Comparison between the shortened Italian/French Version and the uncut version.

Anyone who ever saw a Tony Jaa movie should expect nothing else but an action-packed flick where the story itself rather plays a minor part of the movie - the same goes for "The Protector". However, the movie received mixed feelings when the studios announced that the European version will be 20 minutes shorter and that all of these cuts were made to trim down the plot. on the one hand, fans were happy to have all the action sequences, on the other hand most of the fans argued that - due to the cuts - the movie doesn't make too much sense anymore. However, both is only half true.
Let's put it this way: They could have taken out even more of the scenes that still made it in the movie (e.g. some of the news segments) and the synchronization is - as usual for many Asian movies - a catastrophy. All things considered, the plot of the uncut version is not really more sophisticated. It still includes issues that stay unresolved (e.g. the sudden disappearance of the capoeira fighter) and some storylines are just brought up and then not developed any further. Therefore, an interested viewer should not expect too much (regarding the plot) - therefore it is more interesting to have a look at cuts due to censorship. It's hard to decide which of the cuts were made due to censorship and wich ones were just cut out along with the respective part of the plot. However, some of the cuts still tone down the violence (some of these scenes include violence against women or animals or shorter fighting sequences). Therefore, as a matter of fact, the European versions do not only miss out on plot sequences, they also include several cuts that were made to censor the violence. Cu due to censorship (resp. those that look like that) are marked red, re-cuts and alternative scenes (the French/Italian version actually offers 3 scenes of additional footage - 4 if you count the different logos) are written italic.

And just if you're wondering - YES! There acutally are 324 cuts! However, these cuts also include several short cutbacks where they only cut out a few frames at the beginning or the end of a scene. If The Protector was an older movie that lost several frames over the years because of the bad source material one would proabably not even talk about it. However, since we talk about a relatively recent movie, we have to assume that the studios tried to cut away as much of the movie as possible to trim the movie's run time down. There are several parts of the movie where the cuts actually do disturb the flow of the movie but most of the time you won't even recognize it. Since we want to present you a complete report for that movie, we did include all these short cutbacks. Since the average readers will probably not be too interested in these short alterations, they are written in a small font to make the report a little more lucid. The report won't mention auditory censorship, but generally you can say that bone fractures sound way more harmless in the French and Italian version (even though you have to admit that the uncut version used very overdone soundeffects [which - surprisingly enough - were also censored for the Thai soundtrack on the French/Italian DVD]).

The version that was used for this report is the German DVD released by e-m-s. Apart from the beginning logos it is identical to the French and probably also the Italian version of the movie (which has the same run time). Several internet sources also name a Spanish TV version that is supposed to be identical to those versions as well. However, not every European country received a shortened version. Just as for Ong-Bak, they in the UK only released the uncut version of the movie.
Surprisingly enough, the USA offers the shortest version of them all with an NTSC runtime of 81 minutes. This version offers different cuts that most of the time were made at different parts of the movie. Then again, the Special Edition release offered a second disc that included the original uncut version.
The HK-VCD is also censored at several at several points of the movie.

The time designations always refer to the French/Italian version.
All the information about the runtime of the cuts are in PAL speed.

Part 1: 00:00 - 40:14
In the first half of the movie, most of the cuts just remove parts of the plot. Most of the censorship cuts can be found during the end of the movie (and therefore in the second part of this report).

Jump to the second part of the comparison: Part 2
00:00-00:19
The German DVD version contains two additional company logos (e-m-s and 3L Filmverleih).

1,8 sec

05:50
After the first shot of the dying elephant mother, a short part of Tony Jaa and the other vollagers praying is missing. At first , the two elephants can be seen longer, then there is a black screen of approx. one second followed by a tracking shot of the monks. Eventually a longshot of the monks and the villagers can be seen before another shot of Tony Jaa.
31,1 sec

05:55
Here, the Euro Version was recut and directly shows Tony exercising in the forest. The part writtin in italics was, however, inserted shortly after (see 06:34). The uncut version shows the elephant longer and after the black screen the following: the elephant can be seen walking through mist in sow motion, then a picture that obviously shows Tony's dad, then another picture showing the elephant. Tony can be heard talking from the off:
"If, one day, Dad has the chance to offer Por Yai to the King it would be the greatest thing ever to happen to me."
A shot of Tony, his dad and the elephant dad can be seen, again we hear Tony's voice:
"At least it won’t be a waste, to be born into a Jatubaht warrior family."

