original title: Jing wu men xu ji

Comparison:

  • BBFC 18
  • Uncut
Release: Jun 20, 2017 - Author: Muck47 - Translator: Tony Montana - external link: IMDB
Compared are the cut UK DVD by Imperial Entertainment UK and the uncut German DVD by Schröder Media

- 5 cuts
- Length difference: 77 sec (= 1:17 min)

Minor jump cuts with a length of less than 0.5 sec each have not been considered in the following comparison.

Contentwise, Fist of Fury II (1977) is a direct sequel and not just some made-up crap. Bruce Li plays the brother of Bruce Lee's character from the original Fist of Fury and he has come to avenge the death of his brother. That is all one needs to know because this movie is basically nonstop from start to finish.

With Lo Lieh and several other familiar faces of 70s Kong Kong cinema, the result is of higher quality than many other Bruceploitation flicks starring Bruce Li.

Unfortunately, Fist of Fury II is one of many martial arts flicks from back then that could not be really enjoyed because all the uncut tapes from several countries have something in common: A crappy aspect ratio (originally in 2.35:1, the tapes are zoomed in to full screen). On 07/14/2016, a German DVD based on a Spanish movie role was released. Said DVD is almost uncut resp. some footage gets lost due to reel changes but that footage has been added from the German tape. All in all, the best release of this rare genre film worldwide.

As for the UK DVD which is still one of the very few digital releases worldwide: The DVD is total crap on so many levels. Based on a VHS, the aspect ratio is wrong (zoomed in to full screen) and in order to get the BBFC rating, cuts were required as well. The UK DVD lacks the bird being fed to the panther because violence against animals has always been an issue in the UK. And I guess it is no surprise that some nunchucks action and a double ear clap in the second half of the movie are missing as well.

Different title - approx. 1 minute later.

01:47 / 01:38-01:43

Probably a jump cut on the UK DVD: The coffin is being carried a little earlier.

5.2 sec

15:46 / 15:40-15:51

Miyamoto grabs a bird from the cage and feeds it to the panther who does not waste any time.

11 sec

18:49-18:51 / 18:52

Jump cut on the German DVD: Slightly longer distance shot of Tin Man Kwai.

Please note:
Apparently, here was a reel change because the Spanish movie lacks a little more before and after.

+ 1.8 sec

18:56-18:59 / 18:57

Same here: The Japanese dude claps a little longer plus the wooden table is being carried inside from further in the background.

+ 3.3 sec

59:00-59:02 / 58:50

People are saying bye-bye to Tschang a little longer.

+ 1.8 sec

59:06-59:08 / 58:04

The Inspector and the train longer.

+ 2.2 sec

74:58 / 74:42-74:51

After getting the nunchucks from inside, the student takes a stab at it but he does not even get the chance to use them against the Japanese dude.

9.4 sec

75:26 / 75:18-76:08

Tschang illustrates his nunchucks skills. He is surrounded by two Japanese guys doing their thing. Tschang then attacks. Of course, the two Japanese dudes get their butts kicked. Confident in his victory, he throws the nunchucks away resp. on top of a board made out of wood.

49.7 sec

76:37 / 77:19-77:21

Tschang ear claps the Japanese - a common BBFC issue.

1.7 sec

Last but not least, a little screenshot comparison: Original aspect ratio 2.35:1 vs zoomed in to full screen - business as usual I am afraid.
