Comparison:

  • US Version
  • International Version - Part 1
Release: Mar 05, 2014 - Author: MajoraZZ - Translator: Sebbe - external link: IMDB
Comparison between the US DVD (R-Rated) and the German DVD (FSK “Keine Jugendfreigabe” / 18 and above).

What can we say? Those of you who still remember the last, really nice report on the movie Cyborg written by Bob can probably guess already what's about to follow now. The two versions of The Flock also differ almost every second. Sometimes these are just some minor differences, like different shots from different angles, but every once in a while you'll get to see alternative footage for several minutes, which is not at all contained in the other version, or shown at another point in the movie. For example, among the first differences is a scene which is shown at the beginning of the International version, but was placed right at the end of the US version. The soundtrack is different throughout the whole movie, which is why these alterations won't be mentioned at all from here onwards. Though the soundtrack is quite similar at times, the instruments then differ.
The style of the movie is just not the same in the two versions. The US version tends to show long shots, and only switches back and forth between two or three shots most of the time. In contrast to that, the International version frequently uses only short shots, but cuts back and forth between five, six or seven different ones. Moreover, the International version often contains some visual effects, which the US version lacks completely.
Here are two rough comparisons to give you a clearer idea of the two versions: the editing of the US version is kind of similar to the style of the drama series Breaking Bad. On the other hand, the International version rather resembles the editing of the Saw movies with all the quick shots and visual effects, like white fades and fast zooms.
So everyone has to choose for themselves which version is to be preferred. The US version seems a bit more realistic and subtle, while the International version surely is edited in a professional way, but seems rather insincere and artificial. The US version has so far only been released in the USA.

Another point in reference to the statement “The International version seems more professional, but insincere” is the fact that they used an alternative color filter in the International version. This filter gives the picture a higher brightness value and also a higher contrast value, which is the reason why some shots that take place during dusk/dawn look as if they were shot in bright daylight in the International version.
Some examples:

International VersionUS Version

Censorship in the R-rated?

Another thing worth mentioning: the US version is censored very slightly. Sexual innuendos are definitely a bit defused; a brawl seems just a bit “weaker” in the US version. Moreover, a mutilated corpse is not that clearly visible in the US version as it is in the International version.
But one shot clearly stands out at the end of the movie. The International version contains a closer and more bloody shot at this point, while the US version shows this from further away and with almost no blood. Though these are only some minor alterations which don't spoil the movie in any way.

Let's get down to the nitty-gritty:

Running time US version: 96:28 minutes (NTSC)
Running time International version: 101:07 minutes (PAL)

The beginning of the movie clearly differs in the two versions.
The US version shows Gere reading the newspaper and cutting out some articles. After that, he is driving with his car on the highway. He stops because of some cows, but then drives on.
The International Version immediately begins with Gere driving. Every now and then, a flash back is shown in which we see his wife.

Altered Audio Track International Version
4:03 - 4:06 (International Version)
The guy who’s being interrogated moans several times in the US Version. In the International Version, there’s silence. As a result, one might get the wrong impression during the following scene when Gere slaps the black guy in the face. In the International Version, it looks like Gere simply intends to put him under pressure while it looks like he slaps him because he can’t give in to his sexual attraction.

The US Version immediately cuts to the motel. The International Version contains a few more frames of the flashback. Often, one gets to see the same woman on a horse. Later, there’s a camera team and a bunch of cops standing in front of a house. Every now and then, there’s a shot of Gere sitting in his car – combined with shots of the woman fading in and out. The scene at the motel (at which point the versions are back in sync) is being faded in here while US Version simply cuts there in a rough way.

Another huge difference.
The US Version shows Gere walking outside, swinging the baseball bat. Then Gere again, he walks into a restaurant. He takes a seat and starts reading newspaper articles. He marks a few things, thinks about a few things and then he goes to work.
The International Version on the other hand shows him longer at the motel. He’s changing his clothes. The goes to a tavern and starts marking newspaper articles instantaneously. A woman arrives and tries to hit on him but when he makes an effort to interrogate her, she leaves as fast as she showed up. Then an exterior shot of the motel. It’s night. Suddenly, one sees a woman screaming. Apparently, she’s wounded. Then an exterior shot of Gere’s place of employment.

At this point there is a huge difference between the two versions. None of the shots or the dialogs are identical. In the US Version Geere asks Allison to wait outside but she refuses to do so. Geere gives the girl his card and tells her that she can always call him if she needs him. At the same time he notices that a piece of one of her teeth is missing. He asks the man if he is responsible for it but the latter punts rather rudely. Geere gets a little angrier and reposes his question. They stare at each other for a while and then Geere looks at the man's fist. He says that the guy seems to love punching a woman's body with his knuckles but the man only laughs. Geere mockingly gets calm and says that this is of course totally okay. Geere says that he only came to welcome him in the United States. Allison and Geere then leave the apartment. Scene change: The two of them sit in an Asian restaurant and eat. Geere marks a few articles. The shot when both versions are in sync again is shown slightly earlier in the US Version.
The International Version shows something entirely different: Geere immediately asks the girl if the boy punched her and she seems scared. Geere says that he is sure to find a lot of marks on her body. The boy reacts rather dominantly saying that she will surely put her clothes off for Geere and Allison if he says so. Geere is rather reserved when asking if they could have a look. However, the boy says that Allison is supposed to ask. Allison says that she would consider this rather inappropriate. Geere makes the proposal that she could also go out now. The boy interrupts the conversation, saying that he wants Allison to stay. He tells the girl to undress but before she is able to completely strip off her clothes Allison starts to laugh, saying that this is pretty ridiculous. Geere stays calm and says that everything is fine and that the girl does not have to put her clothes off. Now he – as in the US Version – gives her her card and tells her that she can reach him any time. Only now the International Version includes the sequence where Geere notices the broken tooth and repeatedly asks the boy if he is responsible for it. From this moment onwards, the dialog is identical to the US Version, however, they used a few zoom effect (i.e. towards the guy's fist) to make the scene more dramatic. Then Geere and Allison leave the building. You see a tracking shot through the restaurant which was not included in the US Version. Additionally, Geere does not mark articles in the newspaper. You only see him opening the paper.

