Background

The first thing that comes to mind when this movie title is mentioned, is John Travolta swirling over the dance floor and the almost non-stop background music with hits of the Bee Gees, but this classic by John Badham is much more. It’s a social study with different kinds of socio-critical approaches and serious topics. Therefore, the in most countries quite high age rating is justified.
Due to its big success in the USA, a much more defused version of the movie was produced there in order to reach a wider audience with a lower age rating. The R-rated original version was in the cinemas in 1977, just one year later the new PG-rated version was highly advertised for (see the movie poster in the appendix).

The Brits got to see in the cinema the R-rated version as well as a version based on the PG-rated, but additionally censored. The former received an X-rating/BBFC18, the latter an A-rating/PG. The more censored version is hard to get and in the course of our research, we “unfortunately” could only find the uncensored BBFC18 VHS.

The uncensored R-rated version is internationally available on DVD and Blu-ray. The PG-rated existed on VHS with the rating clearly visible (see cover scan).

The Version

Censored were - who would have thought so - scenes depicting violence and sex as well as a lot of dialogues which refer to one of these topics and which are full of all kinds of swearwords. For the rough language is always present during the whole movie, there had to be altered a lot, which resulted in over 100 changes due to censoring.

In terms of cuts, the completely missing rape of Annette on the backseat is probably the most striking one. The top-less stripper can of course not be seen in the PG-rated version either and the brawl with the spics was defused at certain points. Apart from this, lines which contain swearwords or a few other things, like Tony’s grab in the crotch, were completely removed here and there.

At some points, dialogues were voiced anew but still have the same footage. Especially when the speaking person, or rather its mouth, isn’t clearly visible on-screen or the line is equal except for one bad word, this worked quite well - apart from some negative examples like "You fakers!" instead of "You fuckers!", which Annette shouts to the guys on the bridge.

Sometimes they had to be a little bit more creative when rewriting a dialogue, but then they used alternative takes. The takes throughout the movie are always quite long, so from time to time the footage differs for about a minute (so the actually exclusive footage from each version is therefore clearly longer than the actual runtime difference suggests!). These alternative scenes were probably intended for a TV broadcast in the USA, as is often done with American productions…so we have a further version, because the version shown in the US TV is apparently in most cases NOT the PG-rated version, which would actually be quite appropriate for this. Instead, an equally defused version based on the R-rated version is shown, which contains some further plot scenes as compensation for the missing footage.

The US TV version is just mentioned here for additional information. In the following, a detailed explanation of the differences between the PG-rated and the R-rated version is presented.

121 Differences:
* 47 cuts
* 43 audio changes
* 31 scenes with alternative footage

The runtime indications are listed as follows:
Time of the PG-rated version / time of the R-rated version

Notes:

- The words which were substituted or removed completely in the anew voiced parts in the PG-rated version are written in bold face in the representations of the dialogues so that they are easier distinguishable. If complete sentences before or after are R-rated exclusive, it’s not specifically marked even if there are swearwords in it.

- We always tried to summarize the changes reasonably as well as, for example, separating audio-only changes (so just differing dialogues with same footage) from changes that go together with cuts. The above mentioned number of changes can differ, depending on how you count.

The dialogue, however, is identical.

Subsequently, the PG-Rated version misses out on a short shot of Tony – the scene change happens a little later.
