Digimon Xros Wars

1.01 Taiki, Isekai e Yuku!

Comparison:

  • US Version
  • Japanese Version
Release: Aug 09, 2015 - Author: Once - Translator: Tony Montana - external link: IMDB - more from this series

Compared are the censored US Version and the uncensored Japanese Version.

Created by Saban Brands, the censored version has been marketed out of Asia. Dialogs and images have altered, pieces of music have been replaced, cuts have been made. All in all, the censored US Version differs a lot of from the uncensored Japanese Version. Furthermore, there is no continuity to the previous seasons.

Fun fact:

In Italy, the uncensored Japanese Version of Xros Wars aired as Digimon Fusion Battles in 2013.

The Characters:

As knows from the previous seasons, the characters have Western names again.

General overview of the most important protagonists:

Taiki Kudou - Mikey Kudo

Akari Hinomoto - Angie Hinomoto

Zenjiro Tsurugi - Jeremy Tsurgi

Kiriha Aonuma - Christopher Aonuma

Nene Amano - Nene Amano

Yuu Amano - Ewan Amano

The Music:

The entire soundtrack has been replaced. The partially moving pieces of music from the Japanese Version, regardless of whether vocal and instrumental, are missing in the censored US Version. Eve the Japanese title song "Never Give Up!" by Sonar Pocket has been replaced by some English track. It is not as bad as "Digi Rap", it is far from it actually, but it is also far from from the original "Never Give Up!" I am afraid. The insert songs audible during the digitations (resp. DigiXros) are missing as well.

Censorship and Alterations:

Since all episodes have not been compared yet, it is rather difficult to summarize at this point. But it is safe to say that serious menacing themes and scenes have been weakened and belittled, to revealing scenes have been altered and/or removed. And of course, almost any single Japanese character is missing.

Some of the dialogs have been altered as well. This concerns both defusing particular situations and plot related aspects.

Moreover, there are scenes that contain dialog whereas there is not any in the Japanese Version. On the other hand, there are scenes in the Japanese Version without any dialog while there is dialog in the US Version. Furthermore, particular words have been changed, e.g. the term "DigiXros" has become "DigiFusion" or short "DigiFuse" in the US Version.

Please note:

Some of the alterations (such as the floating rocks) might as well be an alteration made for the DVD release. It is unknown whether they were made by the Japanese or during the editing process in the US. This is why these alterations are about to be mentioned in the following comparison.

About the comparison:

Mentioning any single alteration regarding the dialog would break the mold. For this reason, only the most important differences will be mentioned in the following comparison. Basically, those are altered dialogs with a censorship background or plot altering dialogs. The latter however is rather hard to determine, due to the many many differences between the US and the Japanese Version.

The actual comparison only illustrates the visual alterations. Differences in dialog will be explained at the end of the comparison.

Even though every single altered image and translated text is being mentioned, these things will probably passed on and only summarized at the end in the following comparisons.

In the Japanese TV Version, there were some ads every now and then. They are not going to be mentioned. While there are screenshots for the Eye Catcher in the first comparisons, it will only be mentioned in future comparisons. The same goes for the opening and ending for which this first comparison can be considered an example with screenshots.

As for the names, both the Japanese and the US name will be stated when mentioned for the very first time. When the name pops up again, there will only be the Japanese name.

For the record: the comparisons have been made with the German Version incl. German audio. But since the versions identical, the comparisons are named "US Version".

If not stated otherwise, the time index refers to the Japanese Version. When there is something new in the US Version (e.g. the names of the attacks), the time index of the US Version is mentioned as well.

Opening:

While the opening of the Japanese Version is only accompanied by some music, one gets to hear Taiki (Mikey) speaking an introduction in the US Version. The very suitable background music from the Japanese Version has been removed. As a result, the scenes appear to be entirely different. Furthermore, scenes have been altered, replaced and cut or retouched. This is very easy to spot, especially when it comes to weapons because those are glowing in the US Version.

The opening of the Japanese Version has a length of 119.04 seconds, the opening in the US Version has a length of only 111.92 seconds.

A word about the screenshots:
Only actual alterations and cuts are being illustrated. No screenshots means no difference. Since the US Version runs a bit slower at the beginning, the total difference is a bit less.

Before the intro, there are first inserts in the Japanese Version (among others regarding Asahi). No screenshots have been taken for those because they are simply irrelevant.

The Intro:

As already described, the title song has been replaced. But the lyrics have not simply been translated into English. Instead, there is an entirely new intro that differs a lot from the original Japanese intro plus it is much shorter.

The intro of the Japanese has a length of 81.17 seconds, the intro of the US Version has a length of only 49.01 seconds.