There's another huge difference at this point. The last shots during the drive differ completely again, and some shots were put somewhere else, so that they come up earlier or later, but are then shorter/longer in return. The International Version shows the two of them stopping in front of a house after the dialogue, while the US version shows Gere and Allison at first driving in the countryside and then taking a look there. They talk about their case and go through the past of the victims. Only then does the US version also show them parking in front of the house and getting out of the car, but the shots differ from those of the IV.

The content of the two versions now also differs completely at this point:

International Version (11 min. 33.4 sec.):
Gere is shown longer at first. Allison is taking a look around in the house. After that, they are shown in the car again. They are talking about the techniques of criminals, and how to convict them.
Gere and Allison are in a fancy restaurant now and are talking about previous cases.
Shortly afterwards, Allison is shown reading some newspaper articles in her home. Some flash backs indicate what she is reading. Scene change to Gere. he is in the office working at a map, on which all the crime scenes of suspicious cases are marked.
Scene change again: the man who has been interrogated earlier is standing in front of a club. he is watching the people and seems a bit confused. He then walks to the other side of the street, but a masked man suddenly attacks him. The guy takes some severe hits and then hits the floor bloodily. The masked man runs away from the crime scene. He takes off his mask in the getaway car - it is Gere.
The next morning Gere is shown on a terrace, drinking; then he starts to cry. We repeatedly see some flash backs to the woman who has already been shown in the previous flash backs.
Later that day Gere is going for some breakfast in a café. There's a newspaper with the woman from the flash backs on the title page lying at his usual spot. He goes to Allison and shows her the article. She reads it, with a lot of flash backs shown in-between.
Allison and Gere drive to a new crime scene. After they've arrived there Gere is talking to a policewoman about the last known sexual offenses within a radius of two miles. Allison sees a woman at the crime scene while the other two are still talking. The woman looks quite carried away and is crying. Gere comes back to Allison and also notices the strange woman.
Scene change to the office. The guy who was attacked last night is sitting there and wants to file a complaint. Allison is asked by her boss for a private conversation in his office.

US (19 min. 53.5 sec.):
Gere and Allison are driving to a motel. While Allison is reading a book that Gere gave her, he is cleaning his clothes (one shot of that was already shown at the beginning of the International Version).
The guy who got interrogated is now shown in front of the club. The events are identical to those in the International Version, except for the different/new shots. Moreover, there are less visual effects in the US version. And the guy lying bloodily on the floor is not shown in the US version (change due to reasons of censorship?). Now we see here that it is Gere behind the mask, too.
Gere and Allison are leaving the motel the next morning. The conversation in the car is also contained in the International Version, but the shots differ again there.

Now to something interesting: all of the scenes which were shown as flash backs in the International Version are now shown without any effects and in normal playback speed in the US version.
Allison and Gere enter a house full of junkies. One of them begins molesting Allison, but Gere intervenes pretty soon.
Allison is shown in the car again. she is still a bit confused because of what just happened, and rubs her hand constantly.
Both of them are entering the motel again. They have a drink and talk about their day. Gere goes to bed and Allison keeps reading his book.
Scene change. Gere is driving around on his own listening to some reports about the local crimes on the radio.
Allison is sitting in the motel all by herself and is watching the same reports on the TV.
They are driving to a crime scene the next morning. While Gere is talking to the policewoman, like in the International Version, Allison spots a grave. The strange woman is not shown in the US version.
Now follows the scene in which Gere finds the prepared newspaper in the café, which he then shows to Allison. The shots differ again to those in the International Version.
After that they are shown walking at the outskirts of the town and questioning some people on the current case.
A bound girl is shown now. This scene often came up as flash back in the International Version, but in the US version it is shown without any visual effects and in normal playback speed.
Now we're in the office in the US version, too. The guy who was attacked is not shown here. The boss then asks Allison to come to his office.

At first, the dialog is identical, while the shots are slightly different (not illustrated below).
After that, the US Version shows Gere and Alisson driving to the office, while the International Version shows her driving to the rundown house which was already shown to the US Version.
A little later, the US Version also shows them re-entering this house.
All scenes during their investigation in the house are different in both versions. Scenes of the woman which in the International Version were already shown in fast-paced flashbacks can now be seen in realtime in the US Version.
During their walk through the house you again and again see a photoshooting with a naked woman. This can also be seen in the US Version, however, the International Version often shows it longer and sometimes in a closer shot.
Allison goes through a few hallways with pictures and magazines all by herself when suddenly somebody runs away.
The International Version instead shows the photographer suddenly threatening the woman with a knife. Allison suddenly hears screams and runs off.
The International Version again shows more visual effects.

The escape is different in both versions. A lot of scenes were switchted and only the International Version shows a dog jumping on the runaway car (not illustrated below).
The US Version immediately shows Gere going back inside the house and getting the film out of the camera. That's about it.
The International Version instead shows Gere going back to Allison. Then we see the hairdresser from the beginning of the flick. She gets kidnapped and raped. The interesting thing about this is that the rapist is not the same guy who kidnapoed her. It is the guy who beat Gere up.
This was probably cut out of the US Version due to reasons of censorship.
