The animated TV series Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles about 4 mutated turtles quickly became popular all over the USA back in 1987. Because of the huge success, British companies decided to buy the publication rights for the UK. However, since the laws for the protection of children and youth were way more strict than in the USA, most of the episodes had to be censored. They even altered the title - the word Ninja was replaced by the word Hero. Several episodes either re-dubbed or cut out any dialogue that included the word ninja. Also, Michelangelo's nunchucks were very often an issue of censorship and sometimes they even censored the use of other weapons as well.
For this comparison, the shortened German Version (which is based on the UK cut of the episodes) was compared to the uncensored Original Version. Both of these Versions were included in the DVD box-set released by KSM. However, the German Version runs a little faster than the original Version (due to the problem of PAL-speedup), therefore it is a little harder to compare the exact differences in time. Therefore, it is very much possible that the time designations are not one-hundred percent accurate.
In this episode there are 6 cuts with a total runtime of 25.8 seconds. 1 scene in this episode was repeated twice in the censored version (the scene has a runtime of 3.32 seconds).
For the UK Version of the series, the intro was lavishly re-cut. If you want to have a look at a more detailed report about the intro, have a look at the report for the very first episode of the first season of "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" on our website. Also, you should have a look at the report about episode 3 which has a more detailed description about the 2 changes that were made for the German DVD's version of the intro.
Comparison of the Versions
Michelangelo has a good time at an "Aunt Sally" on the fairground. After a close-up shot of his eyes, the UK Version misses out on a scene. In his one hand, he holds one of his nunchucks while in the other hand he has three balls. He throws them all into the air and uses his nunchuck to hit them towards the target. Thanks to this technique, he's able to win a huge amout of teddy bears. The UK Version continues when the balls hit their targets.
After Raphael playfully suggested to beat the 2 boys up to steal the wanted splinter from them, the UK Version misses out on Michaelangelo producing his nunchuck.
Michelangelo: "I'll take the little one. Oh, wait a minute. They are both little".
Instead, teh German Version repeats a short scene where you see the two boys; Donatello says something. However, this time his dialogue is different. The repeated scene is a little longer than the scene of Michaelangelo producing his nunchuck.
When the mutated vine moves towards the Turtles, they produce their weapons. Subsequently, there's a close-up shot of Michaelangelo who says something.
After the Turtles got out to fight the mutated plant, there's a missing shot of them producing their weapons.
Michelangelo (wearing his disguise) pulls out his nunchuck and hits the plant.
A short sentence was cut out since it includes the word ninja.
Leonardo: "Ninja-Power, yeah!"