Now, there is a fade out and the following scene of Tony exercising in the forest (with which the Euro version starts again) is a tiny bit longer in the Uncut.
32 sec

06:34-06:51
The Euro Version shows the pictures and Tony, his dad and the elephant here.
+ 17,3 sec => 14,7 sec difference (32sec-17,3sec)

06:52
After the black screen, the French version shows the scene of a tracking shot along the rock before showing Tony kneeling in front of the elephant. In the Uncut, Tony is riding on an elephant along the street and deliver goods to his father. Then, we see a dialog of two women which explains who Tony and his father meet a minute later.
"This year Songkran [Thai New Year] should be fun." - "Mr. Sutem is hosting everything."
"Hosting a huge party!" - "Well his son just won a position in the senate recently."
A poster showing Mr. Sutem's son can be seen.
"It’s actually good, returning favors to the villagers."
Tony jumps off the elephant and one of the women talks to his father:
"Koi! Hey, there is going to be a elephant checkup. Why don’t you take your elephant there? Maybe you'll get good luck!"
He strokes the elephant.
31,2 sec

08:43
We now come to a series of rather unimportant cuts during scene changes which do not consist of more than a few frames.
The elephant is being splashed with water 6 frames longer.
0,24 sec

08:45
The elephant puts his trunk into the water bucket 12 frames longer.
0,5 sec

08:49
Another 12 frames of the trunk are missing.

1,2 sec

10:34
The man is writhing on the ground longer.
0,8 sec

10:48
A shot of the elephant was shortened.
0,7 sec

10:54
Now it's getting complicated: A longer part of the original is being cut in the European version but was inserted to a large extent 18 seconds later.
Scenes of the New Year's festival can be seen, several happy people are splashing each other with water. In between we can see some aerial shots. Now we can see the elephant chasing his captured children in several shots. Then, a riksha driver is blocking the robber's way, they shout at him first and run to the cage afterwards.
33,8 sec

11:12-11:39
The passage that was previously cut out was addeded to the movie now. After Tony angrily runs towards the camera you in the original version see the scene of the elephant thieves running away. Additionally, the individual transitions of the scenes - as usual - miss out on the beginning and end frames. Therefore, the French/Italian version is about 7 seconds shorter.
+ 27.2 sec => 6.6 sec difference (33.8sec-27.2sec)

11:39-11:55
Again, there's a re-cut: in the French/Italian version, parts of the pursuit are shown earlier. They probably did this because in the original version the elephant thieves are already a few steps away from the cage while in the German version (because of the different order of the scenes) they at first stand right in front of the cage.
No difference in time.

11:55-11:56
Now you see the beginning of the pursuit; it's a short scene where the thieves turn around and then run away.
No difference in time.

11:56
Still, they cut out a short sequence (which in the uncut version follows right after the scene where the thieves turn around). You see an aerial shot of the thieves running through the crowd of people.
2 sec

12:25
Again, a shortened scene transition.
1.1 sec

12:29
Ditto. The kids can be seen a little earlier.
1 sec

12:35
Again, some irrelevant frames were cut out.
1.1 sec

12:41
The French/Italian version fades out earlier.
2.5 sec

12:49
The flute is shown a little longer, followed by a shot of 4 women who apparently perform a ritual dance. Additionally, the following sequence was slowed down for the French/Italian version.
5.2 sec

12:57
The old woman is shown longer and the first beat of the drum is missing in the following scene.
2.5 sec

12:59
The two drummers are shown longer and the following aerial shot of the woman was cut out. The 4 women are shown again, followed by another shot of the old woman from above.
9.4 sec

13:05
Tony walks through the woods and approaches the people. The singing men are shown again, followed by a shot of the women.
10.8 sec

13:16
The man is shown minimally longer, followed by additional shots of the old woman and the dancing women.
2.6 sec

13:24
Shots of a drummer, the old woman, and an additional musician were cut out.
2.4 sec

13:28
Tony and his father are shown earlier.
1.2 sec

13:33
The old woman is shown again - this time from a different angle.
2.3 sec

13:38
After the black screen you in the French/Italian version immediately see the trumpeter while in the uncut version you at first see an exterior shot.
2.4 sec

13:45
The trumpeter plays a little longer and you already get to see some of the party guests (moments later follow similar shots). The woman (resp. her breasts) can be seen earlier.
9.8 sec

14:01
An exterior shot of the house.
4.6 sec

14:06
Two other guys anxiously get up after Tony threw one of the bag guys through the door. Someone places his glass on the table.
0.7 sec

14:09
An additional shot of the bad guy from the previous scene ying on the floor.
0.6 sec

14:14
Another abbreviation of a scene transition: Tony goes towards the camera and the man with the glasses on his back raises his head.
1.4 sec

