Now she's got a very good new student!
Baby: You mean... we aren't good enough to kill them!
Princess: We should kill them one by one! First of all, we should get rid of her star pupil! Do you agree?
The servant goes out to Kitty and tells her that there are two people from the CID who want to talk with her. Tinam and his colleague look at her through the window.
Kitty turns to them and wants to know if they are from the police. Tinam says her name after that.
During the drive, Tinam is informed by a colleague on the phone that Kitty is in the hospital. Tinam starts worrying and immediately drives to the hospital. The scene goes on in Kitty's hospital room. Tinam walks towards her bed and sits beside her. Kitty wakes up, is glad to see him and hugs him. He gives her a bunch of flowers. But Kitty isn't interested in his present and they start kissing passionately. While Tinam is kissing Kitty, she takes a gun, puts it against his neck and pulls the trigger. When the shot is fired Tinam wakes up from his nightmare and rolls around in his bed in panic.
Tinam's Colleague: We have a gun more! My instinct tell me that! Something you can't do it by force! Just do what you're instructed, or you would be in deep shit!
Tinam: I just want to tell you a secret! After killing my brother! I have become impotent!
Colleague: What? That's shit!
Tinam: I have never impulsed! After seeing Kitty, on the next day, I woke up... I had priapism!
Tinam: Until seeing her in the pool, I have the sense of impulsed!
Colleague: Don't you want to tell me only she can cure your impotence?
They look down between Tinam's legs.
It's completely missing how Tinam masturbates in his bed as well as in the bath tub and is thinking of Kitty while doing so. Kitty's doing the same. The movie cuts to and fro between those two.
Tinam parks in front of Kitty's apartment.
The sex scene of Tinam and Kitty is missing, and so are the constant cuts to Princess and Baby, who are pleasuring each other.
HK Theatrical Version:
Kitty and Tinam are shown longer in the bed.
Tinam: What do you have in mind?
Kitty: Either you give up your job, or I give my job! Or, forget each other!
Tinam: Does your master want to kill me?
Kitty: I will talk to her! It's not the good timing to talk such thing!
Asian Export Version:
Tinam and Kitty walk through the park. Tinam says to her that he doesn't know how their shared future will look like, for she is a murderer and he a policeman. He wants her to turn herself in, because then the sentence would be lighter. Kitty turns around to him and answers that she's no murderer, but actually a policewoman. Tinam is glad about this and hugs her. Kitty explains that she somehow has to keep Sister Cindy from killing.

Princess tightens her grip between Tinam's legs.
After Princess has walked out of the picture with Baby, the two baddies are shown longer with Sister Cindy's corpse. One of them bends down to her and strokes her body with his hand. Then there's a cut to the dead Sister Cindy.
Kitty and a few bodyguards enter the room in which there are Princess and Baby.
Princess: You've come at last!
Kitty: Are you looking for me?
Princess: Come on, do you think, you can escape from me?
Kitty: Aren't you looking for me?
Princess: Look at you! You're dressing like a hooker! Tasteless!
Kitty: You don't like it, do you?
Princess: I love it! I love the way you look tarty!
Princess shakes Baby a little bit.
Princess: Listen, obey me...or I'll poke your eyes out!
Kitty already wants to leave, but is being called by Princess and turns around again.
Princess: Wait for me downstairs!
Kitty: I'll wait for you!
Kitty gets out while Princess and Baby cuddle for another moment.
It's completely missing how Princess and Kitty walk out to the pool to sit down at its edge. Shortly afterwards, they start kissing and caressing each other. Baby happens to see this at the window and is not quite happy about it.
Princess leaning over Kitty is shown longer.
Princess: But I won't let you die... until I've had you!
Tinam kisses Kitty longer. Finally, he aims with his gun at the oven and pulls the trigger, whereupon the oven explodes.
The endings are different in the two versions: in the old HK version, Tinam's colleague is shown longer in front of the house looking horrified at the flames after the explosion. After that follows a cut to Tinam and Kitty, who are embracing and kissing each other.
There's another ending in the Asian export version: there's a scene change after the explosion. Kitty is shown receiving a promotion from the police. She turns around and sees Tinam approaching with a bunch of flowers. She's happy about this and runs towards him. After a short conversation, Tinam clasps her in his arms and the end follows.
