Compared are the Israeli VHS by Malibu Video and the UK-DVD by Arrow Video.
The cery rare Israeli tape contains several scenes with, compared to many other releases, different footage. Whether this version has also been released in other countries couldn't be determined. No clues that point into that direction could be found.
Book texts and letters, written in Italian in the familiar versions, have been replaced by English texts on the Israeli VHS. Among other scenes, the scene with Maria discovering the killer's archive in the basement contains alternate footage.
Furthermore, the VHS lacks scene parts, probable due to jumpcuts and wear and tear.
The few scenes missing in the familiar version (there's a seperate comparison for that) are all there on the VHS Version (except for framecuts at the end of the scene with Jane).
Cuts below 5 frames haven't been considered in this comparison.
8 scenes with alternate footage without difference
1 scene with alternate footage with a difference (1 sec)
5 cuts (18.8 sec)
1 extended black screen on the VHS before the end credits start (+ 4.96 sec)
Total length difference = 14.84 sec
Timeindex: Israeli VHS / UK-DVD (Arrow Video)
The UK-DVD contains a one second black screen at the beginning. The VHS begins after 1.5 seconds of the movie.
The time measurement of the VHS begins with the actual movie. Previous logos haven't been considered. Not being in the calculation of the cuts.
The opening of the book is different. The person's hands move differently. Moreover, the text on the VHS is written in English, the text on the DVD is in Italian.
(In both versions, the following close-up of the book page is in English.)
Same with the credits. The position of the hand and the language varies.
The flash of the whereabouts is different. It's in English on the VHS and in Italian on the DVD. The shot of the driving cars is longer on the DVD.
Furthermore, the subsequent shot of the shoplifter looking at the dresses plus the beginning of the following scene have been removed.
(Due to the wear and tear before the actual cut on the VHS, a jumpcut is being assumed here.)
15 frames have gotten lost due to a transition.
The letter to Peter Neal, that contains a passage from his book "Tenebrae", are written in different languages, depending on the version. This shot is 1 second longer on the DVD.
The shot of Anne in the car repair shop ends right in the middle of it. She walks to her car and gets in. The VHS is back on the horse when she starts her vehicle.
The killer takes a file out of the card box. The book "Tenebrae" is on the left side. The file is written in English. The killer looks at the first picture. Then he flips to the second picture. He pets the picture of the prostitute with his hand, twice.
On the DVD, the book is on the right side. The file is written in Italian. The killer looks at the first picture for an extended period. He flips to the second one and takes a short look.
no considerable difference
When Maria finds the notes and pictures in the killer's basement, there's alternate footage again. The newspaper article is written in different languages of course and the pictures and files on the table arranged differently. (As visible on the screenshot, the image "wanders" to the top in that scene.)
The following shot varies as well.
Maria keeps a hold of the newspaper article and reaches for a picture. It shows the first victim, the shoplifter. She reaches for the next picture which shows one of the two lesbian victims.
Here, the order of the pictures is the other way around. Maria takes the first one and it shows one of the lesbians. Then she takes the one of the shoplifter.
When Maria reaches for the newpaper articles in the bowl, they show different things as well.
A further scene with alternate footage.
Maria takes one of the files and removes little scissors from one of the pictures. Subsequently, a tracking shot of a map.
Maria takes some files and a pictures for a moment, then she puts everything back. She touches the pictures and sheets, picks up a picture and puts it back again.
The VHS lacks the last 4 frames of Maria's death. The beginning of the following has also been removed.
The last 7 frames of Jane unwrapping her new shoes are missing on the VHS.
The UK-DVD ends slightly earlier, then the end credits follow. On the VHS, the black screen before the end credits is longer.