14:15
Ditto; the man is shown longer.
1.2 sec

14:35

17:53
This time, a longer scene was cut out. It is a news segment which is commented from off-screen by an announcer. The news report tells us that the police in fact did already assemble in order to be able to monitor the delivery of the elephant from Thailand to Australia. However, the elephant had already been stolen. At the same time they apparently found Mr. Wittaya Thammarat (the owner of the famous Thai restaurant "Tom Yum Goong" in Sydney) dead. The reporter says that Mr Thammarat was also involved in several deals with the Chinese mafia and other illegal affairs (which are not explained any further). By now, there neither is an official statement regarding the missing elephant nor is there any additional information. She says that you can't be sure if the disappearance of the elephant is connected to the murder of the restaurant owner. Then they show protesting animal welfarists and one of them says that the elephant can only develop in its natural environment where it's able to live with other elephants. Therefore, they shouldn't bring the elephant to Australia, it's supposed to stay in Thailand. Then they interview a spokesman of the Thai consular office who expresses regrets over the incident. He stresses t hat Thailand has strict laws regarding the protection of elephants and that they only planned to give it away because they were thinking about the public benefit. Unfortunately they didn't know beforehand that some deceptive buisness practice was behind it.
77.4 sec

17:57
Shorter scene transition.
2.2 sec

18:04
After Mark (the police officer) said "Vietnamese..." (in the uncut he's shown in a close-up shot, while in the French/Italian version he already says that beforehand), you in the French/Italian version don't hear him adding "Wowowow, and Laos!" (The point is that he lists all the different Asian residents in a specific part of Sydney.)
3.6 sec

18:23
A pretty bad cut in the French/Italian version: the camera team shoots Mark looking at the fruits (which he also comments on). Cut. Then they shoot inside. In the uncut version the scene goes on a little longer. The woman offers him some mangos and since there's a camera crew around she offerst them for free. At first, Mark is a little surprised but then he starts to take advantage of the situation and takes some more mangos.
Here's the dialogue:
"How much are they?" - "You want some mangoes? Don't worry about it, here take them!"
"How much?" - "Donīt worry!"
"Oh, you sure that's okay?" - "Of course, donīt worry!"
"Since you insist, I’ll take another two. Thank you very much" - "You're welcome."
Then he joyfully turns to the camera crew and says:
"This is just the way we do things here. Asians in a foreign place need to stick together."
24.5 sec

18:33
After the hairdresser cut the wire for the earplugs, the camera pans to Mark's face. He acts as if he would continue phoning and gives a little kiss to the phone. He says "Take it easy baby, I get stressed. OK?" Even though he does say that in the French/Italian version, the little kiss is not shown.
2.4 sec

18:52
The police officer goes away - in the French/Italian version he leaves immediately after he arrived. In the uncut version he stays in the shop a little longer. He feels flattered when they take notice of him but as soon as he wants to say something, Mark adresses him with not so warm words in English. The police officer reacts with a pretty dumb glimpse and rolling his eyes. In between there are 2 shots of Mark (unfortunately I couldn't understand anything, Petchtai Wongkamlao's (Mark) accent is very harsh and there were no English subtitles for that scene).
13.2 sec

18:59
He runs out the door a little longer.
1.7

19:01
A short missing shot of the owners of the shop who are being robbed.

1.6 sec

21:01-21:09
Alternative material in the French/Italian version: there are two additional shots of Mark and his disappointed colleague. Mark tells him to hit the road and comments it with a gesticulation.
+ 8.2 sec

21:09
In return, the uncut version at this point show different shots of the two of them, followed by a scene that was completely cut out of the French/Italian version. The partner does seem to be disappointed, too, however, this is shown with an alternative take. Again, Mark tells him to hit the road ("Letīs go!") but instead of the gesticulation he takes the broken ear plugs out of his ears. (overall 6.9 sec)
Subsequently follows a scene where we are introduced to Pla (the prostitute) for the first time. The scene obviously takes place in a casino (you see a neon sign). Pla wheezily washes her bloodbesmeared mouth over a sink. A man accomanied by another guy enters the room and shouts at her ("Why arenīt you working?"). Then he asks her where she's been. In a very broken English he talks about a specific guy and asks her if she wants to die. She answers taht she couldn't pay. The man gets his shirt out and he says that there are only 2 jobs women could do ("You can be a waitress or you can be a callgirl! What can you do, huh?"). He wags a finger and says "You got two weeks, thatīs it!" Then, the two men leave the room. (45.9 sec)
Altogether: 52.8 sec

22:08
The boss shouts at Rose some more. In the original version he says "You canīt even take care of the taste of the food" while in the French/Italian version he already said that.
2.8 sec

22:18
Boss: "Ever since her dad has been alive, Cheun has taken care of this anyway"
5,4 sec

22:21
Boss: "Her actions are considered as not respectful to others. All the people that we will be talking to are representatives from the government." Two shots of him and one of Rose.
14,9 sec

22:55
Rose: "I think my fate is greater than that old man's fate."
7,2 sec

22:59
The airplane halts in another shot and we see more of the airport.
7,1 sec

22:59-23:01
Recut: the legs are seen later in the Uncut.
+ 1,9 sec

23:08
The man looks at Tony; shots of both.
6,3 sec

First, a sign in the airport hall is missing, then follows the shot of the legs shown earlier in the International version.
