The censored US-DVD by Artisan Home Entertainmenr (rated R) has been compared to the German DVD by Madison Home Video (Unrated Version).
Runtime of the censored US-DVD: 1:35:16
Runtime of the uncensored German DVD: 1:35:30
The US-DVD is censored compared to the German one in several scenes. Oftenly, "hard" scenes were alleviated by using alternatove (more harmless footage). In single cases, some things were simply cut out. The soundtrack was possibly also censored, but the German DVD contains no English dubbing, so this could not be checked.
The timecodes in the report always relate to the US-DVD. The time designations of the cut scenes themselves merely represent the time difference to the German DVD. The scene with the biology teacher of course misses much more of the original footage than only one second, but due to the alternative footage of the US-DVD the scene is finally just one second shorter.
The US-version merely contains the first two bloody frames as the janitor's pacemaker shoots out of his chest. The rest of the shot and another close-up of the janitor falling to the side were replaced by a close-up of Mary Lou in the US-version.
After the principal has cut off his finger, you see the blood squirting out in the German version. In another shot, you see the cut-off finger dropping on the ground- The US-version shows the horrifiedly looking principal instead.
The German versoin shows Alex' flag sliding down as he gets up. He bows down and pulls up the flag again. Another shot of Alex being startled by the announcement by speaker and bowing down again to pick up his cloths, was removed as well, possibly for continuity purposes. The US-version features the announcement before the actual cut.
Different footage was used in the two versions.
In the German version, Mary Lou makes a blank in the middle of her line - she rams the ice cream cones down, whereas blood squirs into the biology teacher's face. Only then, she finishes her line. The camera moves back to the teacher's bloody face and then pans down to the pierced hands. After it panned back up, a cut to Mary Lou takes place, who then turns on the blender and slowly moves it towards the teacher. Then you see his bloody face again, followed by a close-up of the blender. Subsequently you see Mary Lou with the blender again. The scene ends with a shot of the biology teacher's back of the head, blood flows out.
In the US-version, Mary Lou says her line without blank and only then rams the ice cream cones down (alternative shot). A longer shot of the screaming teacher is shown, but without a single squirt of blood in his face. The camera pans to his pierced hands (different shot than the German version). Cut to the biology teacher's face. Now, Mary Lou turns on the blender and moves it towards the biology teacher. The insert to the bloody face is missing and the close-up of the blender is shown immediately. The final two shots of the German version are missing completely.
Different footage was used for the sex scene of Mary Lou and Alex in the US-version. In the German version, the camera pans up the table so you can see Mary Lou's breasts. The US-version shows both of them from above.
Again, different footage was used. After Mary Lou has moaningly thrown herself upwards, the German version shows a shot in which her breasts can be seen. The US-version on the other hand shows Alex moving his hand across Mary Lou's thigh.
Hard to tell if there was something censored here. The German version shows the computer monitor with Alex' grades slightly longer. The following shot of Miss Richards also seems to be a different one. The soundtrack was probably censored here, because Miss Richards uses the word "fricking" instead of "fucking" in the US-DVD. The German DVD (as mentioned in the opening text) unfortunately does not contain any English soundtracks to compare.
German text (translated): "This fucking little bastard! There's something fishy about this!"
English text: "That fricking little jerk broke into the system!"
during the subsequent phone call of Miss Richards, there was definetly different footage used. It seems that, among other things, the word "shit" from the German version was censored because miss Richards says "Damn!" at the end.
Both images are there to illustrate that there was different footage used at all.
Mary Lou rips out Shane's heart, but the US-DVD only contains the final three bloody frames of the shot during which the heart is coming out of the back of the couch. The rest of the shot and another close-up shot of the heart were replaced by an alternative view of Shane screaming.
The German version shows a tracking shot to dead Shane as Alex enters the house. The US-version shows an alternative close-up.
Another tracking shot was replaced with an alternative close-up view as a policeman takes photographs of dead Shane.
The alternative shot is about a second shorter.
After Sarah found her dead companion, Mary Lou appears standing in a doorway.
In the German version, she says (translated) "You dumb bitch! I'm the other woman!"
In the US-version she merely says "I'm the other woman!"
The US-DVD does not contain Sarah cursing before putting away the defective flame thrower.
The GERMAN DVD misses (probably a problem with the source) Alex opening the closure above the coin slot before trying to put in a coin.
Now, the soundtrack was probably changed in the US-version. When the coin doesn't fit, only the German DVD features Alex saying (translated) "Crap!".
On the US-DVD, he doesn't say anything, though. The word was probably removed from the soundtrack.
The denoted cut-time relates to the source error of the GERMAN DVD.
- 0.5 sec
The US-version only features the first few frames of Sarah, who is sitting in the car, being impaled by Mary Lou. The rest of the shot was replaced with an alternative view of Sarah's face, contorted with pain.
