This bittersweet comedy follows the protagonist Robbie sneaking into the hospital to hold his newborn son Luke in his arms for the first time. In this emotional moment, he swears that Luke will not have the tragic life he had to go through.

Just out of prison, however, Robbie is getting into trouble again and has to do 300 hours of social work as a kind of last chance. During this work, he meets Rhino, Albert and Mo, who have problems finding a job due to their criminal past just like him.

Robbie could not know that drinking migh change his life. That is, as long as it is not Buckfast but the finest single malt whiskeys. The social worker Harry introduces Robbie to the liquid gold and a new passion is found. They soon find out that Robbie has a fine nose and a very good palate.

Harry takes the four boys to a whiskey tasting tour to Edinburgh. Here, Robbie learns that the last barrel of an old and very expensive whiskey is supposed to be auctioned somewhere in the Highlands. Robbie wants to have some of it, and so the boys go hitchhiking up north to the Balblair distillery. The "Angels' Share" is the part of the whiskey that evaporates through the barrels as years roll by. Robbie wants to take a few bottles as his own part of the share, which might either give him a careless future or 20 years in prison...

The movie was released in two different versions in the UK, of which one was rated BBFC-15, the other BBFC-18. The latter does not really run any longer, the only difference is the use of the word Cunt. As long as this word is used between friends, it is not seen as a very big problem. If it is used as a serious insult, however, it is seen as inappropriate for a young audiences.
